In a small alleyway, a figure looked over her shoulder, she was an elf. Blonde to near silver hair and exotic blue eyes, wearing a deep cloak of earthy reds. She walked steadily, turning to look ahead and at the upcoming street the alley opened up to.
Soon, she was in the street, walking amongst the crowd and looking as unassuming as anyone during this time of day. She saw someone familiar to her and quickly walked far to the side, avoiding this person entirely, who was walking ahead with a glower and mumbling to himself.
Soon, another alleyway opened up and the elf girl walked into it. Finding a dark spot that obscured her from curious eyes looking in. Someone else emerged from the spot, a bearded dwarf, pudgy and looking like he drank a cask given how red his face was and how unsteady he walked.
Soon, he entered another street and walked down it for sometime, looking around drunkenly for anyone he recognized now.
After a while, he finally found an alleyway he was familiar with and did his best to get there quickly, trying to keep his drunken gate all the way. Given the loud murmuring from the crowd around him, he succeeded.
Once he was in the alley and a fair ways down it, he turned a corner and was completely out of sight of the street. He lost his drunken step and began to walk normally, only to curse when his gut scratched alongside some detritus off to the side.
"That's enough of this," he said, his voice suddenly changing notes to sound more feminine, "I should be safe by now. No one hardly comes this far from that place. Your wound is mine. My wound is mine. Echoing message of midnight. "
In an array of motes of light, Lili dropped her disguise by her spoken chant. Coming out as her true pallum self once her magic had ended. She gave one last cautious look behind her and above her, in case any would-be seekers decided to make the neighboring buildings a good vantage point. When it became clear that no one had followed her and no one was around her, she moved down the alley, entering the ruins area of the city.
Lili breathed deeply as she walked the path to Hestia familia's home. It wasn't just a physical exhaustion that affected her but a mental one as well, or a magic one if you will.
She'd been using her magic, Cinder Ella, off and on too rapidly for her liking. Since leaving her home in fact. Despite the headache and exhaustion, she definitely felt confident in her choice of using her magic to get herself here.
Given how her familia were scrambling about en masse and how she was on shaking footing with them as is, it was best she avoid them for the time being. All the more given how her captain was shouting orders at everyone to look for someone with a gift from a God in Heaven.
A perverted one at that! With whom they said the gift came from.
Lili sighed as she walked on, coming across a familiar trail through old rubble. Walking along it, she soon caught sight of the old church, recently renovated, of Hestia familia.
She suddenly stopped and stared and the large grey blocky extension jutting from the side of the former church. Taking in the…protrusion that was attached to the home.
Hestia clearly had more work done to her home…and she clearly got the raw end of the deal.
Lili shook her head and continued on, no time to be distracted, she had an important meeting to attend.
Reaching the door, she knocked on it several times and waited. Soon the door opened and Lili was met with an attractive blonde wearing a dark colored maid attire. Lili almost took a step back in surprise. When had Hestia familia employed a maid?
"Miss Arde, correct?" the maid asked. Lili had enough sense of mind to nod and quickly shook off her surprise, the maid in turn bowed to her, "I am Kirumi Tojo. Maid of the Hestia familia. I understand that you're here to go over the plan of venturing down to the eighteenth floor?"
Lili nodded, she was still trying to get her bearings when Kirumi stepped to the side and gestured for her to come in. Lili did so and was further shocked at seeing the inside of the Hestia familia home.
"How did Goddess Hestia afford this place in just two months?!" Lili exclaimed, her surprise palpable.
Kirumi shut the door and walked beside the short pallum, "To my knowledge," she began, "it was thanks to the careful savings of the familia itself as well as planning ahead thanks to the Goddess herself," she dipped her head, as if in apology, "forgive me, I am relatively new to this familia. I don't have exact details on some things, merely answers."
"You're part of the familia?" Lili asked, surprised again, "not hired by it?"
Kirumi smiled slightly, "No, I am not," she answered, "I too, like many others, came to this city with intentions of making a different life for myself. Not as an adventurer or a supporter but as a maid," she gestured Lili onward and continued, "after some trials, I found myself in the gratifying service of Hestia familia. Who welcomed me with open arms," they arrived at the living room and Lili sat on one of the couches, giving a slight moan at the comfortable feeling of the cushions, "though I have only arrived a few days ago, I ask that you forgive me for any faults you may find in my services," she bowed again, deeper this time, "would you like any refreshments as you wait for Lady Shuuyu? Perhaps some snacks?"
Lili felt awkward in this situation. Normally, she'd be the one who took orders. Granted that happened far less thanks to partnering up with Master Bell and the others, which she was glad for. Still, old instincts nawed at her.
She soon adapted though, "I'll take some coffee if you have any. Two sugars."
Kirumi nodded, "It shall be done," she said, "please wait here until lady Shuuyu arrives. She is in the bathroom right now and is hopefully soon to return."
Lili nodded in thanks and sunk deeper into the comfortable couch, her worries and stress melting away.
Koukin Shuuyu was a pragmatic woman. Always one that saw the bigger picture in front of her. Any potential threat that was in front of her was analyzed and studied for exploitation or weakness. Any struggle that awaited her was overcome by careful planning and precise action. These were the traits she honed alongside her mind, each in tandem. So that she was never caught unaware.
