-Just a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train going anywhere
Just a city boy
Born and raised in South Detroit
He took the midnight train going anywhere...
-Isn't that a little old man's prom song?
Spinning Gwen around, I catch her in my arms, snuggling closer to her frail figure.
-It's a song that never gets old, so don't grumble.
-I love it!
Laughing in my voice, I gave myself over to the dance, enjoying the girl's cheerful smile. Today we were attending Gwen's event, which was fundamentally different from mine. Unlike Midtown High School, Stevenson High School was wealthier and, thanks to an infusion of money from parents, could afford to rent a restaurant.
And now we were spinning on the dance floor at one of Manhattan's most amazing waterfront establishments. It's a little enviable.
-Fuh, I'm honestly tired," Gwen shook off a loose strand and pulled me toward the food tables, "How about a break, sporty guy? Or are you going to dance me all over the place tonight?
But I was no longer listening to my friend, filling my plate with appetisers and delicacies in the most brazen manner.
-М? А! Yes, of course, a break.
-I don't think I'm the one on your mind today, Sean Sullivan. -No, of course not.
-Of course not, -I'm gonna finish chewing and put my plate in front of the blue-eyed beauty, -But look at this shrimp. It's the size of a baby's hand!
Ha-ha-ha.
-You don't understand my poor soul.
-You don't look poor," she leaned her head on her shoulder and sat down on the sofa nearest to the tables, slapping her hand on the seat next to her, "we have students from the social programme at school, and they look completely different.
-Well, if I lived a normal life in an Irish neighbourhood, then yes. Sweatpants, cap, high-top trainers.....
-For some reason I thought Irish people wore green caftans...
-Because you're a little racist," I poked the girl's nose with my fingertip and fell down beside her, stretching out my legs with pleasure, "Ugh, it's so uncomfortable in shoes. They're too tight.
-I should have taken the paper out.
-Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Very funny.
Gwen's graduation party was going on in such a fun way that I wasn't getting much attention. Of course, at the beginning of the event, the girl friends were shooting their eyes in our direction, constantly bantering and sometimes dragging my date to talk in the toilet cubicles, but now.... As the celebration progressed, no one cared. Great music, light alcohol, snacks and dancing. All of these things were more important to the former schoolboys than some Irish bloke who had stolen all the attention of the lovely Gwen.-So," she stood up on her feet, adjusted her dress and proudly lifted her nose, and held out her hand demandingly, "I'm ready to continue! And I hope my legs will be sore tomorrow, so do your best, Sean.
-Hmm, sounds like a challenge, princess. How about a little libertango?
-Ha-ha, definitely not, -Gwen wagged her finger at me and twirled round in place, lifting her dress, -I'm a simple girl....
-Ah, I see," I pull the girl to me, shooting my eyes at the surroundings, "there are only poor people around. And I was hoping to find a girlfriend from a rich family.
-So I'm your girlfriend after all? -So I'm your girlfriend?
Playing with words and intonations, we spun around the hall, teasing each other to the envy of many of Gwen's classmates. Oh, yeah. I could see the envious looks they were giving the girl. I don't know how Stacey usually dressed and acted, but today she shone, especially around familiar faces.
The same dress, light make-up, and the satisfied smile that hadn't left her face all evening. She devoted most of her time to me, sometimes just ignoring the suited suitors who hoped to snatch some of her attention.
And now, another fortune seeker was simply sent away while the girl enjoyed her drinks, taking a break from our dance runs.
-And you're popular...
-Sean Sullivan, are you jealous? -Sean Sullivan, are you jealous?
-Stop calling me by my full name.
-Dad says it's the easiest way to make a person feel uncomfortable," Stacey sipped some wine and pressed her back against my chest, throwing her head back, "you still haven't answered the question, suspect.
-Oh, lucky to get involved with the daughter of a "bobby."
-Don't be rude to an employee, Sullivan, or your fate will be even sadder....
-Eh," my heavy sigh caused another round of laughter and a satisfied girl, "no, I'm not jealous. It's a free country.
-Ha! -I was jealous of you at your graduation, ha ha.
Her words coincided with the fact that I sipped from my glass and now carefully restrained the urge to spit it all back out.
-You should have seen your face," Gwen tapped me on the back and returned to her favourite spot, snuggling into my arms, "that bitch Kristen almost bit her nails off. And there she was, smiling sweetly.
I didn't comment on it. I know the traps of women like that, and no matter how you answer, you're still an arsehole. So it's easier to just give in.

-It was amazing," we decided not to rent a car this time, but to do the same as most of Gwen's classmates - just take a taxi, so now the girl was happily pulling off her high heels and tucking her legs under her, sitting in the back seat of the world-famous car, "great night. Thank you, Sean.
