I stood at the balcony rail of the upper wing, my arms crossed, posture firm. It was an attempt at composure that didn't quite reach the depth of my chest. Below, in the dim-lit corridor lined with glowing blue veins of circuitry embedded in the floor, I saw them.
Contrario and Maxi.
He stood there, just like always, shoulders straight, jaw calm, that aloofness that never gave anything away. And Maxi.....she was fidgeting, her cheeks a warm flush I recognized all too well as a lady. She held something in her hand. A chip. And she was offering it to him like it was sacred.
I leaned forward slightly, trying to catch the tone of their voices, the words, but the only thing I saw was her hand brushing his as she passed the chip. A casual touch. But it made something twist in me.
He said something brief, unreadable. Then turned and walked off down the hall, hands in his pockets. I should've just gone back to my office at this point. I should've.
But I didn't.
