"They're really mad, Alpha Zephyr," Chief Draven said, his voice grave.
"I'd be surprised if they weren't," Zephyr agreed, a muscle ticking in his jaw. It was true. What River Pack member wouldn't be furious about the news? Even Chief Draven, who usually stood by Zephyr, looked deeply troubled.
"I'm ready for the challenge as soon as possible. The Chiefs can pick a date for the challenge." Zephyr stated, his voice firm.
Chief Draven rose. Instead of his usual handshake, he gave a curt, polite nod and exited the room. Zephyr returned the nod, watching the older man leave. Like so many others, Chief Draven had lost a great deal in the dark war. His wife had even succumbed to its lingering effects just a few years ago. Zephyr respected him for still giving him the benefit of the doubt; he was the only Chief still clearly on his side. The others were either openly against him or teetering on the fence.
