The gangs have always only fought for their own survival; there's no doubt about it.
Underworld, bandits, pirates, smugglers, drug cartels, human trafficking rings, arms organizations—regardless of the initial reasons and goals for their founding, or whether during their development, some idealistic individuals chant virtues like "loyalty" and "chivalry." Those who survive after being educated and eliminated by harsh and bloody reality are always the pragmatic animals guided by realist principles.
Never believe in any notion of patriotic gangs. Gang members only love their own gang and leader, and the money and benefits they can get their hands on. Beyond that, they care about nothing. Talking to them about duties to the nation or people is like playing music to a bull, mere nonsense. Asking them to fight for something they neither understand nor care to understand is sheer lunacy that requires correcting with fists and batons.
