Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6:TIDE OF CHANGE

Sara woke up to the heavy silence of the morning. She had barely slept, her mind racing with a thousand thoughts that refused to quiet. The revelation from her father, the long conversation with Kara-it all felt like a blur, like a nightmare she couldn't wake up from.

But it was real. Too real.

She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, the weight of everything pressing on her chest. She was no longer just a daughter of the Villanueva family-she was someone else's daughter too. And that truth... it left her feeling lost, adrift in a sea of questions without answers.

The sound of her phone vibrating on the nightstand broke the stillness. She reached over, glancing at the screen. It was a message from her mother.

> "Sara, we need to talk. Come to the house as soon as you can. It's important."

Her heart skipped a beat. Her mother had been distant, and Sara had avoided confronting her ever since the truth had come out. But now, it seemed there was no escaping it.

With a sigh, she threw the covers off and stood up, her feet cold against the floor. She had to face it all-her mother, her father, her real identity. And most of all, she had to figure out what came next.

The house felt different as she walked through the front door. The same walls, the same furniture, but there was an emptiness in the air, as if the very heart of the home had been ripped out.

Victoria stood in the living room, her back to Sara as she looked out the window, the light streaming through the curtains and casting a soft glow on her face. She looked more fragile than Sara had ever seen her, like a woman who had been carrying a burden too heavy to bear for too long.

"Sara," she said, turning slowly. "You're here."

"I got your message," Sara replied, her voice cautious. "What's going on?"

Victoria's gaze softened, but there was no warmth in it, only the sadness of someone who had lost too much. "I know this is hard to understand," she began, her voice tight, "but I need you to know that everything I did, I did because I thought it was what was best for you. For all of us."

Sara frowned. "What do you mean? I don't understand."

Her mother took a deep breath, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "When you were born, Sara, everything changed for us. Your father and I- we couldn't just let you go. We made a choice, and it was a choice that we thought would protect you. But I know now that keeping the truth from you was a mistake."

Sara's pulse quickened. "So, it's true. I was switched. I'm not really your daughter..."

Victoria's face crumpled with the words, as though they physically pained her. "You are my daughter," she said firmly, stepping toward Sara. "You've always been my daughter. That's not something that changes. But I kept you in the dark because I was terrified of losing you. I was afraid that if you knew, you'd leave. Or worse, you'd hate me for the lie."

Sara's chest tightened, and for a moment, she couldn't speak. The truth was too much to bear. "But you kept me away from Kara, from the family I'm supposed to belong to. Why? What about her? Does she even know?"

Victoria hesitated. "Yes, she knows. But it's not that simple. She's been just as much of a victim in this as you have. The two of you were never meant to be apart, but the circumstances... they weren't something we could control. I thought if I kept you with us, you'd be happy. But now I see... now I see how much I've hurt you both."

Sara could barely look at her mother, the betrayal running deep. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you ever tell me the truth?"

Victoria's eyes welled up. "I was afraid, Sara. Afraid of what it would mean. And I couldn't bear the thought of you hating me. So I kept the lie going, hoping that someday, it would all make sense. But now, I see it-this isn't just a mistake. It's a broken trust. And I don't know how to fix it."

The silence that followed was thick and suffocating. Sara wanted to yell, to scream at her mother for the years of lies, for the stolen truth that had shaped her entire life. But instead, she felt numb, her words tangled in the mess of emotions that churned inside her.

"I need to go," she said quietly, her voice flat.

Her mother reached out a hand, but Sara pulled away, not ready to face any more words, not yet.

Without another word, Sara turned and walked out the door, her mind spinning, her heart breaking with each step she took away from the house that was no longer home.

Kara was waiting for her when she returned to the park. She didn't need to ask if Sara had talked to her mother. The look in her eyes said everything.

"I did," Sara muttered, sinking onto the bench beside her.

Kara sat down next to her, their shoulders barely touching. She didn't say anything at first, just let the silence stretch between them, comfortable yet heavy.

"You were right," Sara said at last, her voice barely audible. "It's all true. My whole life has been a lie."

Kara turned toward her, her expression soft. "You're not alone in this, Sara. You never were. You have me, and I'll never leave you."

Sara let out a shaky breath. "I don't know what to do now. Everything's changed. I don't even know who I am anymore."

Kara reached out and took Sara's hand, holding it firmly in hers. "You are Sara Villanueva, no matter what. And if you need to find out who you really are, then we'll do it together. One step at a time. We'll figure it out."

Sara squeezed her hand, her heart aching but also feeling a flicker of hope. She didn't know what the future held, or how this would all unfold. But for the first time, she didn't feel so alone. She had Kara. And that meant more than she could ever say.

"I'm scared," Sara admitted.

Kara nodded. "I know. But we'll get through this, I promise."

Sara glanced up at the sky, the stars twinkling like distant promises. "Together?"

