As the atmosphere finally settled from Gabriel's very holy entrance, we all gathered around the oversized living room couch.
It was a weird sight, y'know?
Me--- Daichi, the not-so-ordinary 'kid', sitting on a couch with little Akeno, Kuroka, Rias, Sona… and the literal Archangel Gabriel, who still radiated that soft glowing aura like she was a walking light stick from a gift shop for Heaven's Jpop band.
Rias, still visibly unsure of how to process all this, meekly looked up at me.
"…Daichi," she began, her voice far more subdued than usual. "Do you even know who this is?"
"Yeah." I forcefully turned my face from between the double Mount Everest to face Rias. "It's Mommy Gabbie."
"M-m-mommy---!?" Rias and Sona sputtered as Gabriel softly patted my head. "How can you call the Archangel Gabriel that!?"
"Gee Louise, Willikers, and Golly Gosh, you guys sure spook easily, huh?" I gave them a weird look.
"Not to brag, but while you guys know her for all of these awesome stuff she did in The Bible..." I spoke like a kid coasting by on the fame of their parents who were famous. "But to me, she's always just someone close to me."
"Aww~" Gabriel hugged me even tighter than before.
'This is only the second time we've met, though. But there's no need to tell them that.'
After all, seeing their reactions of shock only made me smile.
"And how… exactly… did you meet Gabriel?" Sona asked me.
The room quieted again as little girls as far as the eye can see were staring at me.
If this was an anime, this would be the part where everyone voices their stares out loud at me onomatopoeic type of way.
Something like...
-jiiiiiiiii/ sfx: stare~
Well, truthfully speaking, it was only four little girls staring at me.
"Our first meeting, huh." I unwillingly pried myself from Gabriel and sat on the couch, resting my chin on my hand, and put on my best 'edgy-anime-manipulator-tactician-mc' look. "Ah, yes. That's quite the tale."
I coughed into my fist dramatically before rattling off:
"It began with what I'd call a… 'sudden borrowing of funds without permission or intent to return'."
Akeno blinked. "…Are you describing theft?"
"No, silly." I scoffed at Akeno. "If it was theft... I'd call it theft. I prefer to call it 'unilateral resource redistribution'."
"I'm pretty sure those are not real words." Rias narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "And I'm also pretty sure that still sounds like stealing."
"Okay, okay," I grinned, lifting both hands, "Maybe it was also an 'unregulated logistical rerouting of unlawfully liberated assets'."
"…Still sounds like stealing," Kuroka muttered, tail flicking.
Gabriel, still all smiles and softness, chimed in sweetly, "He was indeed stealing."
'And I'll do it agai--- wait, I promised not to do it... to innocents, right..?'
"…And then she gave me a heart-to-heart about morality," I muttered under my breath. "And I listened."
Gabriel smiled brightly. "Daichi has the potential to be a very good boy, if he just channeled his cleverness toward helping others."
'Heh, if I were the "potential-man" of good deeds, then I'm gonna kill many people out of disappointment in the future,' I thought with a smile.
"Really? It doesn't look like your lesson stuck, ma'am," Rias leaned forward, squinting at me. "He just switched from money to people instead."
"Is to." I lazily replied.
"Is not!" She replied with a huff.
"Alright, whatever you say, Tomato-chan."
Rias puffed her cheeks after hearing that. "S-stop calling me that!"
"I'll stop when you acknowledge my personal growth."
"You were literally making theft sound poetic two minutes ago!"
"Character development isn't linear, Rias. It's something that happens gradually."
Gabriel simply smiled, seeing this nonsense play out, and the atmosphere lightened again. Eventually, we all settled into a weird circle--- kids from different parts of the world who all gathered around a living room like it were a regular afternoon.
Akeno and Kuroka sat on either side of me again as I somehow found myself on Gabriel's lap, while Rias and Sona sat across, legs crossed, eyes still scanning everything like they weren't sure what kind of hostage situation this was.
Once everyone stopped looking like they were going to spontaneously combust from political anxiety, I cleared my throat.
"Alright, jokes aside," I said, "let me really-really-really-really-reeaaallllyy explain why you two are really here."
Rias and Sona straightened up their postures, with their attention sharper than before.
"This isn't just about me being weird or saving people or playing kidnapper with flair. You're both here because things are getting messy behind the scenes." I paused.
"The Underworld, the Church, and honestly, the whole supernatural world have been teetering on something. There's a problem that no one's addressing directly--- something that's illegal called the [King Piece]."