That's what she was in her old world…this one however…
"Sheren," Koukin moaned, her voice edged with pleasure and frustration, "we have to stop. I have a meeting to prepare for."
'Sheren' or Hakufu, just smiled and continued to press her nude body against Koukin's back, her hand wrapped around and gently caressing Koukin's chest, the fingers squeezing the ample orbs and tickling the sensitive nubs on them with practice and joyous technique.
"Come now, Meirin," she said in a husky whisper, the heat of her words nearly as hot as the shower they were under, "just one more. I promise I won't ask again."
Koukin would sigh at her lover's words but moaned instead when her breasts were squeezed so tenderly, "Y-you said that last time," she said through clenched teeth, ecstasy arching up her spine, "and the other two times before that. I'm afraid I have to put my foot down this time," she tried to sound stern, but her breathy voice gave away her pleasure. Which was only enhanced when Hakufu pressed her curvy body closer to her, letting Koukin feel her curves in intimate detail.
"Fine," Hakufu said, with some reluctance but mostly amusement, moving off of Koukin, "I guess I've done my duty today in any case."
Koukin ran her fingers through her hair, getting the last vestiges of soap out of it. She was taking a nice shower when Hakufu came in abruptly and announced she would help Koukin with her bathing. That was thirty minutes ago, needless to say, Hakufu was very enthusiastic with her 'help'.
And dammit all did Koukin not enjoy every second of it!
Turning off the shower, Koukin left the stall and picked up her towel, drying herself thoroughly, "Wait until after the meeting with Miss Arde, we can continue this in a more comfortable setting," she ended with a smile, looking back at her still soaking wet lover.
Hakufu made a thoughtful look, tapping a finger contemplatively at her chin, "I guess if I have to," she said, "but if the meeting turns steamy, expect me to jump in," she ended with a smile and a proud puff of her chest that made it bounce enticingly. She acted like it was an inevitable fact that was to happen.
Koukin knew better though and sighed at her lover's promiscuity, "This isn't our old world, Sheren. It's especially not our old country," she paused in thought, recalling a distant memory, "and that never happened in any case. That was just one of your fantasies you wished would happen."
Hakufu laughed and walked out of the stall herself, grabbing her towel and drying herself off, far more haphazardly than Koukin, "Oh sweet Meirin," she began, toweling her breasts, "in case you forgot, that did happen," she rubbed the towel furiously through her hair, her head popping out of it with a toothy grin, "just not to us."
Koukin made to reply but paused, recalling when something similar to what Hakufu said actually happened. She inadvertently shivered at the memory.
"That poor merchant," she said, her voice somber, "your mother showed him no mercy that night."
"In her defense," Hakufu said, beginning to put her wardrobe on, "he was young and charismatic enough to impress her," she suddenly looked to the side awkwardly but with undisguised amusement, "she was able to secure the deal that gave us some nice new arms for our army."
"After the merchant begged for her to stop," Koukin deadpanned, securing her chest area of her clothing, "and after we gave him water, food, and wine to recover from the experience."
Hakufu laughed, recalling the aftermath well now, "Hahaha! Yeah! Renfa gave mother the lecture of a lifetime. One of the few times I've seen mother be so sheepish," she finished securing her clothes in place and gave a hop to make sure everything was set and secured, "though I really can't say a lesson was learned."
Koukin smiled, recalling the moment before suddenly feeling a wave of regret at the mention of Renfa, "Yes," she began, "Chuubou certainly let Lady Bundai know how crude her actions were, for all the good that did. She even had to finalize the negotiations after he recovered from the trauma and wouldn't face Lady Bundai out of fear for his health."
Hakufu lost her smile and turned to look at Koukin, whose gaze was pointed down and her smile remorseful. She approached her once strategist, now vice-captain, and still lover and gave her a hug from behind. Not grabbing anywhere inappropriate, this was a comforting hug, born of affection and long suffering.
"You should call her by her familiar name," Hakufu said, "you know you can."
"After all I've done?" Koukin asked, her tone flat, "I shouldn't even call her Chuubou. I shouldn't call her anything familial or friendly," she sighed, realizing something else, "she definitely shouldn't call me anything…besides an insult."
Hakufu sighed and moved her head to rest on Koukin's shoulder, "You know she wouldn't and besides," she said, "that was just one life you had. Out of how many you can remember? I recall a few that you lived quite comfortably alongside her. A few of which we 'all' lived quite comfortably together."
Koukin nodded, "That is true but…" she struggled for a moment, "but that time definitely stood out amongst the others. What I did to her and our kingdom," she turned her head slightly to look at Hakufu, "the twisted reason I did it…who I did it for," she brought a hand up and wrapped her fingers around Hakufu's, who returned the action, "how diluted I was that I risked the safety of our loved ones and our kingdom for my vow."
"Yeah," Hakufu agreed, "sounds pretty stupid," her words made Koukin twitch and Hakufu saw her lover's face go down again, "I don't know much about that life, since I, you know," she shrugged, "died before all of that happened. But what I do know is that Renfa wouldn't hold it against you, especially in this new world. She'd want to start over with you," she smiled and squeezed Koukin's hand, "if it's even necessary in the first place. Again, you and her lived far more good lives together than bad. She would definitely focus on the good."
