Chapter 76 - A Test of Skill and Shadows

"Excellent. Now, Midshipman, how did you disappear from the Granger residence if it wasn't magic?" asked the Commander. "Do you have a thermal imaging device, sir?" Evan asked. "I can get one here in a few minutes. In the meantime, no sidetracking." The Commander replied, going to the door to order the device. "Sir, I've been training a specific and secluded type of martial art since August. When I say secluded, I mean that even among the students of this martial art, only a select few are chosen for some of the most advanced techniques. My Sensei told me that I exhibited a …."gift for the craft". He knew initially I was training for military service, and I put many, many hours training, so I might be more on par with others when it came to hand-to-hand combat. When I started leave a few days ago, I went to him for additional training. He somehow knew something was coming my way. He taught me just two or three techniques that day, techniques that, had I not known them would have resulted in me and the Grangers dying that very night – December 20th. Just four days ago." Evan explained. "You mean to say that you have had this training for only a few months?" asked the Commander. "Well sir, one technique he taught me from back in August. The other technique, which I also used four days ago as well as yesterday, I learnt …four days ago. I am not at liberty to tell you the techniques, but I believe I can demonstrate some of it." Evan continued. "This Sensei, was he the other person with you yesterday evening?" asked the Commander. "As I answered last time, sir, that person requested to stay anonymous. If it is critical that you know, I will ask them permission to identify them to you, otherwise they really would prefer to remain anonymous." Evan replied. "Now, how about I demonstrate the first technique for you. Commander, you are proficient in knife throwing are you not?" asked Even. "I better be – I am the Commander of CTCRM. " he responded. "I noticed a letter opener on the table there. I am going to sit facing the wall with my eyes closed. When you are ready, throw the knife at me. And sir, please aim to hit, otherwise I might not move and the demonstration won't be as informative." Evan said. Evan moved to the end of the room and kneeled down on the floor with his back to the Commander. His eyes closed. The Commander picked up the letter opener, waited a few seconds, and then swiftly threw the knife at a point between the Midshipman's shoulder blades, only missed.

The General and PM were watching from the side, the PM quite nervous. He really did not need an injured Midshipman, especially as a result of a demonstration. His nervousness was replaced with astonishment, and he wasn't the only one. The Midshipman had begun to roll out of the way just as the Commander moved in preparing to throw the letter opener, and followed that up by catching the letter opener in his hand. The Midshipman then asked if they had a wooden board, four playing cards or index cards, and another three letter openers. The Commander, partly in shock still, moved to the door to request the items. A few moments later, the materials, along with the thermal imaging device were delivered. Evan asked the Commander to pin the four cards anywhere he wanted onto the board. He went into the adjacent bathroom and took a towel. Evan then lifted the board onto the ledge at thebottom of the Whiteboard. Blindfolding himself, he took the four letter openers and asked the Commander, General, and PM to focus on the board. Evan then waited a few seconds. "Mr. Prime Minister, I need you to focus on the board please." He stated. The PM complied. Evan then quickly turned around throwing the four letter openers at the board one after the other, quickly. Each one stuck the middle of one card each. Evan then removed his blindfold.

"Sirs, for this last demonstration, I would ask that you keep it amongst yourselves. It is not magic, at least not in the sense you know. As I mentioned, it is a technique taught only to select few, and known only to a select few. I have my Sensei's permission to show you this, but only if you promise to keep it secret amongst yourselves. Do I have your agreement?" Evan asked. The PM was amazed at the audacity of the Midshipman to make this request, however, in the interest of seeing it, he complied, as they all did. "Sir. I am going to sit in this chair. If you would turn on the thermal imaging monitor and point it at my location. You will see me disappear. When that happens, throw a crumpled piece of paper at this chair" Evan explained. As he sat there, he envoked kuji-kiri, going from Rin to Pyo, to Toh. The hairs on their skin stood up a bit. Evan then internally ran through the mantras for Jin and Zen. At that point, he appeared to disappear, at least from their visual sense. The thermal imaging device still recorded him as being in the seat. A second later, the thermal imaging monitor showed nothing there! The General scrunched up a piece of paper and threw it at the chair – it bounced off something that could not be seen. There wasn't even a shadow! And then, the Midshipman reappeared.

The General just had to ask. "Midshipman, why are you at CTCRM? I've seen what you did to those 20 Death Eaters at Miss Granger's residence. I see this. Why are you at CTCRM?" "Sir, I'm only 18. I want to defend my country. I can only do that as a soldier. The recruiter offered various branches of the military and the one that called to me was the Royal Marines, Sir. That is where I want to be. This…..this is what I learned over the past four months, preparing for the Royal Marines, Sir. I did not know it coming in to the Marines, however I practice every morning and every evening, three to four hours every day. Let's call this icing on the cake. What I did with those 20 Death Eaters, Sir, was a combination of all that I learned – from the martial arts, to the training I got from CTCRM. What I learn at CTCRM complements what I learn from Sensei, and visa versa" Evan replied. "All right, Midshipman. I believe we've taken up enough of your time. We appreciate you coming in, despite being on leave." Said the PM. "Thank you Sir." Evan replied. He saluted the Commander, the General and the PM. Then left.