Sona blinked. "An illegal chess piece?"
I nodded. "Exactly. It's been used to cheat the Evil Piece system. There's shady politics behind it, assassinations, cover-ups. Some of your own high-class Devil nobles might be involved… and some of those people are already moving behind the scenes."
'One might think that I shouldn't tell them about this, but it actually works out in my favor.'
'Yeah, that's right, the sisters of two Maou's know about the secret you're willing to kill to protect, so what are you gonna do about it?'
'Zekram Bael might have the biggest, girthiest, and wrinkliest schlong in the clout measuring contest in the entire Underworld, but even that won't stop him and his faction boys from getting frozen and folded out of existence by an angry Serafall and Sirzechs.'
Rias slowly frowned. "So, this is more than just a prank or rebellion."
"Way more." I looked at both of them. "You two are the little sisters of Maou. You matter. Whether you realize it or not, you're leverage, and you're also voices of influence."
Sona's face turned serious, absorbing my words carefully. "And bringing us here… was your way of getting Heaven and the Underworld to sit down and acknowledge what's happening."
"Yep." I leaned back. "A little chaos. A little drama. But hey, it got people to pay attention."
Rias looked conflicted, her mouth half open. "You know… You could've just asked."
I chuckled. "Would you have come if I did?"
She opened her mouth… paused… then closed it with a scowl.
"Yep. Didn't think so."
I smirked as I looked at these two. 'Hehehehehe! Go on Zekram, try to kill the two heiresses of the Gremory and Sitri Clan and the sisters of the Maou~! They have your secrets~! What if they tattle to their older siblings~!?'
Gabriel turned her head and smiled faintly at me. "You truly are a naughty boy, Daichi. But try not to get yourself hurt, okay?"
"No promises," I said, grinning. "Wait. Actually, I don't really like pain, so I will promise you that."
Akeno giggled quietly, Kuroka rolled her eyes with a grin, and even Sona exhaled a small sigh of acceptance.
Rias just stared at me awkwardly, not believing my innate goodness in my psychology.
Meh. Non-believers.
But now pieces were in motion.
And for better or worse… this bizarre little living room gathering was the calm before the next storm.
Because, right at that very moment...
-voom!-
A bunch of ragtag fellas in search of truth were walking in through a magic circle portal--- Them being Cleria Belial, Diehauser Belial, and Masaomi Yaegaki at the front.
And behind them followed the unmistakable pressure of the Four, ahem, Three Maou.
Anyway, Maou Serafall Leviathan in her frilly blue magical girl outfit with black hair tied in a twintails style that fell to her back as pink(?) eyes adorned her face.
Maou Sirzechs Lucifer in his composed black uniform and medium length red hair, and behind them, the mostly emotionless Maou Ajuka Beelzebub, who looked like he was always thinking about twelve equations and a chessboard mid-fight.
'Looks like the other Maou is asleep. Damn, I could use a couple Z's right now...'
Entering, their eyes made a beeline for--- you guessed it! Rias and Sona.
"Rias!/ My pookie-bear Sona-tan!" both Serafall and Sirzechs called out in unison, storming forward with big-sibling energy.
I looked at Sona and smirked.
"Your sister's calling you, pookie-bear."
"B-be quiet."
"Okay, pookie-monster."
"Y-you!?" Sona huffed as she faced away from me, but I could still see her ears reddening. "J-Just watch your silly show!"
The Maou stepped out of the magic circle expecting to see a tense reunion with their loved ones, but instead they found...
Their little sisters, sitting side by side in front of the TV, were completely engrossed in a rerun of Dinner the Explainer.
[Thank you for finding my shoe!]
[A shoe is an item of footwear intended to protect and comfort the human foot. Though the human foot can adapt to varied terrains and climate conditions, it is vulnerable, and shoes provide protection. Form was originally tied to function, but over time, shoes also became fashion items.]
"See, Daichi? I found the shoe first and told Dinner!" Rias was smugly pointing at the screen as she tapped the sides of her head. "That makes both of us smart."
Akeno giggled as she said, "Lady Rias, this show is made for toddlers."
"Kuroka tilted her head. "Is that girl in the TV… slow~nya? Why can't she find her own shoes? It's been like two minutes."
Sona didn't even look up. "It's a kids' show, not a puzzle box."
And me? Well, I was just chilling. Eating another cookie, my head leaned back against Gabriel's chest, legs dangling.
Warm light, soft hums, and a growing storm behind me.
