Chapter 4 - Escape

The next option was to borrow strength, he dearly wished to borrow mage level strength, but he didn't know any magic spells. Magic without spells was useless.

Wait. That was not true. He looked at the fireball option. After a brief moment of though he bought.

[Wealth: 50 Gold coins]

He settled for the two options; borrow knight level strength and surge.

He took a deep breath in; this was the moment of truth. He only had less than a minute, if he messed this up he was not likely to get another. It was now or never.

The moment he authorized the transaction, strength surged into his body.

On his panel his strength surged to 200, his other attributed marching following, then after activating surge, they doubled again. His strength rose to 400, his other attributed were all at least at 300.

He felt as strong as an ox and as light as a feather. However he didn't have time to pay attention to that.

He immediately flexed his hands and the cuffs snapped.

[Wealth: 47 Gold coins]

The sound immediately alerted the guards. They immediately turned to observe.

Before they could react he changed to borrow mage level strength. He didn't know how to cast fireball, but his body followed the motions, a cryptic chant flowed out of his mouth for 3 seconds before a massive fireball shot towards one guard.

[Wealth: 38 Gold coins]

The guard was caught by surprise, facing the fireball at close distance he only had time to draw his sword before the fireball impacted against him severely.

Facing a strength almost close to an elite mage's he couldn't muster any resistance. The fireball detonated violently and consumed him in an instant.

Lucien didn't stop at all to view the result.

The fireball took too long to chant, the other knight wouldn't give him enough time to complete it. He changed to borrow knight level strength.

The otherworldly strength filled him again, He rushed towards the guard ,conveniently the torturer's table was on the way. He picked up a long torture knife as he flashed next to the guard in an instant.

[Wealth: 32 Gold coins]

The guard had the presence of mind to raise his sword and block the strike, however, Lucien's attributes completely crushed his. The sword was pressed onto his body before he was sent flying.

The guard crashed into the wall with a thud, his body crumpling. Lucien didn't give him a chance to right himself. He sought to hit him while he was down. He flashed next to the guard again. His knife swinging down

[Wealth: 26 Gold coins]

The knife hit the guard's armor and broke. Lucien cursed. He reached out for the guards sword which had been flung aside. The guard took this chance to recover and throw an aura filled punch.

Lucien grunted in pain as he felt the hit impact his side. Thankfully, he now had high vitality, he ignored it and threw his own.

The punch once again overpowered the guard. Lucien didn't miss the chance this time, he drove the sword straight through the gap in the knight's armor.

Hot blood gushed out and the guard stilled in shock. His wide eyes stared at Lucien in shock and fear. He watched as life flowed out of the guard's desperate eyes.

Lucien had thought he would feel something, disgust or fear. But there was only indifference. The fear and disgust was locked away. He recognized this was his predecessor's influence.

He had been taught from a young age to kill decisively when the situation called for it. in fact much of what he had done was his predecessor part of him. Earth's Lucien wouldn't have been as decisive.

He terminated the transaction and looked at his balance.

[Wealth: 15 Gold coins]

He cautiously approached the other guard. He turned away in disgust seeing the mix of melted armor and charred human.

Seeing that he was safe, Lucien finally allowed the torrent of emotions to hit him. The relief, joy, disgust and fear overwhelmed him.

He turned around and vomited, or at least tried to. He only dry heaved, his body too tattered to give up precious bile.

He only allowed himself a moment before he forced himself up. He was still not safe; the torture was still out there, along with scores of his uncle's men.

He swallowed his disgust and rummaged around the guards pockets, he really needed money at the moment. He fished around and produced a pouch, only to be extremely disgruntled when he only found two shiny gold coins and a couple of silver. He felt the urge to give the guy a kick, "poor sod."

It was understable though, from his predecessor's memory he knew that one gold coin was worth 100 silver coins and one silver coin was worth 100 copper coins. A gold coin could comfortably feed a family of five for half a year.

Gold coins were extremely valuable.

He couldn't bring himself to rummage through the other guard's pockets. He made for the entrance, deciding to make himself scarce while he still had a chance.

The entrance led to a stairway that led up, proving his conjecture that he had been underground right. He stealthily made his way up the stairs, carefully listening for signs of activity.

He encountered a door atop the stairs. He carefully tested it, hoping it wasn't locked. He was relieved that it wasn't locked.

He opened it slowly, fearing any sound would give him away. The door led to a wide dimly lit hallway. He stretched his head out, alert and ears cocked, but there were hardly any sounds.

He made his way out and shut the door behind him. He picked out a side of the hallway and began walking carefully.

The entire building was eerily silent, as if there was nobody around. However such a big building needed a lot of work to clean yet it looked clean and well maintained, making him wonder where the servants and attendants were.
