Chapter 27 - CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

He glanced around frantically and took a step back when he saw it was only me in the room.

"We were starting to get worried when you didn't return," I said.

"I got kidnapped!" he stalked towards me.

I gasped loudly, my hand flying to my mouth. "Oh, my."

"You did it!" he accused.

"What?" I was offended. "How could you accuse me of such a thing?"

He laughed without humor. "You knew I was getting closer to finding out who you are and tried to shut me up."

"So," I tilted my head. "What'd you find out?"

"Ivy Wells doesn't exist. She didn't learn karate as a kid, nor grew up in a loving home. Everything about you is a lie," he wagged the envelope in his hand in my face.

"Uh oh," Tara said.

"I see," I stared at the file.

"What are you gonna do?" she asked.

"So, if I'm not Ivy Wells, who the hell am I?" I threw the bait.

He paused, taken aback. "Well, that-."

He didn't know.

I chuckled.

"I'll soon find out your real identity," he said.

All he knew was that identity was fake. He didn't know who I was. While that wasn't exactly dangerous, it was a bit disturbing. I'd barely managed to gain back Damon's trust, if he knew I wasn't the Ivy Wells he knew, he'd fall apart. I couldn't let that happen.

"You know George, I'm not the only one who's hiding their identity," I said.

He frowned. "What do you mean?"

I smiled. "Does Damon know you're Alan's bodyguard?"

He stepped back, shocked.

"H-how-."

I stepped closer to him. "Does he?"

"How do you know that?" he asked.

I shrugged not saying anything. He stood straight, composing himself.

"It doesn't matter. I'm working for Damon now, not Alan."

I chuckled. "Is that so?"

I fiddled with my phone. "Didn't you meet with Alan just three days ago to update him on what's going on with Damon?"

He looked surprised. "You can't prove it."

"Can't I?" I smirked.

"Hold on," Tara said.

My phone pinged and I stared at the pictures of him meeting Alan with the exact dates. I held out the phone to him and he stared at it, mouth opened.

"How...?"

"Would you like to hear the audio? It showed the detailed conversation between you and Alan," I shook my head.

"Why are you doing this?" he asked.

I sighed. "Believe it or not, all I want is to protect Damon."

"And you plan to do that by lying?"

I scoffed. "You're one to talk. How do you think Damon would feel if he found out his trusted bodyguard was someone sent to him by his enemy to spy on him?"

I paused. The words hit me so hard, making me stumble. That was exactly what I was doing to Damon, I was no better than George. I'd been so preoccupied with the thought of saving him, not considering what that would cost him. It was too late to go back, all I could do was go forward and face the consequences as they came.

"All I want is to keep him safe," he said.

"So do I."

"I don't believe you," he frowned.

I folded my arms. "Look like we're at an impasse."

"I think so," he held the file tighter.

Damon would be back in any second. I needed to finish it. I couldn't kill him, it'd make a mess on the expensive rug, and there was hardly enough time to get rid of the body. Besides, if Alan found out George went missing, I'd be the first suspect. There was also the fact that Damon cared highly for George, it'd hurt him to know he was dead.

"Who do you think would lose more?" I asked, closing the distance between us so I could look intimidating.

Me.

I would be holding the short end of the stick because I was in love with Damon.

But George didn't know that. I'd rather let him think I was a gold digger than the truth.

"Damon looks up to you. I've seen the way he talks about you and trusts you. Would you ruin it all by letting him know the truth?"

I leaned closer. "That you're a spy and everything was fake?"

"It wasn't all fake," he snapped.

I stared at him; he was slowly crumbling under the guilt.

"You got him, Mia," Tara said.

I smiled. "Do we have a deal?"

The door opened and Damon rushed in with a smile. He paused when he saw George's disheveled look.

"What happened to you?" he asked, dropping the food.

His clothes were torn, and his hair looked like a racoon had slept in it.

George paused, I could see the thoughts churning in his eyes.

He hid the file and tucked it in his pocket. "I got robbed."

Damon gasped. "How?"

He glanced at me. "Ivy mentioned you texted you were going to spend the night at a friend's."

"Yeah, poor thing got lost on the way back," I smiled.

"Go freshen up," Damon said and held my hand.

George paused as he stared at our interlocked hands.

"Did something happen?" he asked.

Damon chuckled. "We're dating."

George scoffed. "Boss, I thought you said you were gonna get rid of her."

I smiled. "That's not happening."

"Boss?"

Damon's eyes met mine. "Yeah, she's right."

He turned to him. "I'm in love with her."

He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me in a hug. My eyes met George's, the side of my lips curling up as I smirked.

He's mine.
