I barely made it past the main arch when I saw Renn's pod vanish in the distance, the soft hum of its thrusters lingering like a fading thought. I doubt he told anyone he was leaving. Not even me. Just a nod in passing, one that meant more than it said.
I shoved the thought aside.
I had training to do or I probably would just take time out today to rest.
But before I could even get to the lower lift module, someone stepped in my path.
"Hey, soldier boy," came Maxi's voice, chipper and teasing. "Where you headed?"
She looked toward the flight bay, her lips pursed, brow raised. My eyes flicked in the direction Renn had vanished.
"I was just coming back from patrol duty," I said, voice flat, brushing past her shoulder. "Nothing interesting."
But she moved with me, matching my stride like a shadow laced with perfume and blush.
"Oh? Patrol duty at this hour? You were out there all night? Must've been so quiet you got to argue with your own shadow, huh?"