Koukin actually gave a genuine laugh at that, "She would indeed," she said, "a fault I reminded her of often."
"And one she kept with her," Hakufu said, "that turned into a strength that carried her and the others to victory."
Koukin didn't reply to that. It was difficult to reply when it came to talking about 'that' life. Mainly because, though she knew some of what happened in that life, there were still some things that stuck with her more than others then just the aftermath.
Like how she died by her own hand, in smoke and flame.
She didn't like dwelling on that, even less when thinking about her fervent loyalty that cost her so much and ended up doing more harm than good. Out of all the lives she somehow remembered, that one was the most memorable. Given the weight of shame it carried.
Hakufu definitely could tell where her lover's mind was and promptly decided to cheer her up and get her back on positive feet.
Releasing Koukin from her hug, Hakufu did the one thing she thought would help.
By slapping Koukin's ass, hard.
The sharp sound and sudden yelp echoed in the bathing room and Hakufu grinned as she saw Koukin jump in the air after her sudden strike, both hands on the ass cheek she slapped without warning.
Koukin had a few tears in the corners of her eyes as she glared at the pink haired 'little conqueror', "What the hell, Sheren!" she exclaimed, "where did that come from?!"
"In the past!" Hakufu answered proudly, hands on hips, "So let's leave it at that!"
Koukin stared at her childhood friend turned lover and rubbed at her sore ass cheek some more, "Hard to do that when it hurts so much."
Hakufu moved to Koukin's side and draped an arm over her shoulder, "Yep!" she agreed, "It hurts sometimes but it shouldn't hurt for long. That's why we leave it behind when all is said and done," her smile turned more encouraging, "and why we build a better future from such pain, so we don't have to go through it again."
Koukin stared at Hakufu for a moment, speechless. She caught onto the meaning of the words and frowned, this time not in sadness or shame but contemplatively, like she did when she strategized, "You think it's actually possible," she asked, "you think she would really forgive me so easily?"
Hakufu pecked Koukin on her forehead before going to a bench and picking up the strategist's glasses, "Only if you forgive yourself first," she said, "like I told you, you and her had more happy lives together. One bad one shouldn't ruin all of that. It's a new world, a new life. For yourself and maybe her if she is summoned, make the most of it."
Koukin found herself speechless at those words. Really, what could she say? Hakufu was right. One of the most bloodthirsty warriors she had ever known dropped wisdom upon her when it was most needed.
She blinked when she felt something come over her eyes, realizing with clarity that Hakufu put her glasses on. She smiled again, one that was returned.
"Feel better?" she asked.
Koukin nodded, "Yes. Thank you."
"Great!" Hakufu said with a jump in her step, "You're more beautiful with a smile on your face."
Koukin blushed at the compliment. Damn this wonderful woman, she knew just the right words to say.
Koukin coughed, putting on an air of calmness, "We've spent enough time here," she said, "let's go and meet Miss Arde. We have much to talk about."
Hakufu saluted, a more mischievous smile on her face now, "Yes, vice-captain!"
Koukin suddenly felt embarrassed and awkward, blushing as a result, "I…still need to get used to that," she made her way to the entrance.
"What? Still find it weird that you're my dashing superior and I you're demure subordinate?"
"Yes…and out of anything I would call you, demure is definitely not one of them."
"Oh? What else would you call me. Sexy? Busty? Cute? Charismatic? Brave? Cunning? Crafty? Maybe a little crazy?"
"Troublesome."
"Ooof! Point to you there."
"That's a compliment…I love troublesome people. It makes them fun to figure out and enjoy."
"…now I'm blushing."
"And that makes two points for me."
Lili was in for a surprise in this meeting.
Namely, meeting some of Hestia familia's new members.
She had heard from Bell and a few others in their party that they did receive new recruits but she hadn't had the chance to meet any of them until today. Koukin explained that it was so they could get them used to not only the dungeon but also the city as well. So they kept their new members in small parties with those that had been in the familia for a while, letting them be taught the basics of the dungeon and the city.
Lili had noticed a few times when she went into the dungeon with them that some of the party would be missing the next day, just to come back the following day. She guessed that it was whoever's turn that day to aid the new recruits.
Still…that does leave an obvious question.
"Are you sure about bringing them with us to the eighteenth floor?" Lili asked, looking at Koukin from across the coffee table. She was also keeping a close eye on this Hakufu woman, who was staring at Lili with mischievous and sultry eyes.
She'd seen those eyes before and she would not be in another pub situation if she could help it!
"I'm sure," replied Koukin, taking a sip of the tea provided by Kirumi, "despite their fresh arrival to our familia, most of them have significant combat training and experience and some have talents that make up for their lack of experience."
Lili was still doubtful and something on her face must have shown it, "Bell and I are not planning on taking our entire familia down," Koukin said, "plenty will be staying behind. Like Kirumi here, whose talents are better suited here than in the dungeon."
"Indeed," the maid replied, glancing at Lili, "though I am not unfamiliar with combat, my specialty and focus is to the care of the home."
Lili looked at the maid, it would be difficult for any normal person to spot but Lili could see, if ever so slightly, that Kirumi was definitely more than just a maid. She'd been around suspicious people enough to see the hidden details.
Besides…no normal maid could make a coffee that amazing!
