Chapter 7 - CHAPTER 7: UNRAVELING THREADS

The tension in the air was palpable as Sara and Kara stood at the entrance of the Villanueva estate. Sara had agreed to meet her mother one last time before things spiraled even further. The lie was out, and now, all that remained were the broken pieces of a family that had never been whole.

Sara was still trying to wrap her mind around everything. Her life-her identity-had been twisted in ways she couldn't have imagined. But the one thing that remained unchanged was the bond she felt with Kara. Despite the years of separation, despite the anger and the hurt, Kara had become the one person who truly understood her.

Kara stood beside her, her expression unreadable, though Sara could feel the weight of her support. It was a comfort, but also a reminder that things were far from over.

"You're doing the right thing," Kara said softly, squeezing Sara's hand.

Sara nodded, taking a deep breath. "I just don't know how to face her. How do you look someone in the eye after everything?"

Kara didn't answer immediately. Instead, she gave Sara a knowing look, one that spoke volumes about the shared pain of their past. "I don't know. But you don't have to do it alone. I'm here."

The words gave Sara a little more strength, and with one final glance at Kara, she stepped into the house.

Inside, the atmosphere was thick with silence. Victoria sat in the living room, her posture rigid, as if waiting for Sara to make the first move. Her eyes were tired, dark circles under them from nights of worry. She had always been a proud woman, but now, she seemed smaller, more fragile, as though the weight of her choices was starting to crush her.

"Sara," Victoria said, her voice soft but strained. "Thank you for coming."

Sara didn't sit immediately. Instead, she stood in the doorway, her arms crossed over her chest, trying to keep her composure. She wasn't sure what she expected from this meeting, but she knew it wouldn't be easy.

"I don't know what you want me to say," Sara replied, her voice steady, though there was an edge to it. "You lied to me, Mom. You kept me from the truth for years. I don't know how to just forget that."

Victoria stood up, her eyes brimming with unshed tears. "I never wanted to hurt you. I thought I was protecting you. I thought if you knew the truth, it would tear us apart."

"You didn't trust me," Sara said, her voice quieter now. "You thought I wouldn't be able to handle it. But that wasn't your choice to make."

Victoria's hands trembled as she reached out, but Sara took a step back. "Please, don't. I'm not ready to forgive you. Not yet. You kept me in the dark for my whole life. How do you expect me to just move past that?"

Victoria lowered her hands, her face pale. "I didn't know how else to protect you. I've spent every day of your life trying to do what was best for you. But I see now that I failed."

Sara stared at her mother for a long moment, the bitterness rising in her chest. "It's too late for apologies. I just want answers. Why didn't you tell me the truth sooner? Why keep me locked in a lie?"

"I was scared," Victoria whispered. "I was scared of losing you, Sara. I didn't know what else to do. And when I found out... when I realized the truth... it was too late to fix it. I thought if I kept you with me, you'd never have to know. But now, I see that it was the wrong choice."

The silence that followed felt suffocating, and Sara was tired of hearing excuses. She had heard them all before. But there was one thing that she needed to know.

"Where is she?" Sara asked, her voice trembling despite her efforts to stay composed. "Where's Kara's real family? Why did you keep me from them?"

Victoria flinched, the question hitting her like a physical blow. "I didn't keep you from them," she said quickly, almost defensively. "I just thought it was better for you to stay here. It wasn't easy, Sara. But I thought you were better off with me."

Sara's heart pounded in her chest, a whirlwind of emotions crashing over her. "But I don't belong here, do I? I belong with them." She was trembling now, her eyes filling with tears she hadn't realized were waiting to fall.

Victoria closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek. "You belong with both of us. And I'll do anything I can to make this right. But please, Sara... don't shut me out. I can't lose you."

Sara turned away, her heart heavy with the words she didn't want to say. "I don't know if I can forgive you," she whispered. "Not yet. I need time."

And with that, she walked out, her footsteps echoing in the silent house.

Kara was waiting for her just outside the gates, her eyes scanning the street as Sara approached. She didn't ask what had happened, didn't push for details. She just held out her hand, silently offering Sara the comfort she so desperately needed.

Sara took her hand, squeezing it tightly, and they walked away from the house together.

"You okay?" Kara asked softly.

Sara nodded, though her mind was a whirlwind. "I don't know. But I'm done being part of her lie. I need to know the truth, Kara. I need to know who I really am."

Kara glanced at her, her expression determined. "And you will. We'll figure this out. You're not alone anymore."

They continued to walk in silence, the weight of the past still heavy but a sense of hope beginning to bloom. The truth had come out, but it was only the beginning. The path ahead would be long, full of obstacles and pain. But with Kara by her side, Sara felt ready to face whatever came next.

The night stretched on with a quiet tension that neither Sara nor Kara could escape. They had walked away from the Villanueva house, but the reality of what had transpired still hung in the air. Sara's heart felt heavy, as though the truth had been too much to bear in one sitting. But deep down, she knew she couldn't avoid it any longer.

As they reached the park, a familiar place of refuge for both of them, Sara felt the weight of her mother's words pressing on her chest. She hadn't expected the conversation to go the way it had. She hadn't expected the apology, either. But despite the tearful confession, nothing had felt resolved. If anything, it had only created more questions.