Pulling me closer, she gave me a tender and sensual kiss, leaving a sweet flavour from the wine and sweets on my lips.
-Ever a pleasure...
I enjoyed paying all my attention to the girl while the taxi driver drove smoothly and leisurely out of the restaurant, following other similar cars.
A veritable cavalcade of taxis was leaving the coast, and in almost all of them the same pattern was repeated.
-Dad's coming in late tonight," Gwen bit her lower lip and shot her eyes at me, igniting desire and anticipation in her body, "will you come over?
-If you ask me to, princess-
Reaching forwards, I almost smashed the girl's face because of the sudden shaking. The car flew onwards with a groan and a creak, weaving Gwen and I into a bizarre figure while the driver swore from the front seat.
A familiar noise of screams, explosions, and groans of metal could be heard all around.
-Hold on!
Without letting the girl panic, I pull her against me, wrapping my arms around her and tucking her under me as my body crashes into the opposite edge of the car.
"Everything's going to hurt for me tomorrow."
But instead of thinking out loud, I mouthed a different thought.
-Are you okay? Are you okay?
-No, no, I'm-- Sean!
I glanced behind me, only just managing to pull the girl back, catching her head just before we were thrown back into the car.
The taxi spun in place after colliding with another car. Our driver continued to yell, pushing the pedal to the floor, but judging by the grinding and abundance of sparks, the wheels had long since left our rig.
-Gwen? Gwen! We've got to get out of here," I kicked the door open with my foot Qi, picking the girl up in my arms, as her body weighed less than a feather, especially for me.
A smack to the driver brought him to his senses, and instead of swearing and swearing, there was a painful whimper from the front of the taxi.
-Get out of the car! It's not going any more!
But as soon as the three of us were out of the car, we had to duck and hide again, covering our eyes from the bright flash.
Before our eyes, the police helicopter, spinning from side to side, clawing cars and houses with its propellers, crashed to the ground, knocking out sparks, concrete and more screams from people.
-Fuck...
There was some kind of horror going on all around. Shots rang out in the neighbouring street and the familiar yellow beams flashed, tearing chunks out of houses and scattering cars.People were running for their lives, bringing more chaos to the streets of New York.
-We've got to get out of here!
With one hand clutching Gwen, who was shaking fearfully in my arms, I ran in the opposite direction of what was happening, looking for a whole car with the girl's classmates. And there were very few of them.
Here and there under the shadow of the night sky crawled out wounded schoolchildren. Apparently, during the fight with the "bobby" mutant shot directly into the centre of our procession, disabling most of the equipment.
-Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on-.
I jumped on the cars, looking for Gwen's friends with my eyes. I had to get them out of here right away. Luck was on my side.
Jumping in front of a group of frightened girls, I grabbed the first one and dragged her with me, including the herd instinct of crying schoolgirls.
Like geese, they followed me, skirting the cars and constantly covering their heads at every loud sound from the neighbouring street, and there was a terrible thing going on. Automatic gunfire, explosions, sirens....
-Fast, we have to find the car! -Fast!
Without noticing it, I became a guiding light for many victims, who flocked to our small team from all sides, like small streams filling the river.
After running away, we ran out to the motorway that leads to the bridge and without a hitch we got on the road, stopping cars, asking people for help.
There wasn't time for explanations, so I just shoved the schoolchildren into cars, ignoring the drivers' indignation. Like herrings in a jar, the teenagers piled in, climbing on top of each other just to get away from the madness going on.
One, three, six cars. A veritable convoy of victims.
Having put all Gwen's friends in the last car, I handed them the girl herself, who all this time, clinging like a monkey, spent at my chest. From the tension and fear the girl's fingers got stiff, so I had to forcefully pull her away from me.
-You all go together, sit in the station, okay? I'll take the next one.
The gophers shook their heads at my question and didn't say a word.
At least, the owners of the car - a young couple, easily agreed to take the girls to the police, where George worked, that's where Gwen will definitely recognise and help.
Slamming the door, I give in to naivety and, like in westerns, slammed on the bumper, giving the car gas.
-Shithead, you're a lot of trouble.
I couldn't act brazenly. Unlike many supers, my hero clothes don't hide easily. But it almost completely obscures my body proportions. I didn't bring a mask either, and where would I put it? So I had to improvise.
My jacket, as well as my shoes and socks, went to the ground, and the sleeves were torn off my shirt without mercy. The white T-shirt worn under the suit was on my face, wrapped in a Wahhabi fashion, completely hiding my head and my conspicuous red hair.
"Fuck, I'm gonna have to pay almost two hundred quid for a suit. It's a hard life as a hero."
Infusing my body with Qi, I let the energy circulate quietly through my body.
Now all I had to do was catch the asshole with the lasers and finally stop his rampage.
