Melissa sat in the driver's seat, hands gripping the steering wheel like it was the only thing keeping her from throttling David.

Her usually bright, pretty face was clouded over, looking like she was on the verge of launching into another lecture. She stared straight ahead, lips pressed into a thin line, not saying a word.

David glanced at her, sensing the danger level was still critically high. He cleared his throat nervously.

"Uh... My beautiful and kind teacher Melissa, I really did go to save Ralts! Honest! I mean, come on, would a good, upstanding student like me go to a place like... that?"

Melissa's eyes flicked over to him for about half a second, just long enough for him to feel the temperature in the car drop by ten degrees. She snorted, turning back to face the road without a word. If looks could freeze, David would've been a Vanilluxe right about now.

David couldn't help but find it a little funny. Seeing Melissa, usually so composed and in control, acting like this was kind of new. It was almost... Cute? He scratched his nose, trying not to smile too obviously. Despite his daily antics to annoy her, he couldn't help but acknowledge she was the one probably most close to him.

Not one to let awkward silences drag on, David picked up Pikachu from his shoulder and gave it a reassuring pat. "Look, Melissa, isn't it kind of a win? I mean, I ended up with not just one, but two Pokémon. That's like a buy-one-get-one-free deal! Look how cute they are."

Melissa's grip tightened on the steering wheel. David hurriedly added, "And hey, they're not just any Pokémon. I mean, look at this little guy!"

But she didn't look at him .

David sighed. "Alright, looks like I'm gonna need a little visual aid." He whispered to his coat. "Hey, Ralts, mind helping me out here? I need some cuteness here."

From inside his clothes, a tiny Ralts with light blue hair cautiously poked its head out, blinking with wide, curious eyes.

"Lalu~" it cooed softly. " Is that Mommy?"

David almost choked on nothing, thankfully Melissa didn't understand her words.

Melissa's eyes widened, her anger momentarily giving way to surprise. "Wait... Is that really a Shiny Ralts?"

David couldn't help but puff out his chest a little. "Yep! Pretty neat, huh?"

Melissa's initial shock gave way to something like cautious approval. As a Pokémon school teacher, she knew just how rare and valuable a Shiny Ralts was. The realization hit her hard—this wasn't just any starter Pokémon.

She thought back to why she gave David the 300,000 Alliance coins in the first place. She wanted him to get a decent starter Pokémon, something safe and reliable. It wasn't as fancy as the starter Pokémon some other kids had, the ones that cost millions, but it was supposed to be enough to give David a good start.

And now, just a single day later, David had somehow acquired not just one, but two Pokémon—both of them way more impressive than the typical Pidgey or Weedle most beginners started with. It didn't make sense. Then again, nothing David did ever made sense.

Melissa sighed, her grip on the wheel finally loosening. She shot David a sideways glance, trying to suppress a hint of a smile. "You're lucky, you know that? You always somehow manage to make a mess and come out on top."

David just grinned, gently petting the tiny Ralts. "That's my specialty."

Melissa shook her head, a reluctant smile tugging at her lips. "Just... promise me you won't do anything stupid like this again."

David gave her a thumbs-up. "No more brothel raids, scout's honor."

Melissa couldn't help but snort at that, finally relaxing as the car started moving. David leaned back, satisfied. It wasn't exactly a parade in his honor, but he'd take it. Besides, Melissa wasn't yelling anymore. He considered that a victory.

As Melissa drove, her eyes fixed on the road, her mind was racing. She couldn't help but think about David's two Pokémon. First, there was Pikachu—a species that was basically the Pokémon equivalent of a stray cat. Usually, you couldn't walk five steps in a park without tripping over one. But David's Pikachu was…different. It was sharp-eyed, energetic, and had that spark—literally and figuratively. Not the usual fat, lazy types you saw sneaking food off picnic tables.

Just from that Pikachu alone, Melissa had to admit, David's starting lineup wasn't half bad. In fact, it was easily on par with those pampered kids who walked around with Royal Starters like Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. The kind of rich-kid Pokémon that came with their own custom Poké Balls and probably a monogrammed blanket.

And now, on top of that, David had managed to snag a Shiny Ralts. Melissa still couldn't quite wrap her head around it. Ralts were rare enough as it was, only appearing in secret realms that most rookie trainers wouldn't dare step into without at least three backup plans and a signed will. And this one? Shiny. The kind of rare that veteran trainers would lose their minds over. Heck, she and Nakamura—an experienced teacher and a senior investigator—had just seen one for the first time today. And it was in David's hands. David, the same kid who once got lost in the school parking lot.

The absurdity of it nearly made her laugh, but she managed to hold it together, mostly by gripping the steering wheel like it had personally insulted her.

Most of the anger that had been simmering in her chest since she picked him up was slowly draining away, replaced by a mixture of disbelief and—if she was honest with herself—a bit of admiration. She still didn't fully understand how David had pulled it off, but she couldn't deny it was impressive. And risky. In fact, if the investigators hadn't shown up when they did, she wouldn't have been surprised if David's "heroic rescue mission" ended with him in a full-body cast.