I might not be the most mature kid on the block, but I was far removed from arguing with Rias over who pointed out what was going on from some silly educational kids' show.
---Also, I saw it as soon as it came up on the TV first, but I didn't say anything about it.
"Hey," Serafall suddenly asked the ghost maid with a voice sharp as ice. "Why are there so many children in this place?"
Sirzechs added as he stifled a severe frown, "And who's the mastermind behind all this?"
"?" The ghost maid sweated in confusion. "Huh?"
It was crazy, I tell ya!
I could feel their aura unconsciously leaking from over here, even with Gabriel's magic soothing my soul.
Wait a minute.
Why aren't they reacting to the fact that I brought Gabriel here!?
I specifically brought her here to lower the tension!!
"Wait a minute, Sirzechs, Serafall..." Ajuka immediately caught on as he narrowed his eyes, seeing the buxom beauty of an angel beside me.
Anyways, about my maid, I didn't even know her name, or how she died and became a ghost, but I couldn't let them just rain pressure on my maid like that.
It would make the work Sebas put into finding this place and these people into nothing!
"That'd be me," I said, getting up and dusting off my pants. "Name's Daichi. I invited them all."
"But I wouldn't call myself a mastermind, though. I'm just someone who took advantage of a tense situation, planned a difficult activity, usually a crime, in detail, and made certain that it happened successfully."
'Hmmn? No one's replying?'
Then---
-boom!-
A wave of Power of Destruction and Ice Magic flooded the room from Sirzechs and Serafall. A dense, tangible aura of wrath only two unrepentant siscons could produce.
"You call that an 'invite', boy?" Sirzechs asked with a voice that sounds suspiciously familiar to a certain evil jujutsu sorceror from the Heian era.
"That's really not a nice thing to do, y'know...☆?"
I could practically hear the big-sibling anxiety screaming through their auras.
I sighed.
I understood their worries, but...
[Worthless]
As I had the [Spirit Organ] working like crazy, their auras eventually flickered and then… soothed like a calm ocean breeze.
Everyone's eyes widened, especially Rias, who leapt to her feet. "Y-You just… you negated my big brother's power?"
'Not exactly, my tomato-haired friend. I'm not on that level yet.'
Ajuka's eyes sharpened. He adjusted his coat, stepping forward with what seemed to be interest. "Interesting. That's no ordinary power. To nullify Sirzechs' Power of Destruction... you must possess a trait similar to the Belial line."
"But that's not the biggest issue right now," Ajuka physically turned both Sirzechs and Serafall to face Gabriel who was just sitting on my couch.
Gabriel, sensing the thickening tension, raised her hand in the air and bathed the room in soft Holy Light.
"Hey guys! No bullying Daichi and the maid!" She said with what I assume to be her trying to make a stern expression, but it was really just a pout.
"He might be a little naughty… but he's still a good boy. He means well."
Only then did the others turn their gazes to Gabriel.
It was first confusion...
And then it was shock...
'Holy fuck, are these guy's such intense sibling lovers that others don't exist in their eyes!?' My eyes bulged out of their sockets in sheer confusion and incredulity.
Cleria's eyes narrowed in disbelief as Diehauser and Masaomi faltered. "Gabriel… from Heaven… is here?"
"What? Why are you here?!" Serafall snapped, her one-sided rivalry with Gabriel still going strong. "Hmmn... You wouldn't be trying to steal my sister, are you!?"
"It must be it!"
"Sorry, but your plan is foiled! Sona-tan is sticking with me!"
'No it's not, you porno Mahou-Shoujo hag.' I sighed.
"Hey! You were thinking something rude, weren't you?"
"Yes."
"This kid!"
Gabriel smiled brightly as Serafall narrowed her eyes at Daichi. "I'm helping Daichi. He asked for it."
Now this admission made the Four- ahem, once again, Three Maou look at me differently again.
I looked over at Cleria. "You were able to explain everything?"
She nodded. "I was. Masaomi, Diehauser, Uncle Bellial, and I spoke with the Maou, and they might help us out."
'Might? We didn't do all of that for a might...' I may have to reevaluate this situation.
Because if this doesn't work, my days are going to get a lot more hectic than usual.
That was when Ajuka stepped forward again, the air around him calculating and clinical.
"I've done my own investigation," he began, eyes fixed on me now. "The Great King Faction have been involved in unauthorized distribution of [KingPieces]. It's a conspiracy in which they were involved alongside the Church."