Unlike the police, I could be more brazen, so I just had to wait for the moment and follow the fleeing bastard.
Meanwhile, the battle between the lawmen and the mutant was heating up. This time he acted even more brutally, pouring his abilities all over the place.
The humming sound of yellow lasers as thick as a man's body that blasted everyone and everything, destroying the coastal houses. The bastard probably wants to cover himself with people so he can escape again. Distracting the police to rescue all the victims....
Running out into the street with a bunch of broken and damaged taxis, I listened to my intuition just in time, freezing in place. The next second, a SWAT truck flew out right in front of me, ramming into cars, propelled by a yellow beam. There were still people in the truck, but the bastard didn't care about that, he kept firing, pushing the truck out towards the water.
"Bitch! Gotta do something."
Peering around the corner, I saw a muddy figure in rags. Hunched over, all covered in tattered pieces of cloaks and other rags, he held one arm out in front of him, sending a bolt of yellow energy forward while the other was shooting back at the few surviving 'bobbies'.
-Tough...
But despite the sad picture, this was my chance and I had to take it.
My muscles surged, flooded with Qi. The energy swiftly went nowhere, leaving an unpleasant feeling of emptiness. I had about five minutes before I'd be out of action against this walking Star Wars artillery.
-Fucking mutants.
Grabbing the lid of the nearest sewer manhole cover, I leap out from around the corner, hurtling full speed towards the perpetrator. The cover flew out of my hands a second before, overtaking me a couple of times and catching up with the asshole before he could react.
With a clang from the impact, the hatch cover bent the mutant's arm at the wrong angle, and he was twisted by the inertia of the impact. With a jerk of his right arm, leaving the unfortunate special forces alone, the mutant tried to cover himself or knock the unknown object away, but instead, with a painful shriek, he clutched the injured limb to his chest, bending and howling.
A moment of silence enveloped the street. Only wounded civilians screamed somewhere in the distance as I, pushing all my own limits, rushed towards the bastard.
But then my target's head began to slowly turn at the approaching stomp, and his whole arm stuck out in my direction. Metallic glints flashed in the light, and my opponent's hand made an incomprehensible gesture, after which a huge yellow beam burst from beneath the filthy cloak.
"Oh, Rand! You come back, I'll fucking kiss you."
Death literally flashed before my eyes. Jumping to the side, I felt a bolt of humming energy flash across my face. We were only a couple of centimetres apart, and if I hadn't had Qi in my body, I would have flown like a broken puppet, following the truck of Yank's OMON.
My hand touches the ground, but before I can get to my feet, I have to dodge again. My opponent did not wait and had no mercy, continuing to flood the street with a beam that was shifting rapidly in my direction.
And then the parkour race began, with me jumping over debris and rubble as the fat laser raced after me.
"Fat laser... That's why it can't catch up."
The dumb joke brought a smile to my face, but I couldn't see it under the mask.
I galloped like a madman, the time dragging on and on, my body already heavy with fatigue and wasted Qi.
"So how do I get close to you?".
But my question remained unanswered. The policemen who had come to their senses raised all their arsenal, pouring fire into the mutant, and I even saw several bullets pierce his body, but he didn't react in any way, just barely swayed, looking back at his attackers with a vicious glare.
"It's open!".
Picking up a side mirror from a wrecked car from the ground, I throw it at the canopy. Maybe not as hard, but you definitely don't expect that.
The mirror was followed by the rest of the rubbish scattered all over the street. But the finale of my bombardment was a crumpled and corroded Mercedes door, which I spun round and threw with all available force, knocking the asshole off his feet.
Covering himself with his hand from the debris falling from the sky, he was shooting at the cops now and then, torn from all sides, so the throw of my door was a surprise to him.
"A new batch of clanking. He's definitely got a suit under his rags. Maybe you're not so mutant, kid."
-Fucked up.
The quiet voice of the criminal rising to his feet must have been heard by everyone involved in his apprehension. Having carried out incomprehensible manipulations under his cloak, the "mutant" shot out of his hand, overturning the remaining police cars. He spun in all directions, showering a powerful yellow beam all around him. A veritable riot of energy that destroyed everything in its path.
A couple of high-rises that stood nearby, starting a coastal street, crackled dangerously, tilting on their sides.
-Me or them?
Stopping the beam near the base of the building, the culprit tilted his head to the side, addressing the question to me, as there was no one else of capacity left.
Continuing to keep my voice low, I shake my head in the direction of the shambling high-rise, slowly backing up and throwing away the remains of my hastily-acquired projectiles.
-Good choice," he circled around me, still keeping his eyes on the huge house, waiting for me at any moment, even with his back to the dark alley, "I'll remember you. Stay out of my way.
The pissy "mutant" disappeared into the darkness, and later the sound of a sewer manhole closing was heard from there.
