On high alert, Logan quickly stood up and looked at the girl who had attacked him.
The nice and warm smile had completely disappeared from her face. Instead, she looked at him coldly while grabbing a knife from her waist.
Lighting the blade on fire, the girl started running towards him.
However, as the girl charged at him, Logan noticed something strange.
As she ran, her pace got slower and slower, halting completely a few feet away from him.
Then, before Logan could realize what had happened, he heard a loud rustling sound as the girl was pulled back to the door.
Finally getting a good look, Logan watched as Silas grabbed the girl by her head mid-flight. The girl flailed and struggled, but Silas didn't care.
Logan heard a loud crunch as Silas crushed the girl's skull with his bare hand.
The rest of the girl's body fell lifelessly to the ground while Silas looked at Logan and rushed over.
"Are you alright?" Silas asked, his body still bloody with bits of brain all over it.
"Yeah..." Logan tried to hold in the urge to vomit, but he couldn't fight it any longer.
He threw up beside him until his stomach was empty.
Glancing down at his body, Silas realized the state he was in. "I'm sorry for that," he said awkwardly.
"No... you are all good," Logan said, still gagging. "I should be thanking you for saving my life."
"No, you shouldn't thank me," Silas said, shaking his head. "I did nothing. She was only a silver core."
Standing up, Logan slowly started feeling better, freely able to look around again without feeling the need to throw up.
Looking at the girl's corpse on the floor, Logan felt a little dizzy.
'I hadn't imagined something like this would happen already,' he thought, confused.
"Looks like this one was a warning," Silas said, walking over to the corpse.
"A warning?" Logan questioned, not understanding.
''Normally, you'd wear a strong body suit. Everyone knows that,'' he continued. "Despite knowing that, they still sent a mere silver-core assassin."
"Are they trying to scare me in the hopes that I rescind the investigation or something?" Logan asked, looking at Silas.
"Something like that," Silas answered, inspecting the corpse up close.
While Silas continued inspecting the corpse, Logan started thinking.
'This wasn't planned for,' he thought. 'It seems that I've accidentally made the board members angrier than I'd expected.'
Standing up, Silas turned to Logan.
"Should I start an investigation immediately?" Silas asked, serious.
"What are the chances you'll be able to find out who's behind this?" Logan asked, still in thought.
"They aren't high for something like this," Silas said, shaking his head. "But if we get started now, we might be able to find some traces."
Logan looked at Silas in silence, lost in thought.
'According to Silas, the odds of finding anything are low,' Logan thought. 'An investigation like this would likely take a long time too.'
That's when it clicked.
'They might not be trying to get me to rescind my order at all,' Logan thought. 'The natural response to this would be launching an investigation—which costs time.'
'Time is what the board members currently need to cover their tracks within the company.'
'Whoever sent the assassin must already suspect I know what they've been doing.'
'So instead of waiting, they decided to strike first and distract my attention away from the internal investigation.'
Glancing once more at the corpse in disgust, Logan turned to Silas.
"Don't bother with an investigation," he said. "Just clean this mess up and make sure there's not a trace of this happening reported."
Silas looked at Logan in confusion, not sure he'd heard it correctly.
"Are you sure?" he asked.
"Yes," Logan responded.
Silas gave a nod before turning around and leaving.
'I have to get stronger,' Logan thought, watching Silas return to his room.
'My life would've been seriously in danger if it wasn't for Silas.'
Taking out his phone, Logan sent Edric a message. 'I can't let this happen again.'
'It's about time to start training spells,' he thought. 'I'll also ask him about what I need to do when I upgrade my core to Bronze.'
Minutes later, Edric opened the door to Logan's room.
Getting hit by the awful stench, he looked into Logan's room with a disgusted but worried expression on his face.
Looking down, Edric found Silas turning a headless corpse into ice.
"Hello," Silas said, raising one hand to greet Edric while keeping the other high above the corpse.
"Where's Logan?" Edric asked immediately.
"He's fine," Silas answered, fully encasing the maid's body. "And he's waiting for you at his training room."
Then, with the flick of his fingers, the corpse shattered into countless miniature pieces.
"What happened?" Edric then asked, relieved to hear Logan was fine.
"Silver-core assassin," Silas answered, opening a nearby window.
Using the secondary affinity he unlocked as a silver rank, Silas summoned a wind that carried to the tiny ice shards out the window.
"That's that," Silas said, clapping his hands against each other a few times.
Walking past Silas, Edric went through a set of open metal doors.
Inside the next room was a spacious gym, equipped with countless training weapons and targets to train on.
Edric found Logan browsing through the training weapons, occasionally picking one up before putting it away again.
"Are you alright?" Edric asked, wanting to make sure there really wasn't anything wrong with Logan while walking towards him.
"Yeah, the body suit saved me," Logan said, putting down a metal staff.
Edric fell silent for a second.
"You can still take the orders back now and live in safety," Edric then said. "With the money you already have access to, you can support your cultivation until you reach the top."
"I know," Logan said, turning to Edric. "But I refuse to let those leeches eat away at the company."
Edric was stunned, gaining even more respect for Logan.
"Alright then, let's get you started on some training," he said, smiling broadly.