Melissa glanced sideways at David, who was currently chatting with Ralts like they were old friends. She sighed, finally breaking the silence. "You do realize how rare that Ralts is, right? A Shiny Ralts isn't just a little special. We're talking serious potential. Even at its most basic, it's probably Gym-level, maybe even Elite."

David blinked, looking up from Ralts. "Elite? Like…elite-elite? Not just 'I'm good at beating up Rattatas' elite?"

Melissa chuckled. "Yeah, genius. Not just better than a Pidgey elite. I'm talking about the kind of power that makes you a target. People would pay a fortune for that thing, or worse, try to take it. Trainers would throw down in the streets if they saw you walking around with it."

David looked down at Ralts, who blinked back up at him with wide, innocent eyes. "Guess you're kinda popular, huh?" he said with a grin, scratching its head. Ralts chirped happily, snuggling back into his jacket like it hadn't a care in the world.

Melissa's expression softened for a moment before she regained her composure. "I'm just saying…be careful. You got lucky this time. Next time, I might not be there to bail you out of trouble."

David just grinned. "You saying you care, Melissa?"

She rolled her eyes. "Don't push it." But even as she said it, David caught the faintest hint of a smile tugging at her lips. For once, he decided to quit while he was ahead.

After hearing Melissa's words, David nodded earnestly. "Got it. I'll protect Ralts like it's my life's purpose...and maybe also because I don't want to get smacked by you again," he added with a cheeky grin.

Melissa just rolled her eyes. "You'd better. If I find out you dragged that poor thing into some ridiculous mess, you won't just be getting your ear pulled—you'll be getting your head rearranged."

David chuckled nervously and decided it was probably best to stay quiet for a bit. As Melissa continued driving, he mentally pulled up his system interface, and a familiar panel flashed before his eyes:

[Ralts (Psychic, Fairy)]

[Gender: ♀]

[Level: 4 (Infant Stage)]

[Ability: Synchronize (If Ralts gets burned, poisoned, or paralyzed, the attacker gets the same status condition. Sharing is caring, right?)]

[Nature: Modest (+Special Attack, -Attack)]

[Individual Values: HP (17), Attack (0), Special Attack (31), Defense (18), Special Defense (31), Speed (31)]

[Moves: Destiny Bond, Mean Look, Disable, Memento, Grudge, Teleport...]

[Held Item: None]

[Potential: Elite Level]

[Special Abilities:

1. Shiny Pokémon: Special Attack base stat +25 over normal Ralts. Sparkles not included.

2. Mutation: Terrifying Psychic (Incredible latent Psychic energy. Basically, it's packing way more brainpower than it knows what to do with, like a supercomputer trying to run on a potato battery.)

David's eyes practically sparkled. A true Shiny Pokémon! Not only did his Ralts have boosted Special Attack, but it also came with some kind of insane psychic potential. It was like he'd won the lottery and then got handed the keys to a mansion right after.

And the individual values? Perfect Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. He practically had a mini powerhouse sitting in his jacket, occasionally poking its head out to chirp, "Lalu~!" with the innocence of a newborn.

Of course, the Attack stat was a big, fat zero, but David couldn't care less. His Ralts was female anyway, so the whole Gallade evolution path was out of the question. No swordsman, but definitely a psychic powerhouse in the making.

David grinned like he'd just discovered a stack of rare candies under his bed. He might not have a Royal Starter, but he had this. And honestly, with Ralts' potential, it was probably stronger than any fancy Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur those rich kids liked to show off. He almost wished one of them would say something, just so he could casually flex.

And then there were the moves. Destiny Bond? Mean Look? Memento? David blinked at the list. Ralts isn't even supposed to know these at this level! Those were all Egg Moves—moves passed down through breeding. Ralts must've had some pretty talented parents, or at the very least, some very well-bred ones.

The list kept going. Not only did Ralts have Teleport, but it had learned it ridiculously early. Normally, a Ralts would be flopping around helplessly until level 15 before mastering it. His Ralts? Level 4 and already zipping around like it was nothing.

David's grin got wider. "Well, aren't you just a little cheat code," he whispered to the Ralts peeking out from his coat. Ralts giggled in response, nuzzling against his hand.

Melissa glanced sideways at him as he tried to contain his glee. "You look like you just found out Christmas came early," she said flatly.

"Christmas? Melissa, I found a Shiny Ralts. This is like...ten Christmases stacked on top of each other," David shot back, still grinning.

Melissa shook her head but couldn't help the tiny smile that tugged at her lips. "Just don't get too cocky. Shiny or not, that Ralts isn't invincible. And you sure aren't either," she reminded him, her voice softening a bit.

David nodded, still admiring Ralts' panel. "I know, I know. But still…kinda cool, right?"

Melissa's smile grew just a fraction. "Yeah...it's kinda cool."

David leaned back in the seat, his hands behind his head, grinning like he'd just won the lottery. Because in his eyes, he basically had.
