Chapter 45 - Finally doing my job

Two days passed like the echo of a morning breeze, and it was tuesday. The shrill alarm sounded at 5am as usual, but Adam was awake even before then. He jumped out of his balcony, and nulled his gravity just as he was about to hit the ground. He sprinted to the portal station and into the portal leading to the barren wasteland. As soon as he arrived at the other end of the portal, a bloodline suppressor was slammed onto his wrist. His body lost all the enhancement from his bloodlines, but he was already used to it by now.

Even with the unpredictability of the terrains, along with the traps hidden in them, the cadets were getting more and more adapted to the course. Now only a few cadets sometimes trigger a trap, unlike at the start when it was hundreds of cadets. "It seems we would have to change the terrain for the course soon!" said a bearded instructor to instructor Blake. "Hmmm, they've adapted to it!" instructor Blake answered, but if one looked closer, the shadow of a faint smile could be seen on his lips.

The break sequel to the morning run soon passed, and the cadets headed for class. Adam, Tokito, and Owen were on the last row of seats as usual when instructor Cornwell walked in. Honestly, ever since the incident where Adam saw instructor Cornwell at Aurora's office, he just couldn't see the taciturn instructor in the same light anymore. It wasn't that he didn't respect her anymore or something of that sort, hell she was a rank 1, it was just that he sees her from a different point.

"Good morning class, hope your morning experience turned out fine!" instructor Cornwell started. "I have an important announcement to make, but I guess it can wait till the end of the class. Today we'll continue with our last topic, 'Plotting points in space'!" "In our last class we talked about how coordinates are written in space, who can give us a quick reminder?" asked instructor Cornwell. A hand shot up almost instantly, while Adam and Tokito gave each other a look before their eyes shifted to Owen for the slightest of moments, but from the click of his tongue, Owen had felt the gazes. "Yes Ashley?!" said the instructor.

Ashley stood up and began, "The RA(Right Ascension) and DEC(Declination) of an object specify its position uniquely on the celestial sphere just as the latitude and longitude do for an object on a planet's surface. For example, the very bright star Sirius has celestial coordinates 6 hr 45 min RA and -16° 43' DEC!" "Twenty points for cadet Ashley Wellington!" the instructor spoke to her smart bracelet. The class continued like that for the next four hours. ".... but your piloting instructor will shed more lights on this!" instructor Cornwell concluded.

"Now for the important announcement!" the instructor sighed keeping her tablet aside. "Since your midterms are next week, the faculty has planned an outing for you this weekend!" said instructor Cornwell. "Ah you've gotta be kidding me!" Adam sighed. The last time he went on an outing, he spent two week in a coma. "What's with the exasperated sigh?, don't tell me you got a trauma from last time!" Tokito asked. "Try being in a coma for two weeks!" Adam replied rolling his eyes. Meanwhile Owen was being uncharacteristically non hyper—verbal.

Adam wasn't the only one who was pessimistic about the outing, many cadets were also voicing their displeasure, but the instructor wasn't one known to take nonsense. "Enough!" She didn't shout, but her voice reached everyone just the same. After the class quieted down, instructor Cornwell continued, "The outing this time won't be for the special class only, but for the entire first year. So relax, this time I won't be the only instructor coming along!" Those words seemed to bring relief to some cadets.

"You all will be moving in groups of five, so you have the rest of today till Friday to form a group, register said group with the first year's representative!" Those words seemed to pump up the spirits of the cadets, if they could choose like minded cadets, they could do whatever they wanted. "And remember, your group doesn't have to be from the special class, you can also choose from the elite and normal classes. Class dismissed!" said the instructor before she disappeared.

"So we have to look for two more cadets right?" Adam said after the instructor left. "Yep!" "You know it" Owen and Tokito replied in unison. "But the question is who?!" Adam commented. "Who cares, we have until Friday to figure it out!" Tokito shrugged. "You know what you're right, let's go!" said Adam. The trio left the academic block after that and soon arrived at the dorms, before each went to their dorms.

Meanwhile Owen was still thinking about the gathering he had with the other members of the big seven. He was still pondering whether he had really approached Adam because of his instincts, or because of the ulterior motives of bringing him into his faction. But then again when he approached Adam, Adam was still a rank 2. And then there was Tokito, Why he was hiding the fact that he was a noble was beyond Owen. Sure the Hori clan was below the big seven, but they were secluded on earth, and they were left to be by the federation council. In short they were the closet faction in power to the big seven.

But Owen knew that Tokito knew that he knew that Tokito was from the Hori clan(Alright that was a mouthful). It was just that they put the talk away in understanding. "It doesn't matter" Owen shook his head. "At the end of the day, they're still my friends!" he muttered. Now that he thought about it, they had probably figured that he was acting weird this past few days, and were just giving him some time to sort himself out. He shook his head with a bitter smile, "I'm back baby" he muttered.

Meanwhile Adam got to his dorm and took a shower, before deciding to relax a bit. He turned on his holographic projector, and scrolled along for a some comedy skits. Now cadets in the academy could watch TV, but the only thing not possible, is contacting the outside world. And since Adam still had roughly about an hour and 45 minutes, before he has to go meet up with aurora. So why not relax a little during that time.

Sometime later, Adam stood up and got ready to go to Aurora's. Then he made his way to the office. But there was something wrong, the lobby was crowded with cadets. He had to push and push, to even reach her door. -"What, who is this punk?!" asked a cadet after Adam pushed him. -"Don't you see we were here before you?!" another protested. But their protest fell to deaf ears as he finally reached the door. "Come in" her voice came from behind the door. As soon as Adam entered the office, "Save your greetings!" Aurora said blankly.

"What?!" Adam blinked confused. "It's time you finally do the job I've been paying you for!" It was then that realization dawned on Adam. The crowd, her secretary. "Take this!" she said as the tablet in her hand disappeared and appeared in his hand. "You'll be the one doing the registry. "But..." Adam started, but he had no words to refute her, she had been paying and training him for weeks after all without him doing nothing. "I understand!" Adam nodded.

Meanwhile outside the office after Adam entered. -"Are my eyes deceiving me or did that punk just enter lady Aurora's office?!" said a cadet. -"If that's the case then both our eyes must be deceiving us" another muttered. "That bastard, we were here long before him, and he just came and went ahead us!" said another. "Don't worry, from his aura, he's just a

one starred rank 3. Let him come out, I'll show him his place" another cadet scoffed.

Just as he said that, the door opened, and Adam came out. Without wasting a breath, Adam raised the tablet in his hand, "Lady Aurora has authorized me to register the groups!" he announced. *Silence* The entire lobby went silent, even those that said they would teach Adam a lesson. That was until one suddenly broke the silence, "And why should we believe you?!" shouted a cadet. "Simple, why don't you go in there and ask her yourself?!" Adam shrugged gesturing to the door.

"This..." the cadet started but was out of words. "Thought so!" Adam smiled smugly which only seemed to incense the cadet more, but Adam didn't care about that, and instead shouted "Everybody on a line" as he went inside the secretary cabin in the lobby. Even though the cadets were still grumbling, they still did as Adam said. "Man who knew political power could be so entertaining!" Adam mused as he sat down. Mind you most of cadets that were coming to register were either in the normal or elite class. Adam didn't see a single cadet from the special class... yet.