"Alright," Lili said, turning her gaze to look at the person beside Koukin, "Is she coming along with us?"
Hakufu stared at Lili, cheeks in her palms and her elbows resting on her knees. Since she arrived alongside Koukin, she had not taken her eyes off Lili and it unnerved the pallum quite a bit. She had seen a gaze like that before. From a greatly inebriated strategist at a pub not too long ago.
Koukin looked at Hakufu and nudged her with an elbow, drawing a whine and a wince from her.
"Forgive Hakufu," Koukin said, "she is just…fascinated by you. There aren't any pallums where she and I came from."
Lili knew there was more behind that gaze than fascination. Since introducing herself to Lili, after Lili gawked at how scantily dressed she was like Koukin, she looked at her like she was a delicious meal to eat.
But Lili would be damned before she ended up on 'that' menu.
"You said you and her came from the same place?" Lili asked, hoping to take her mind off being eyed like a little snack, "Why didn't she come with you when you arrived?"
Koukin pushed her glasses up, "I'm afraid Hakufu couldn't join me at the time," she explained, "she was an important figure in our homeland and thus couldn't leave so easily."
"So I decided to shove my responsibilities on to someone else," continued Hakufu with a grin, crossing her arms under her large bust, much to Lili's envy, "it wasn't easy but I eventually found someone who could shoulder the responsibilities. After that, I came here as soon as I could," she tilted her body and leaned herself on Koukin's shoulder, drawing a wry look from the strategist, "soon, I found where my dear Meirin was and swiftly joined with the familia she was with!"
Lili stared at her for a moment, processing her words. She suddenly realized something and turned to look at Koukin with a deadpan stare, "She basically derelicted her duties and ran away, is that right?"
Hakufu tensed in surprise at the rather harsh frankness of the words. Who knew someone that small could have a bite that big?
Koukin chuckled, "Not an inaccurate way of putting things but it is more complicated than that. We both came to this city with dreams of our own and ambitions igniting our hearts. Our previous home didn't allow us to…explore new opportunities. When the time came that I could venture out, I took it, and thanks to Hestia familia, I now have an opportunity to see to my goals."
Lili was about to ask what those goals were but Koukin raised a hand, "I would love to share what my ambition is but it's too early for that," she said, "when the time comes I'll be more than happy to share it with you."
Hakufu rubbed her shoulder against Koukin's, "C'mon Meirin, at least throw me a bone," she whined, "I know I haven't been here long but even I don't know what your plan is."
Koukin looked into Hakufu's eyes and for a moment Lili thought she would say what it was. But she wrestled control and just replied, "I'm sorry Sheren but I'm still working on the broad strokes. Give me some more time and I'll be more than happy to share it with you as well."
Hakufu sighed and returned to her original seated position, a pout on her lips, "Fine," she said, "I know that you only tell us a plan when it's well and truly prepared. I can wait," she looked over at Koukin, a grin replacing the pout, "It'll be all the more worthwhile when I see what it is in any case."
Koukin smiled and nodded at her lover, grateful for the trust.
Lili finally decided to ask something, something that's been on her mind for a bit since this meeting started.
"Lili thought your name was Koukin, Miss Shuuyu," Lili began before looking at Hakufu, "but you call her Meirin and she calls you Sheren instead of Hakufu. Why is that?"
Koukin had anticipated this. Since Hakufu was summoned, she imagined it would only be a matter of time before someone asked about their naming of each other.
Thankfully that was one of the easiest things she could explain.
"Allow me to clarify," Koukin began, "let me be clear, our names are what they are but we also have another name that is more of a personal one," she reached down to her side and clasped Hakufu's hand in hers, "one that we share with those who are dear to us," she gently squeezed, an action that was returned, "it's an old eastern tradition, one that lives on here and there."
Lili hadn't heard of such a tradition. Then again she didn't know much about the far east or the outside world in general. Having spent practically her entire life in Orario.
Even still…something felt off.
She pushed the thought aside, there were more important things to focus on, "Lili thinks we're getting off track, let's talk about our plans in full and detail."
Koukin agreed and soon the conversation went to where it was meant to, the plan to get to the eighteenth floor.
Together, they went over the logistics of such a journey, a first time one for everyone in fact, with the exception of Lili. Discussing potion amounts needed, rations to bring, equipment that was necessary. Koukin was glad to hear from Lili that Welf was working hard on getting salamander wool cloaks ready as well as completing the weapon commissions her familia had requested.
Mildred was beside herself with the wooden bow she had. Nevermind the fact that she was absolutely potent with it.
Soon the topic drifted from preparing to what to expect and Koukin was surprised at what she heard from Lili.
"The value of valis is 'that' inflated?" Koukin asked in genuine surprise, getting a serious nod from Lili.
Hakufu whistled, "Damn, sounds like a rough hustle down there in that place," she paused, recalling the name of the eighteenth floor, "Rivira, was it?"
Lili nodded but decided to clarify, "Lili wouldn't call it a hustle. Not…completely anyway. The town just has a different economy altogether. Where monster stones are the value for any adventurers or merchants residing in that place."
"So," began Koukin, "that means we'd have to put aside a portion of our magic stones we collect when going down. If we are to buy any equipment or lodgings there that is."
Lili grimaced, "Lili definitely wouldn't recommend buying anything from there unless you were desperate. Magic stones are the primary currency but 'currency' is more of a loose concept than you think down there."
