Sophia sat frozen in her seat. She couldn't move at all. Her hand, which had just been lifting her bag hung mid-air, fingers trembling so slightly that it went unnoticed by everyone... everyone but Aiden.
Her heart was beating so fast that it felt like it would leap right out of her chest. The words "Tomorrow is Aneira's court session. Her case has been reopened." echoed in her ears like a cruel chant.
No. No. No. This can't be happening…
She blinked, trying to mask the storm behind her eyes. She licked her lips, her voice catching in her throat as she finally managed to say, "Re-reopened? How? Why?"
Her voice cracked slightly.
Haisley, unaware of the tension forming inside Sophia, answered plainly. "Evidence came up. Strong ones. It turns out Aneira was implicated by someone in her department, and Mr. Philip, I don't know if you know him, he confessed. The court accepted to re-examine the case. Jaxton made it possible."
Sophia's throat went dry.
