What excuse could she possibly use now to convince herself to keep trusting him?
At this moment, Aurelia felt fear, an unsettling kind of fear, because she never imagined Arthur Baker—the Arthur she knew—would do something like this.
She looked flustered and shaken, then quickly stammered, "I… I've got something to do, I'll head off first."
She hurried past him.
"Aurelia!"
He called out to her, and Aurelia Wood's steps froze, though her heart tightened even further.
Her palms were clammy with cold sweat. She turned around, pretending to be calm as she looked at him and forced a smile. "What's wrong?"
Arthur furrowed his brow. "About earlier, that was my fault. Is your hand okay?"
Hearing his warm and caring inquiry made Aurelia's heart soften slightly.
She curved her lips into a faint smile. "I'm fine."
As she spoke, she raised her hand a little. "See? Nothing's wrong."