He went on to say that since he was the creator of the thingamabob, he would see it that the Great King Faction has whatever they've got their hands on to be confiscated, and that everyone involved will be brought into the light and adequately punished.
Gabriel folded her arms, looking cross at the whole situation. "I'll take this up with Michael when I return. This goes against our principles. He'll definitely do something about this!"
'Bwahahahahaha---! Good one, sis!'
I scoffed internally. 'Yeah, sure. Like Michael gives a fat angel feather about it. Bringing it to his attention is pretty useless, especially if no one's dead. He'll probably file it under "wait-and-see.'
I wisely kept that thought to myself.
After all, I brought her here so that no Maou 'accidentally' sent me to the VVVIP super-duper-ultra upper-room to meet where Big G of The Bible went.
Ajuka continued, "Now, let's talk about why you did this, Daichi."
I stared at him...
And he looked right back. "You know... You remind me of someone. That fire. That pride. That need to interfere in things that shouldn't concern you."
"Why I did this?" I muttered, narrowing my eyes. "Simple."
"Because it was my business."
"How was it your business exactly?" Ajuka replied. "From what they've said, they've met you and you saved them..."
"But what made you do it?"
"I dunno, virtue, kindness, being a good samaritan?" I replied. "Seeing people get used, abused, and tossed in the trash for trying to live and do the right thing really ticks me off."
"Even though nothing would befall you if you were to ignore it?"
"Heeeh, I dunno about that..." I shook my head. "That being said, I do like the idea of a safe normal life."
'Hah! I wish. In this world, you don't look for trouble, trouble finds you.'
"I understand that you helped out, but a situation like this, wouldn't be easy to make it worse with one wrong step? That safe normal life you were talking about would become an impossibility just by your very actions."
'Hmmn, sounds like this guy is asking why I decided to help out in the first place? Or is he trying to sense my intentions for helping out?'
"Naturally, while the heiresses of the Gremory and Sitri Clan being here is one thing, I'm wondering about what made you help Cleria over here and her lover."
"Wouldn't it contradict your idea of a safe life in the end if you didn't ignore it?"
'Nope, that's not it at all.' I shook my head.
I attempted to slam the table with my heel, but I was too short and I didn't want to spill the milk in my hands, so I slammed the table in front of me with my empty palm instead.
"OBJECTION!"
Everyone flinched.
"Ignore it?" I scoffed. "Ever heard of the tree and the axe?"
"Naturally, I'm strong enough that it wouldn't apply to me, but the possibility exists, and that's why I can't relax."
"Besides, killing a couple to cover up their misdeeds by using the fact that it's between Humans and Devils? C'mon, it's the twentieth century, that's kinda crazy."
"Besides, it happened in front of me. If it could possibly affect me--- my life, my friends, my future, then I'm pretty sure that's its my business."
'Besides, knowing that back in my old life, my parents went through something similiar, but on a much, much smaller scale really grinds my gears, so it kinda hit close to home.'
"Because I made the decision to make it my business." I spoke like I was in front of a military court spouting my earnest wisdom in a plight to save a few almost lost souls. "And that's the 'truth', and nothing but the 'truth'."
Ajuka's lips quirked. "And what if you can't handle the truth, Daichi? What if the truth doesn't exist?"
"Then I'll create it." I simply replied. "I mean, the guys after her already made their 'truth', and if this had gone the way they'd wanted it to, then lots of people would've accepted it."
I stood tall and pointed at Diehauser. "But what about this guy, Hauser-chan over here?"
"Hauser-chan? I like that name☆!" Serafall chirped while Diehauser shook his head.
"What if this guy here, had his cousin Cleria killed by these guys and they covered it up? Then the idea of her 'Colluding with her lover from The Church' would become the 'truth', and then what?"
"That would make him trying to find the real 'truth' the big bad guy of this whole ordeal, right?"
"And what if he goes off the rails and starts kidnapping heirs because of what happened to his sister? Maybe a few from the Phenex family? To him, you guys letting this slide might be the 'truth' for him!"
Diehauser folded his arms… and nodded. "Not a bad idea, honestly."
Sirzechs frowned and Serafall gasped.
"Haah..." Ajuka sighed. "Your argument is full of sophistry, deflection, fallacies, and emotion."
He smiled faintly. "But I don't mind it."
Sirzechs then stepped forward, brushing imaginary dust off his cape. "Regardless, we've already decided. This will be investigated and Justice will be served."
His eyes narrowed again. "But I'm still very upset that you took my sister with you."
"Hey," I shrugged. "I returned her in one piece. Comes with a free Dinner episode, too."