"Always," Kara said softly.

And for the first time in a long while, Sara believed her.

The following days were a blur for Sara. She had faced the truth, but it felt like everything was falling apart in slow motion. Each conversation, each moment with her family, seemed to push her further into a spiral of confusion.

But in all of it, there was one constant-Kara. Despite everything, despite the years of separation, Kara was there, offering comfort, understanding, and the kind of support Sara hadn't known she needed.

They spent hours talking in the park, in their childhood hangouts, even at the small café where they had once gone to escape their families' expectations. It felt surreal to finally be with Kara as more than just a rival, but as a sister.

But the question lingered in Sara's mind: What did this mean for them, for their future?

The Villanueva house felt colder now. Each time Sara walked through its doors, she was reminded of the lies, the carefully constructed walls her mother had built to keep her safe-and imprisoned.

It was evening when she received another message from her mother.

> "Sara, please. I need to see you. We can't keep avoiding this. I promise I'm trying to fix it."

Sara stared at the message for a while before she replied.

> "I'm not sure what you want me to say, Mom. I'm lost right now. I don't know who I am anymore."

The reply came quickly.

> "I understand. Just come home. We need to talk."

Home. The word felt hollow now. But Sara knew she had to go back, to face whatever came next, no matter how painful.

Victoria sat in the living room when Sara arrived, her face drawn, weary. There were no words at first. Only the soft ticking of the clock, the ambient noise of a house that had once been full of life but now felt empty.

Sara walked in slowly, unsure of how to begin. She had so many questions, but they all felt so small compared to the bigger picture.

"Sit down, please," Victoria said softly, gesturing to the couch.

Sara hesitated, then lowered herself onto the sofa, her fingers fidgeting in her lap. "I don't even know where to start," she whispered.

Victoria sat across from her, her hands clasped together. "I know this is hard. I... I've been waiting for this day, but I didn't want it to come like this. I never wanted to hurt you."

Sara looked at her mother, her gaze searching for something-anything-to cling to, but the distance between them felt insurmountable. "You lied to me. You took everything from me. All the years, all the memories-none of it was real. How am I supposed to just accept that?"

Victoria's face crumpled, and she reached for Sara's hand, but the younger woman pulled away. "I did what I thought was best. I didn't want to lose you. I didn't know how to tell you."

Sara shook her head, frustration and pain rising within her. "But you didn't trust me. You didn't think I could handle the truth. You decided for me, without ever asking how I felt."

"I know," Victoria whispered, her voice shaky. "I know, and I'm so sorry. But it wasn't just about me. It was about protecting you. Protecting all of us. Your real family is..." She trailed off, unable to finish the sentence.

Sara could feel the anger bubbling up, but she pushed it down, knowing it wouldn't do any good. She needed answers. Not apologies. Not excuses.

"What happens now?" Sara asked, her voice flat.

Victoria looked at her with pleading eyes. "We move forward. We try to fix what's broken. I want you to know that I've always loved you, Sara. That hasn't changed. You're my daughter, always."

Sara closed her eyes, her heart torn between the woman she had called mother all her life and the truth that felt like a betrayal.

"I don't know if I can believe that anymore," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.

The silence that followed was heavy, oppressive.

Kara had been waiting for Sara at the park again, the spot where they had found solace so many times before. This time, though, there was no comfort in the air. Sara was too lost, too overwhelmed by the whirlwind of emotions inside her to find peace.

"You okay?" Kara asked softly, standing up as Sara approached.

"I don't know," Sara said, sinking onto the bench beside her. "I don't know what I'm supposed to feel. I don't even know who I'm supposed to be anymore."

Kara sat next to her, not speaking at first, just offering her presence. She had always known how to be there for Sara, even when they were worlds apart.

"I'm scared, Kara," Sara confessed, her voice trembling. "I feel like everything's falling apart. My entire life has been a lie. And I don't know if I can ever trust anyone again."

Kara placed her hand on Sara's, her grip warm and steady. "You don't have to have it all figured out right now. No one expects you to. We'll take it one day at a time, okay?"

Sara nodded, tears welling in her eyes. "I just want to feel whole again. I want to feel like I belong somewhere."

"You belong with me," Kara said, her voice firm with conviction. "You've always belonged with me. We're sisters. And no matter what happens, that will never change."

Sara leaned into her, grateful for the reassurance. Despite everything, despite the hurt and the pain, Kara's words anchored her in a way that nothing else had.

"We'll figure this out together," Kara continued, her tone gentle yet resolute. "One step at a time."

Sara squeezed her hand, the faintest trace of a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Together."

And for the first time since the truth had come crashing into her life, Sara felt a flicker of hope. Maybe she couldn't change the past, but the future? That was something she could still control. And with Kara by her side, maybe it was possible to find peace again.
