Chapter 1 - 1

We're too late! Tony, pull back!" Steve's voice commanded through the thick, blackened smoke Tony weaved between pushing beyond his limit knowing that time was of the essence. With a fraction of a second to spare, Tony dipped down narrowly avoiding the blast to his right followed by the rumbling explosion to his left. Its boom caused Tony to move with an unsteady zip, circling around the burning tower of the high-rise building knowing that everything was riding on his ability to seize the opportunity to save the day.

"I'm almost in," Tony's vibrating voice announced confident in their plan of attack, "If I can just…"

"Stark!" Steve shouted again—this time far less cordial and more concerned than the last order he'd delivered his teammate, "Pull back!!! You aren't going to make it out of there in one piece! It's too late."

"I'll be fine. Piece of cake," Tony ignored his teammate's warning instead targeting in on the terrorist leading the attack from the far end of the building. Seeing the oversized monster of the man perched upon the corner of the tower, Tony focused on his target, homing in on him directly before shooting his blasts to connect with the would-be assassin's chest. With a rush of adrenaline, he hit his mark, charging towards the enemy full force as he'd finally found his rhythm in bringing Steve's plan into motion, "Got you, you son of a bitch!"

"The foundation of the building is collapsing. One more blast and we're all going down," Steve attempted to warn Tony against his instinct, but he knew the risk. Along with JARVIS he'd measured the calculations needed to end this once and for all. It was their final moment of triumph leading the world back to the peace that had been stolen from them in the last few months of terror that their new enemy had reigned down upon the world.

"Not today we aren't," Tony argued swerving out of the way of another enemy blast. Pushing upward, he redirected his blaster effectively taking down another enemy grunt in the process. "Yes!"

"Tony…" Steve's words held a cautionary tone.

"Two down Cap. Three more to go," Tony boasted when he could hear the sound of the others in the distance, "We've got this."

"I hope you're right about this," Steve finally surrendered to Tony's declaration ordering the rest of the team to heed caution in running to action against the enemy contained within the walls of the tower, "We need to get the civilians out of the area before the building goes down and…"

"You take the team and deal with evacuation. This son of a bitch is mine," Tony decided making his way through the sky zipping forward towards the penthouse palace where his new foe had shacked up for the last few weeks working up the courage to implement his master plan that the team had effectively cut down a short while earlier. Now was about bringing him in and seeing to it that the narcissistic bastard faced justice for his crimes against humanity.

"Stark, you can't make this personal," Steve's voice was crackling in and out of his receiver. It was turning to static when another loud popping sound blistered the sky revealing long, red lines of heat spilling throughout the clouds. With a violent, roaring force they were ripping apart the sky when it was clear that the enemy within the walls of the tower was making his last stand.

"It's already beyond personal," Tony's jaw flexed with anger, his mind filled with purpose as he struggled to keep his rage from besting him after the coward within the tower had damn near destroyed half the city in his quest for world dominance, "He's not going to take our city from us."

"We're running out of time!" Natasha's voice interjected from her positioning on street level, "If we don't shut this down soon, then the whole city is going to implode from within."

"Clint, how are we doing from above?" Steve's questioning voice sounded out for a roll call, to check if the team was in position as Tony pushed on, ready to deliver the final blow to the bad guy who'd saw fit to ruining his night at the Met Gala with his latest temper tantrum that ran rampant in the city. Fear and panic had filled the streets, sending the world into turmoil, but now as the hot beams tore into the sky, Tony knew full well that this was the beginning of the end.

"We're going to have to move soon," Clint answered with steely cool resolve not allowing the twist of the tide to take down his confidence in his role, "I see three more snipers on the penthouse level and…"

"We've got to shut that machine down," Natasha reminded them with an impatient breath, "The longer we sit and talk about this, the more time we're wasting."
