As Gram and Gramps tell it, their first day running the Wendigo Inn in the late 1960s did not go smoothly. But first, a little background.

Gramps has at least three weeks of instructions and coaching from his parents, my great-grandparents. Heimdall "Hal" and Eunice Thomas shock college-age James by saying he is not going to re-enlist in the Army because he has to take over the family business in the Central Valley.
James, who has been stripping his rifle and then putting it back together, thinks his parents are being ridiculous. Sure, the Vietnam War isn't exactly popular, but James always had a desire to be part of something bigger. Besides, his parents don't HAVE a business in the Central Valley that he knows of, so what's the deal?
James' mind is not exactly on his parents' bizarre wishes, but on the girl he plans to marry, Adella. He has the ring burning a hole in his shirt pocket. He wants to get married before he is deployed again.
