Chapter 23: A Tangled Mess
Hoàng Hải Vân forced herself to eat for the sake of survival, but she didn't forget to ask the two men sitting at the table with her:
"When you saved me earlier, did you see Thế Anh?"
Trần Anh Hùng responded immediately:
"We pulled both of you out of the water, but the eldest young master hasn't woken up yet. He was seriously injured—took a heavy bullet wound."
Sitting here, Hoàng Hải Vân truly felt as if her soul was about to leave her body. She was so weak that even breathing felt difficult.
"Take me to him," she said.
After all, she was a forensic doctor, which meant she had medical knowledge. She might be able to help him.
But why was she so determined to save that man?
Perhaps… it was because, after watching his recorded memories, she couldn't help but feel sorry for him.
Nguyễn Thế Anh lay unconscious in a luxurious, spotless room.
Hoàng Hải Vân approached and examined him.
Phi Toàn's marksmanship was terrifying.
Even while shooting at a moving target—someone leaping out of a speeding car—he had managed to land a near-fatal shot to the chest.
Just a little closer, and it would've pierced the heart.
A shiver ran down her spine.
Good thing the bullet hadn't hit her instead.
After finishing her examination, she had to admit—the medical skills of these two men were impressive.
The wound was healing well, and it looked like the bullet had already been surgically removed.
Feeling reassured, she turned to them and said, "Show me around the island."
The island was breathtaking.
Except for the areas blocked off near the water, the rest of the land was peaceful, pristine, and beautiful.
Its untouched wilderness stretched out in rugged, majestic landscapes, while the air was unbelievably fresh and pure.
If someone were to retire here, it would truly be paradise.
As she wandered, entranced by the scenery, she was suddenly jolted out of her thoughts by the sounds of combat.
Ahead of her, a group of people were engaged in fierce battle on an open field.
Seeing her confusion, Trần Anh Hùng explained:
"You've probably forgotten. Let me remind you—these are the strongest combat robots, personally chosen to be your bodyguards. They're training right now… to help you take revenge."
Hoàng Hải Vân frowned, surprised.
"Revenge?"
Trần Anh Hùng nodded.
"That's right. The underworld was meant to be divided between two powerful factions—the Trần family and the Đinh family.
There was an unspoken agreement between them—to stay out of each other's way.
But the Đinh family broke the truce.
They secretly assassinated the boss.
That's why you trained these assassins—to take revenge.
And if I had to guess, I'd say the people who tried to kill you that night… were also from the Đinh family."
Being out in the fresh air made her feel a little less weak, but the more she learned about this tangled mess, the more her head ached.
"That's enough for now," she sighed.
"I'm too weak to think about all this right now."