Gabriel hummed. "Don't worry! I will stick around and help him more. After all, He's still just a boy."
"You can't spoil kids this early, you'll ruin them in the future," Sirzechs warned with a straight face. "You need to be strict, so that they don't grow up needing help all the time."
"Come, Rias. Let's go get some ice-cream."
'Holy cow! Forget a glass house! This guy has a glass mansion and is filling his rocket launcher with boulders and shooting them this way!'
Ajuka tilted his head. "So he's not under your faction?"
Gabriel smiled. "He's not part of Heaven. He's just a boy."
You could hear a pin drop.
Ajuka blinked. "A completely unaffiliated child… helped orchestrate all this."
Sirzechs and Serafall went still, their eyes now calculating instead of furious.
Ajuka leaned over to Sirzechs, whispering something.
With my enhanced hearing, I caught it easily. [Body Modification] works wonders, baby.
(When are you taking Rias to get her Evil Pieces?)
(Pretty Soon.) Sirzechs sighed. (That being said, it might be good for her to meet other people, but… I don't want her spending more time with him. He's a bad influence.)
(Also, she's too comfortable here, it's too early for her to be hanging out with boys...)
(Especially if they're bad boys like this Daichi kid.)
(I also have this premonition that she might invite him over to the Gremory Mansion one of these days...)
(This may be the first time we've met, but if Gabriel keeps on spoiling that boy, he'll only get worse.)
(I didn't ask you about that.) Ajuka snorted. (What brotherly love.)
Hearing this, I started to think about Ajuka's own siblings, and whether or not he would dote on them.
Diodora? Nah.
Latia? She has potential, but to dote on her? Nah.
The rest of the situation began to deflate. Rias ran to her brother, half-complaining about not wanting to go home yet, causing Sirzechs to give me a look as if he were the first guy to feel how women feel giving birth.
"Hey, I'm not forcing her to stay," I said as I sat back down. "No one's stopping her from leaving."
That made both of them freeze.
"…Are you saying my sister isn't cute enough to beg to stay?" Sirzechs asked, tone dangerously low. "What are you plotting?"
"Whatever." I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Damned if you do, damned if you don't…"
As everyone began making their goodbyes, Ajuka paused, scanning the room. "Say… who are those two girls next to you?"
He was looking at Akeno and Kuroka.
"This is my friend Akeno Himejima," I said, "And this is Kuroka."
"Himejima...? Oh, the girl that little miss Gremory ran into." Ajuka said as he muttered something about an obstinate 'clan' slowly growing annoying.
"Hmmn, this Kuroka, was it?" Ajuka plainly said as he looked over Kuroka, making her sweat slightly. "A reincarnated Devil... and a Nekomata at that..."
"How exactly did you get here..."
Kuroka looked at me as if she wanted a go-ahead, and I simply nodded. No matter how much a fanfiction might dumb down certain characters, Ajuka's intelligence always manages to survive, similar to the one percent of bacteria after the multiversal destruction of hand soap.
Meaning that while it may not be 100 percent at full capability in its entirety, it still would survive somewhat, making it a waste trying to hard to fool him.
"N-Naberius, I think..."
(A/N: It's actually two clans: Nebiros, and Naberius. But I always mix them up. My bad.)
So if he wanted to plan something to fuck us over, it would've happened already, ten minutes ago, Ozymand*as style from the funky comics W*tchmen.
He'll probably ask something like 'What happened to the data that you got from the Naberius researchers, or something like that...'
"Naberius Clan, one of the Extra Devil Clans branches under the Nebiros Clan..." Ajuka's eyebrow twitched. "Ah, so would that also make you the one behind what happened with the Naberius Clan a while back?"
'Yep, what did I tell you? Of course he found out.'
"To think that those Naberius guys would team up with the Khaos Brigade of all people." Ajuka sighed. "And you got rid of all of them as they were attempting to move all of their research out of the Underworld..."
"It's fascinating, isn't it?"
Everyone turned to me again.
'Uh, what?'
'Um, everyone? Don't look at me, I have nothing to do with the later part of his words? The Naberius Clan isn't even really relevant till Hades tries to create Super Devils, and that's like in the twenty-something volume!!??'
'What the heck? At least wait till canon before trying to mess with the future timeline!'
'I swear, it's only one more chapter till canon starts! Just an epilogue before a timeskip!"
-sigh-
'The world is so crazy.'
I casually picked up another cookie and bit into it.
"…It tash sho guud~"