Kara sat beside her on the worn wooden bench, their shoulders nearly touching, though the distance between them felt wider than it had in a long time.

"You're quiet," Kara said softly, breaking the silence that had settled between them.

Sara stared out across the darkened park, the dim glow from the streetlights casting long shadows on the ground. "I don't know what to feel. Part of me wants to scream at her, to make her understand how much she hurt me. But... I don't know if I can. I don't know if I'll ever forgive her."

Kara turned her body toward Sara, offering her full attention. "You don't have to forgive her right now. Not today. But you're allowed to feel what you feel, no matter what that is. It's okay to be angry. It's okay to be confused. It's okay to not know."

"I've always felt like I was meant to be something more. Like I didn't belong here, in this family, in this life," Sara murmured. "And now... now I find out I was right. Everything's a lie, Kara. Everything."

Kara leaned her head against Sara's, the simple touch offering comfort in the midst of Sara's swirling emotions. "You're not a lie, Sara. You're real. And no matter what happened before, you have every right to be who you are now. You are so much more than what they made you believe."

Sara's lips trembled, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. "I don't even know who I am anymore."

Kara stayed silent for a long moment, then gently reached for Sara's hand, squeezing it with strength. "You're you, Sara. You've always been. And if you're lost right now, that's okay. But you'll find your way."

Sara looked over at Kara, her heart aching with the desire to believe those words. "I just feel like everything is slipping away from me. The truth, the lies, my family-nothing feels solid. Not anymore."

Kara's grip tightened, her voice steady. "You'll figure it out. You're not in this alone, remember?"

Sara took a shaky breath, trying to steady herself. "But what about you, Kara? What about your real family? Your real life?"

The question lingered between them like a cloud, heavy and unresolved. Kara hesitated, her gaze dropping to their intertwined hands. "I don't know what to say, Sara. I didn't grow up with them. I didn't know who they were. My whole life was built on the idea of being someone I wasn't. But now... now that I've found out the truth, it's hard. There's so much to process."

"Do you want to meet them? Your real family?" Sara asked, her voice hesitant.

Kara's eyes flickered with uncertainty. "I don't know. I guess part of me does. But then there's the fear of everything changing. What if it doesn't feel like home? What if it makes things worse?"

Sara nodded slowly, understanding the deep inner turmoil that Kara must have been feeling. "It's scary, isn't it? Finding out everything you knew was wrong. And then trying to figure out if the truth is even better than the lie."

Kara squeezed her hand again, a small but reassuring gesture. "We don't have to have all the answers right now, Sara. We just have to take one step at a time. Whatever you decide, I'll be there."

Sara turned her head to meet Kara's gaze, her voice thick with emotion. "Thank you. I don't know how I would do this without you."

Kara smiled softly. "You're not alone, Sara. You never were."

The next morning, Victoria sent another message, this time with a sense of urgency that Sara couldn't ignore.

> "Please come home. There's something I need to explain to you. It's time you know everything."

Sara had debated ignoring the message, running from it as she had so many times before. But there was something in the way Victoria phrased it that felt different. Something had shifted, and now, it seemed like the moment for answers had arrived.

As she entered the Villanueva house once more, Sara couldn't help but notice how cold it felt. The rooms, once filled with laughter and warmth, now felt hollow.

Victoria was waiting for her in the living room, her posture still stiff but with an air of resolve that hadn't been there before.

"I don't know how much longer I can keep this from you," Victoria began, her voice quiet. "The truth about your real family... about your father. You deserve to know, Sara."

Sara stepped into the room, her gaze fixed on her mother. "I've been waiting for this. For you to finally tell me the whole story."

Victoria nodded, her eyes filled with guilt. "Your father... he was a man I loved, a man I never thought I would have to keep you from. But he wasn't who I thought he was. There were things about him, things that would've endangered you if you had ever known the truth."

"Endangered me?" Sara repeated, her confusion growing. "What do you mean?"

Victoria looked away, her hands trembling as she spoke. "He had enemies. Dangerous ones. He wasn't a simple man, Sara. He was involved in things that could have destroyed both of us. When I found out I was pregnant, I had to make a choice. I had to protect you, and I chose to keep you away from him."

The words hit Sara like a thunderclap. She stared at her mother in disbelief. "So, you kept me from him to protect me? But from what?"

Victoria sighed deeply. "He was part of something... something I couldn't explain at the time. And when he died, I knew it wasn't over. I knew the people he had wronged wouldn't just disappear. So, I had to make sure you were safe. And keeping you with me was the only way."

Sara was silent for a long moment, trying to process the magnitude of what her mother was saying. "So, what happens now? Is he really gone? Is it finally over?"

"I don't know," Victoria admitted, her voice strained. "But what I do know is that you deserve to make your own choice now, Sara. You need to know the truth, and whatever you decide from here on, I'll support you."

Sara swallowed hard, the weight of her mother's confession sinking in. For the first time, she truly felt like the walls were crumbling around her, and she didn't know if she was ready to face what was coming next.

But there was no turning back now.