Koukin thought on those words but it was Hakufu that realized what the pallum was saying, "Oh! It's not set from place to place," she said, "one merchant could charge less or more depending on the stones we possessed, right?"
Lili nodded but shook a hand in a 'so-so' gesture, "That's right for the most part but it's far more fluid than that, obnoxiously so depending on quantity and rarity of the items down there."
Koukin nodded, "A place where opportunists can make their finances based on desperation and supply and demand in a hostile environment," she said, arching a brow at Lili, "I trust some of those wares are more exclusive than any here on the surface."
"Absolutely," Lili said, "Rivira has products that are outright banned by the Guild and in a few countries as well. Lili recommends staying clear of those. They are more trouble than they're worth and more expensive than Lili cares to imagine."
"Noted," Koukin said, "We ideally won't risk purchasing anything there at all," she heard a groan from her side and turned to see Hakufu pouting, "sorry my love but that includes you as well. We are still recovering our finances from the renovations and the equipment for our new members."
"I know," grumbled Hakufu, pouting while leaning against the couch, "but I'm curious what a town underground would have. It sounds exciting!"
"Lili would think it sounds expensive," the pallum said with a deadpan voice, "given how lucrative Lili just described it."
Hakufu just huffed a laugh, the action moving her chest and sparking envy in Lili once again, "You can't put a price on amusement!" the bold woman said.
"When that price is truly outrageous. Lili thinks you can."
"When you live in the moment, price isn't a factor!"
"It's definitely an inevitability!"
"Not with that attitude!"
"A mature one?"
"A whiny one."
"Lili doesn't whine!"
"You do when you poke holes in my fun."
"When Lili points out facts you mean!"
"I make my own facts!"
"You'll make trouble for us if you're going with us down there!"
Koukin watched in surprise as Lili battled Hakufu with words. She hadn't expected this outcome but looking closely, she could see amusement in the eyes of Hakufu as she argued with Lili.
Koukin sighed but found a smile making its way to her face. Typical Hakufu, finding entertainment wherever she could, even in an argument.
"This meeting has dissolved somewhat," a voice said from over her shoulder, Koukin looked and saw Kirumi standing behind the couch, a cup of hot tea on a tiny plate, "should you not direct them back to the main topic of discussion?"
Koukin took the proffered tea with a nod and drank slowly, enjoying the bitter warmth it provided. A spicy blend, nice.
"In a moment," she said, watching on as both Lili and Hakufu stood up and were now gesticulating at each other, "let's have them get this out of their system. Hakufu was getting stir crazy sitting around for too long and Miss Arde has been tense since she arrived. I think this will be a nice exercise for them."
Kirumi turned her attention back to the ridiculous argument, "If you say so, Miss Shuuyu," a thought suddenly came to her, "Miss Arde was rather tense when she arrived here, quite exhausted too."
Koukin sipped her tea before replying, "We are a considerable distance away from the Soma familia territory," she pointed out, " it is understandable that she would be considerably tired after such a long journey."
"But she is a supporter," Kirumi countered, "one that, by your own words, has had considerable experience in the dungeon. What is a long walk on the surface compared to that?"
Koukin paused mid-sip, the question startling her. Kirumi was right, why was Lili so exhausted when she could carry a large bag on her back that was three times her size and weight and manage to carry it up and down the twisting and turning halls of the dungeon.
Something was…off about that.
"You may be right," Koukin said, putting her tea down on the coffee table, "for now though, keep sharp and aware. We'll go over theories later if we can't ask them now."
Kirumi nodded and didn't say anything, returning to being the professional maid that she was. Right now wasn't the best time to speculate anything, there were still some things to go over in this meeting.
Koukin clapped her hands, "Alright you two. That's enough, let's move on with the planning."
Hakufu and Lili glared at each other before turning away with a huff and sitting back down. Lili glared at Hakufu who smiled back and leaned forward, pressing her arms together and emphasizing her generous cleavage.
Lili growled, that was a low blow. Using her curvy body to hit her where it hurts. Though Lili did try to press her own chess together to compete. She was actually pretty well endowed…for a pallum.
Koukin chopped a hand down on the side of Hakufu's head, making the pink haired woman give a cry and clutch at her head.
"Enough of that," Koukin said, "anymore from you, Sheren, and I'll have Kirumi hold off on your snacks and drink."
The threat hit home and Hakufu huffed again and crossed her arms, this time modestly. No way was she going to risk the loss of great snacks and good drink.
Koukin returned her focus to Lili, "Now that that's settled, how about we discuss party size and coordination?"
Lili nodded and asked, "How many will be going with us?"
Koukin thought for a moment, recalling the discussion with the others some time ago, "Are typical party, myself, Chitoge, Ibuki, Takeru, Arue, Kallen, and Elbia."
"Hana isn't going with us?" Lili asked, surprised. She thought that crazy artist would jump at exploring new floors and see new sights.
"Not an easy decision," Koukin said, "but it was decided we would leave somewhat of a token force behind. If just to keep the Goddess company. She isn't the only one either."
"Indeed," Kirumi said, her voice surprising Lili. She had forgotten she was here it seemed, "I myself will too stay behind and take care of the home and its denizens. As a proper maid should."
