Chapter 12 - Queen Karena

In a dimly lit room, silent reigned, only the crackling of the fire in the hearth the only sound heard. A tall figure stood by the window, gazing into the distant view.

Another figure loomed behind him, his foot moving across the soft crimson rug placed on the wooden floor, adding a certain charm to the room.

His fingers slowly glided across different furnitures, as if savouring their feels on his hands, it moved from the flower vase to the chair to the desk to the wooden stand to the shelves and across the books.

Then he walked and stood beside the figure in front of the window, overlooking the terrain. A peaceful silence reigned between them for sometime, both deep in their thoughts, then Darren, the one who was walking about broke the silence.

"Ciaran, what do you think of the current situation?"

He asked his friend.

Ciaran remained silent, time stretched on, and when it seemed as if he wouldn't speak, he replied.

"It's just the begining, he thinks his little witches can stop me, he's dreaming.

I let him off for too long and he has forgotten his place, below my feet "

Ciaran spat in a serious tone, though his face was unreadable, one couldn't miss the venom and hatred with a hint of amusement when he spoke those words.

"Good, thanks to your mother things have become easier.

Though I'm sure you would've carried out your plan even without the kingdom of Kardin.

But to avoid too much chaos, it's better we don't bring the underworld into this, otherwise we might have to thank your father too"

Darren said half seriously, half tauntingly.

Something shone in Ciaran's eyes, a fleeting darkness.

Then he said with a warning tone

"Watch it"

But it didn't faze his friend, it even made his grin widen as if he had accomplished his goals.

"Now, let's watch as they dig their own graves"

He said and gave a small chuckle filled with amusement.

Ciaran was the son of the late Empress of the Kingdom of Varre and former princess of the kingdom of Kardin located at the north of the continent. Queen Karena was known for her wisdom and wits, she was the most respected and powerful empress of her generation, feared and revered by many.

She was known for her beauty and strength, both physically and mentally.

As a young princess she already achieved what others her age could only dream of.

Even though she was an illegitimate princess, she was loved by her father the former emperor of the kingdom of Kardin.

She always rejected all the suitors that came for her hand in marriage, not seeing potential in them and not taking a liking to any of them.

Then king Magnus Vernon crown prince of Varre as of then came and charmed her with his wits and determination.

She fell for him, unaware that the decision will be the beginning of her downfall.

At that time, there were suspicions about Queen Karena's mother, saying she was strange. Whispers of speculations but all of that was now old news and rumours.

Some said she was a witch, some said she grew up homeless on the streets so she had some strange attitude, some said she was sick, some said she was possessed.

But all those were just speculations that died over time, everyone forgetting after there was no one to confirm or deny the rumours.

But the truth was that Karena's mother was a Valkyrie.

Yes, a supernatural with superhuman strength and speed, fast healing ability and ability to wield weapons naturally and see visions of death and mishap, she could also access different realms.

She was a fire Valkyrie that knew how to wield fire.

But that ability wasn't passed down to her daughter, Queen Karena.

But she wasn't less formidable even as a half human, this was a secret that only her father knew.

Even after she got married, her husband had no idea who she really was.

The she gave birth to Ciaran and he inherited her mother's fire ability.

Now only him holds this legacy and this power.

Even though Ciaran was born under special circumstances and wasn't the son of the king, she showered him with as much love as she could give before she passed away, leaving him alone in this wicked world.

Ciaran gazed out the window until a blanket of darkness was falling over the earth, Darren still by himself, a silent form of support and reassurance that he wasn't alone.
