Chapter 2 - Retreat

The edge of the blade above me slashed down, cleaving through the air. I closed my eyes, the foreboding gaze of death looming over me. The tears welling up from the pain falling from my eyes. And then a faint warmth seeped through the crotch of my pants.

Oh come on! I can't even die with dignity!

Just as I could feel the cold chill of metal touching my neck, a loud clash of metal echoed through the night. I opened my eyes, scanning the area. There, I caught a glimpse of two figures battling it out: one in flowing light blue robes, wielding a spear, and the other in black, wielding a sword. Hope bloomed in my chest as the corners of my mouth curled up.

Senior sister!

I watched the fight from a distance in relief. I pulled the dagger out of my palm, hissing as blood gushed out of the open wound. Clambering up, I ripped off a bit of my sleeve and wrapped it around my hand to stop the bleeding. Then, I grabbed my sword, looking back at the still-on-going fight. I propped myself up, tightly clutching the hilt as I circulated what qi I had left through my body. Once some of the pain subsided, I steadied myself, prepared to join the fight. Even if I won't be much help, I can't just lie down and do nothing!

I turned around to the clashing noise, but I was met with a blue-clad figure's back inches away from me.

Senior sister?

She crashed into my face. We both tumbled onto the ground, and another wave of pain washed over me. I groaned, feeling the weight of Sister Dōngquè on top of me. She grunted, clutching her side as she slumped over me to the ground. I shook my head before staggering up once more.

"Don't!" Senior sister grabbed my wrist, pulling me back down.

My brows furrowed, but I saw the panic in her eyes. I put my sword back in its sheath and nodded.

Her grip loosened. "We need to retreat."

"But-"

"We have to report this to the sect, if we die it'd be for nothing!" she argued, wrapping her arm around my waist as she hoisted me atop her shoulder.

"Besides, you're injured, you can't fight in this state."

I was just about to argue back when a groan escaped my mouth.

Damn it.

Her brow raised before looking back at the demonic cultivator. He looked back, tossing his sword to the side, his face neutral.

"I have a grudge against your junior, leave him and you can live," he said, taking a few daggers from his sleeve.

I felt Sister Dōngquè's hold around me tighten, glaring at that demon before turning to run.

I could hear a sigh from behind, "I gave you a chance."