Lili had no comment on that and just nodded before returning her attention to Koukin, "How about the other new recruits? How many of them are coming?"
"Certainly a few," Koukin said, turning her attention to the upper floors of the home, "I know our newest mages are certainly interested. One more scholarly and the other more supportive, they will be a great help when we go down."
Lili turned her attention up as well, staring at the balcony railing that led to the new rooms, "They're here?" she asked.
Koukin nodded, "Yes," she confirmed, "our newest members, Rin, Misato, and Miyuki are upstairs with Arue. Doing some mystical experiments in one of their rooms. Don't ask me what kind, I just know that Rin possesses a skill that lets her magic be more flexible than others I've seen," she paused, recalling something, "though Miyuki is probably working on her gadgets as well. She is apparently an engineer of some kind," she looked to Lili again, "she will also be accompanying us as a supporter, much like you. Though her reasons for coming are to get a more accurate read on the dungeon and its monsters so she can make better gear for us."
Lili nodded, understanding. She was also impressed that Hestia familia got an engineer in their ranks. She knew of a few and knew that they were seldom interested in dungeon diving. Most not even being a part of a familia and instead employed by the Guild.
"And the others?" Lili asked, "This 'Rin' and 'Misato' are the mages you mentioned?"
"Correct," Koukin confirmed, "they too will be part of the back row alongside Arue. Rin is far more offensive with her spells while Misato can use her healing and support magic to a great degree."
Lili nodded again, legitimately impressed by the find of another offensive mage and one that had support spells. A rare find for the latter.
"Our other new back row support is Mildred Lawrence," Koukin said, "a very capable archer."
"An archer?" Lili asked surprised, archers weren't exactly common in the dungeon. Sure there were those that used a bow but only rarely. Given the confines of the dungeon and its varied environments, being an archer was practically a dead profession in a place where a monster could close the distance by turning a corner.
"I see your worry," Koukin said, drawing Lili out of her thoughts, "you needn't be, Mildred is far more capable than you can imagine."
Lili's expression did not change and Hakufu decided to add what she knew, "It's like Meirin said, Mildred is practically a force all on her own with that bow," she laughed a bit, recalling seeing the blonde archer do her best not to break her wooden bow with the might of her draw, "I've seen her shoot and let me be honest, we were tempted to put her up with the vanguard. She's very good."
Lili…had never heard anyone say anything like that about an archer, baring maybe 'Nine Hells'.
"It's true," agreed Koukin, "I have heard of the risks being an archer has in the dungeon, especially in the enclosed areas, but Mildred has shown her skill with a bow and arrow far outpaces any potential risk."
Now Lili was genuinely curious about seeing this person in action. If someone like the usually stalwart Koukin could be impressed, then they must have considerable merit.
Lili moved her thoughts along with a force of will. There was still more to discuss.
"How about the others?" Lili asked, "Lili imagines there are more vanguard fighters like Master Bell and Mister Welf?"
Koukin nodded, "Yes indeed, Miss Arde," she said, "one is sitting beside me right now."
Hakufu smiled with purpose at Lili and she had to do her best not to jump in fright at such a smile. Lili had enough experience working with adventurers that though many went into the dungeon for riches and discovery…
There were also those that went down there just to fight and kill the creatures that existed below.
Seeing that savage and bloodthirsty smile directed at her told Lili that Hakufu definitely fell into the later category of adventurer. Which honestly surprised her, given just a moment ago Hakufu had a more civil but teasing air about her. Now that seemed to have disappeared like it never existed at all.
Suddenly, Hakufu returned to her more friendly expression, "I'll be one of the front fighters beside Bell and this Welf guy," she gave Lili a thumbs up, "if you're ever in trouble, give a shout and I'll have your back in no time."
Lili felt somewhat mollified by that. Still, she was going to watch Hakufu with a cautious eye when they were in the dungeon.
Paranoid? Maybe. Cautious? Absolutely.
Lili regained her focus and asked, "Any more?" she asked, referring to the rest of Hestia's new children.
Koukin continued, "We have another two. Olivier is another sword fighter and has experience in the military she served in."
That was a surprise, "Which military?" asked Lili.
Koukin shrugged, "She hasn't said. All I know is that it was one that specialized in winter warfare," she said, "I haven't gotten anymore out of her than that."
Lili was suspicious, "She could be a spy? One sent to gather intel on the city."
Koukin waved her concerns, "That too popped up in my mind but from what I could gather, Olivier left the military due to some…disagreements with the upper echelons."
"What kind of disagreements?"
"Something about some 'over bloated, stubborn, womanizing, overrated, and arrogant playboy' that got too big for his britches," Koukin explained, looking sheepish as she explained. She shrugged at Lili, "her words not mine."
Not entirely a lie as far as Koukin knew. When going over potential backstories for their new arrivals, they added a bit of truth to their lies. In Olivier's case, she didn't 'leave' the military but she did get as far away from the control of the government as she could. Not insubordinately but independently. Koukin had a feeling no one in her old world was going to tell her otherwise.
"Sounds…rough," Lili said.
"The reason? Or the woman?"
"…yes."
Koukin smiled but continued but the smile turned awkward, "The last one to help with the vanguard is…unique."
Lili immediately felt suspicious and worry in equal measure, "How unique?" she asked.
