Twilight fell across Ashveil Academy, bathing the spires in purple. Otoku was on the top balcony of the Sixth Tower, the wind catching at his robes. In the courtyard below, lanterns shone like beacons of new knowledge, new challenges. But up here, far above, the air was filled with the taste of memory and half-whispers.
Noctis sprawled at his feet, tips of his wings glinting silver as they grazed stone. Noctis's familiar purple eye went to Otoku, sensing something strained in the atmosphere. "Something stirs," Noctis said aloud in his thoughts. "The wards fray."
Otoku bobbed, palm straying near the Companion tied at his hip. "The Heart of the Veil speaks," he spoke low. "We've revealed its door—now we find the key."

Midnight Council
Within the round room below the balcony, Iseri, Maeve, and Korrin huddled at a rune-carved table. Candles drifted above, their gentle shadows dancing across worried faces.
Iseri struck a silver dagger against the floor. "The scroll indicated memory wards defend the vault under this tower," she said. "They keep secrets captive with trapped thoughts."
Maeve ran her fingers over a map sketched in moon-ink. "We have to unwind each ward individually—fear, doubt, regret. Only then will the secret staircase manifest."
Korrin crossed his arms. "We'll have to tap into our loop-magic in harmony with each other. One misstep, and we could end up stuck in our own regrets forever."
Otoku's eyes met theirs in turn, calm determination glinting in his silver eyes. "We've walked through specters of memory before. Together, we'll pave the way."

The Stair of Memories
Twenty minutes later, far within the heart of the tower, they stood before a plain stone wall impressed with six slight symbols: a flame, a shadow, a tear, a smile, a lock, a key.
Maeve's voice was low, "Every symbol has an echo." She raised her hand to the flame glyph. "My first ward: regret." Her telepathic light flared, and in the background of her eyes danced a memory from childhood—laughter that broke into brittle bits when her sister got ill. Naming it, the flame pulsed and disappeared.
Then Iseri pressed the shadow mark. Her heart pounded with a fear of childhood—lost in the Bleeding Woods. She called it out, and the symbol dissolved into ash.
One after another, they placed their hand on each glyph—Otoku his last regret, the burden of Lirael's selflessness, Noctis his solitude in emptiness. At the disintegration of the sixth symbol, the wall vibrated and opened to a stairway carved into the stone that curled downwards, under a blue luminescent glow.

Chamber of the Heart
At the bottom lay a huge chamber. At the center floated a heart of crystal—half pure light, half void-black shadow. Streams of memory pulsed within, every beat ringing in the walls.
Otoku advanced, Companion in hand. "The Heart of the Veil," he whispered.
Noctis's growl echoed in his head. "It tells truth."
Iseri stood firm beside him. "Remember: we forge its purpose, but it must accept our will."
Otoku drew out the Companion to the heart. Lirael's missing chapters blazed on the page:
> "By light embraced and shadow faced, the Veil's heart shall yield its place."
He uttered the incantation firmly. Void and fire intertwined about him, tapping power from each of their resolve. The heart shuddered, then rent apart—light and shadow threads uncoiling towards them.

Revelation and Resolve
As the twin energies of the heart blended together into a unified beam, Otoku beheld visions of potential futures: cities repaired through loop magic, kingdoms blessed under truth, and dark timelines where hope was consumed by power. The vision disappeared, leaving him gasping.
Noctis elbowed his arm. "What was it?"
Otoku shut his eyes, voice firm with conviction. "What we battle for: choice, not destiny. I choose to defend light and shadow—so no cycle cycles in darkness."
The crystalline heart dropped gradually into Otoku's palm, its radiance beating in synchrony with his heart. Iseri, Maeve, and Korrin moved forward, their hands touching his in unity.
Above, the tower walls whispered as wards reshaped themselves in gratitude. The hidden staircase sealed, but the Heart of the Veil pulsed softly, carried by Otoku's will.
