Chapter 42 - Sensory Scroll

Echigo first led Kaiji to the shelf where the single scroll for increasing a ninja's perception at a normal level was located.

He took out the scroll. "This only includes sensory techniques," he said to Kaiji, presenting it.

"And some practice to increase one's perception a little, nothing extraordinary."

He reiterated his earlier point. "As I told you, without innate talent, becoming Sensor Type Ninja is very difficult and you can say close to impossible."

Kaiji took the scroll from Echigo. He started reading the content of it right there, his eyes scanning around the scroll's surface.

And just as Echigo had said, there were indeed written sensory techniques.

These included Contact-Type Sensing, which most sensor types used by channeling their chakra into an external substance, like the ground, to sense anything that came within the chakra-infused medium.

Another technique mentioned was Barrier Ninjutsu Sensing.

This was another basic sensory technique used in almost every village, involving creating barriers specifically designed to detect intrusions by registering and analyzing incoming chakra signatures.

Although this technique was actually not a sensor type ability in itself, when applied on a large scale, such as around a village area, it was considered a Sensor Type Technique for detection purposes.

While Kaiji was reading the content of the scroll, Echigo looked at the wall clock.

Seeing that there was still some time left before closing, he went back to the counter, leaving Kaiji on his own to read the scroll thoroughly.

Kaiji obviously wasn't expecting anything like Kagura's Mind's Eye type sensory techniques from a basic scroll here anyway.

He just hoped that he would get even a little help in increasing his perception, as this would be very beneficial during real battles.

The scroll did indeed describe some exercises to improve a shinobi's perception a little.

First, it stated that one fundamental aspect was the natural capacity for chakra sensing.

While all trained Ninjas possessed a basic ability to perceive chakra in their immediate vicinity, these exercises mentioned below helped improve this level to be a little more than that.

It explained that it increased the sensitivity of ninjas, while a natural born sensor type ninja possessed an inherently heightened sensitivity from birth.

First, the scroll emphasized the importance of mastering basic chakra control, as precise control was needed to manipulate chakra internally and externally for sensing.

Then it mentioned some exercises for improving awareness of any externalized chakra through releasing small amounts of chakra.

For that, one first needed to become acutely aware of his own chakra flow.

This involved meditating to feel the pathways, which Kaiji had done for some time till now.

Then was attempting to isolate and manipulate small amounts of chakra in different body parts.

Visualising one's chakra as a tangible energy they could absorb internally.

Once they mastered this internal awareness, then they could start Chakra Emission practice.

Chakra Emission practice included learning to release a small amount of chakra from the body with a goal to control and gain awareness of this externalized chakra outside of oneself.

That was all that was explained in this scroll about increasing perception at a basic level.

"Phew."

Kaiji sighed, closing the scroll. "It was really just pure basics. It can only increase my novice level to that of a beginner atmost."

Then Echigo came over to him.

"Well, time is over, kid," Echigo announced. "Library needs to close for the day."

Kaiji nodded. He asked for Scrolls of basics of Kenjutsu afterwards.

...

With Echigo, he went outside. However, Echigo just walked out and didn't lock the door.

The guards outside the Library Archive were still standing there, as if that was their permanent spot.

Kaiji understood that it meant that after this hour, until next morning, no one was allowed to enter the library.

But it was obvious that this rule was only for others, not the higher-ups and the Kazekage of the village.

Kaiji then bowed towards Echigo. Both went their own way.

Echigo also told Kaiji that he was not the permanent staff of the library, so next time he visited, he might meet some other staff, and he should return the scroll he had taken to them.

Kaiji, after reading the scroll about Sensory skill, had taken a scroll for basics of Kenjutsu with him.

He wasn't entirely satisfied with the details present in the Sensor scroll, although he would still practice those simple exercises.

But it wasn't the significant boost he had hoped for.

And since he knew that for Iryo Ninjutsu, he had to go directly to the Hospital to find any Medical Ninja, that was out of the question for the moment.

Meanwhile, Fuinjutsu could wait a little. So, he took the scroll for the basics of Kenjutsu.

He moved towards Ren's house, not the Genin Corps department facility.

He went to his house and knocked the door lightly. A soft knock knock echoed.

He then came inside without waiting for explicit permission.

He saw Ren was laying down on his mat. "Sleeping already?" Kaiji asked.

Ren then looked at him and smiled tiredly. "Well," he said, "today was quite tiring."

Ren explained his day. "Reeku sensei has have us train outside the village for like hours straight."

Kaiji chuckled lightly. He sat beside Ren while looking at the outside evening sky of the Village through the window.