Koukin tried to find the right words, not helped by Hakufu snickering beside her. She eventually just sighed and tried to simplify it, "You know how Arue can be overdramatic on occasion?"
"Replace 'occasion' with 'often' and yes, Lili agrees," Lili said with a curious tilt of her head, "Why?"
"Black General is like that but…more," Koukin said.
Lili understood immediately and though she hadn't met this person yet, she could already feel a headache forming. Not to mention the name…
"Is that a nickname?" Lili asked.
"No, it's one she prefers to go by," said Koukin.
"Was she a general at all?"
"No…she did technically help lead an organization some time ago."
That was something, "What kind of organization?"
"One that seemed to focus on mischief and trouble here and there."
"Like what?"
"…She may have had a hand at running a poor pyramid scheme some time ago."
"…Seriously?"
"She actually ended up paying others the money she was trying to take."
"So a failed pyramid scheme?"
"…if it worked at all."
Lili groaned aloud. Not only was this person possibly more dramatic than Arue, but they were also troublesome in general to begin with.
"Can she fight well at least?" Lili asked rubbing at her temples.
"That is actually where she does her best in," Koukin said, "despite her…habits, Black General is an effective fighter as well and remarkably durable from what I've seen. She will be helpful to us in the dungeon…we just have to deal with her dramatics like we do with Arue just…harder."
Lili nodded, accepting that. Difficult though it may be. She should probably pack some headache medicine just to be safe.
Lili suddenly paused in thought and in action. This Black General was a woman. This Olivier was a woman. This Mildred was a woman. Rin, Misato, Miyuki were all women. Kirumi was a woman.
Bell was the only male in this familia.
That alone should have garnered outrage from the pallum supporter, causing her to wildly question why there were so many girls in this familia and why Bell was the only male? She would continue to question and grill the vice-captain about anything wild or perverse that may have happened to Bell.
She would do all of that in more by this stunning realization.
Were the situation also not a serious one thanks to what she'd seen lately.
She thought back to how her familia had behaved this last week. How earnest and stubborn her captain, Zanis, had been in finding someone specific.
Someone who had a very specific gift.
Lili could have let this go. She probably should have let this go but…
But it was important to know.
"Miss Shuuyu," Lili began, her tone neutral and professional but so abrupt a change that it surprised Koukin and Hakufu, "could I have a conversation with you alone?"
Koukin looked at Lili, staring into her eyes. She saw something in those chestnut colored orbs, an earnest curiosity that would not abate.
As well as a tinge of fear bleeding through.
"Anything you can say to Meirin, you can say to me," interjected Hakufu, not unkindly but firmly, "especially since this meeting hasn't really ended yet. We haven't even gotten any sweet snacks yet to finish this off."
"The almond cookies will be ready shortly," Kirumi said, "I ask you to be patient, Miss Sonsaku."
Koukin paid little attention to both Hakufu and Kirumi, her gaze still locked with Lili's, who was unwavering in her own eyes.
"Sheren," Koukin began, "can you go and check on our mages and engineer upstairs. They've been quiet for some time and I believe they're overdue for a checkup."
Hakufu stared at Koukin, her gaze one of questioning. It wasn't of doubt, far from it, the two knew each other in ways none in this world could possibly imagine. If there was a problem, the two would hardly need words to communicate it. Their trust ran that deep and farther.
Still…both would make sure the other was certain of whatever decision they made, good or bad, just so long as they were sure.
Koukin returned her stare, a soft smile on her face that eased Hakufu. She'd be fine, no need to worry.
There was nothing to worry about in any case. Koukin was a far more capable fighter in this world than in they're previous one. Her sickness was nonexistent in this new life of hers.
Hakufu looked at Lili, seeing the determination in those eyes. Whatever it was she wanted to talk about with Koukin, it was clearly important, possibly vital.
"Fine," Hakufu said, standing with a stretch. Arching her back and spreading her arms that was clearly meant to display her figure to admiring eyes. It worked as Koukin briefly looked over at her to enjoy the sight of the body that has rested with her these last few nights, "someone should check on that group anyway," she turned her gaze up to the balcony, "I don't trust magic too much, bad experience. Still, can't deny it's useful."
Saying that, she made her way upstairs, casually humming a tune that Lili hadn't ever heard.
"I too will depart," Kirumi said with a bow, "should you ladies need me, just give a call. I will answer."
Soon, Kirumi left for the kitchen. Likely to check on the snacks being prepared.
Now it was just Koukin and Lili. Both staring at each other from across the coffee table.
Both possessing calculating minds and both having wills as strong as iron. Lili's from hardship and abuse, Koukin's from ambition and desire.
Eventually a question came, "What is it you wish to discuss, Miss Arde?" Koukin asked.
Lili thought she could ask it there and then but some instinct told her to hold off on that. Instead, she decided on a different route, "Before Lili asks anything," she began, "do you mind if Lili tells you something instead."
Koukin sat there for a moment, considering. Eventually she nodded and gestured for Lili to continue.
Lili took a breath, no going back now, "Lili had a…difficult time coming here," she began, "Lili's familia is out and about more often than Lili has ever seen them and Lili thought it best to avoid them as much as possible given my past with some of them."
"Your abusers," Koukin said, listening, "are they seeking you out?"
