Chapter 103

The cavern had finally fallen silent. 

No rumbling growls. No musical mushrooms. No chorus of fungus-humming zombie beasts. Just silence. It felt unnatural after all the chaos like the world had forgotten how to breathe. Even the mushrooms seemed stunned, pulsing faintly like they were recovering from the world's worst rock concert.

Mernia, naturally, had no concept of 'winding down.' She was already knee-deep in bear guts, poking the squishy remains of the giant zombie-fungus bear with a long glass rod. Her brows were furrowed as she studied the spores. 

"Hmm," she muttered, scribbling notes. "Spores reacting to trauma. I wonder if ambient disappointment is depressing their density threshold."

I did not ask what that meant.

Torrent handed me a scrap of cloth, which I used to wipe the thick slime off my face. It didn't help much. I looked like I'd been head-butted by a sentient swamp and then painted abstractly by a raccoon.
