"Selene, are you there?" Nikolas's voice breathed through the phone, low and urgent.
Her breath caught. Her tongue was too tangled up to speak. If Nikolas had somehow found out the truth, then there was no point in hiding anymore. She would just have to come clean and then they would figure things out from there.
"I… I didn't mean to hide him," she finally whispered, forcing her voice out. "It's just that—"
"Selene, it's fine," Nikolas cut in.
She blinked,pulling her eyebrows together.
What?
"I don't understand," she said, confusion creeping into her voice. Why wasn't he angry? Why wasn't he yelling at her or calling her a liar the way he did with his mother and Mr. Smith?
"I get it," he said. "I understand that you would not want to introduce your son to a stranger just like that."
What the hell was he talking about?
Selene's heart thumped erratically.
Why did it feel like,he wasn't talking about the same thing she was thinking about.