Lili shook her head in the negative, "No, Lili doesn't think they've even left the headquarters since the Guild came down on them when you and everyone else busted them. If they're smart, they'll stay that way."
Koukin hoped so, she'd hate to deal with them again. Not because it would be difficult but because she might actually do something more severe should they try something again.
It was Bell's merciful hand that saved them, not hers.
She gestured to Lili to continue, "The reason why Lili's familia was so active was because-," she swallowed, "was because of what happened at Denatus. Our God didn't attend but we still managed to know what happened," she sighed, still finding what she was about to say hard to believe, "about the meeting with a God still in Heaven and the gift he made before dropping it on someone in the mortal world. A gift that…can bring people from other worlds into ours."
Lili felt tension in her stomach when saying those words. She wanted to laugh just to get rid of the feeling. That or throw up.
She continued, "It's crazy and sounds too good to be true and Lili believed it was. That it was just another prank from the Gods. From one that doesn't need to worry about retribution from those below. But it didn't matter what Lili believed, when everyone else seemed to think it was real."
She recalled her journey over here, avoiding scrutiny wherever she could when she could spot a familiar face from her familia. Using her magic in and out of streets and alleyways to best avoid detection.
"Lili didn't want any part in the search," she said before shrugging, "so Lili's been keeping her head down but her eyes open. Any trouble to be avoided is to be avoided. Even still…by the looks of things it's only going to get more complicated. Lili doubts it's just her familia that's been on the lookout for this blessed child."
She took a breath, more to steady herself for what she was about to ask.
She could stop here. End the meeting there and now before she said too much. She still didn't know how Koukin would react to what she would say.
But…if it concerned Bell. It was worth it.
"It wasn't till now that Lili began thinking about something," Lili said, "something that hasn't bothered me until now."
"And that is?" Koukin asked and Lili had to fight the urge to shudder at the voice she used. It was cold, detached. As if Koukin wasn't looking at her as an ally anymore but as a potential threat or liability.
Even still, Lili continued.
"It's that…you and the others came here not too long ago, right?"
"Not recently," Koukin said and Lili could hear the raised brow in the words.
She quickly corrected, "N-not in the last few days! Lili means in the last month or so!"
"Correct," Koukin said, tone neutral.
"And Master Bell has been an adventurer for just over a month, yes?"
"A month and a half," Koukin corrected, "give or take a few days,"
"Which makes it odd," Lili continued, "that Bell or Hestia was able to recruit so many of you, despite not even having an alias or much of a reputation yet."
"It could be because we joined with them for our own interests," Koukin said, "and Hestia familia happened to meet our expectations."
"As opposed to Loki, Freya, Genasha, or the numerous other familias that can easily meet your expectations?" Lili counters, "I doubt Hestia would register with how new it was in comparison."
Koukin didn't respond to the counter, simply staring at Lili with calculating eyes. Eventually though, she spoke, "What are you getting at, Miss Arde?"
"It's hard to say and difficult to imagine but…," Lili paused, choosing her words, "but I can't help it. Bell has been an adventurer for around the time this God said he gave this gift to someone in Orario. Hestia familia has since added more members, all women. In a familia run by a virgin Goddess with one man as its captain," she focuses on Koukin but looks like she was focusing on several things at once, or several people actually, "not to mention how capable some of you are. Elbia can fight well beyond what a level one can do, Chitoge is similar, Arue casts magic with next to no issue with running out of mind, and Takeru is definitely someone that is beyond a beginner, she's practically a veteran."
Lili looks at Koukin with more purpose, "You yourself are definitely above that of a beginner adventurer and your ability to plot and strategize definitely speaks to experience abound. Where you got it, I have no idea but I can imagine."
Not to mention, now Hestia had more new recruits like mages with amazing abilities, a rare engineer, fighters with experience from unknown places, and even an amazing maid.
Lili drew in a breath, tension and nerves calming once more before flaring up. She should probably stop now but she had to ask a question. A very important and obvious question that needed to be said for her own piece of mind.
But she had to ask something else first.
"Koukin," Lili said, and the familiar way she addressed the vice-captain surprised said person, whose eyes widened at the sudden lack of formality, "Lili is going to ask you a question. Don't answer it. Don't say anything at all. Okay?"
Koukin looked at Lili with renewed interest. She had already expected what she was about to ask but she didn't want a reply? Then why ask at all?
Lili leaned forward on the couch, expression stern and she asked her questions.
"Does Bell have the gift from above? Does Bell have the 'Drop of Eros'?"
Silence.
All was still and quiet after Lili asked her questions. As if the utterance of them attempted to silence the world with their gravity.
Both Koukin and Lili looked at each other for a long time, expressions neutral and unchanging. Eyes meeting not in a battle of wills but an unspoken exchange that only the two were aware of. Both were gaining a different measure of the other trying to see something that could or couldn't be explained away.
Lili stared into Koukin's green eyes a moment longer before closing her own and sighing, leaning back on the couch exhausted, as if she had just run a mile.
Soon she spoke just two words, "Lili sees."
Silence came over the room again and after a moment, Koukin broke the silence this time, "Liliruca-"
Before she could say anything else, Lili leaned forward and gave a loud exhale, not of exhaustion but of determination. As if coming to a sudden conclusion.
Lili soon looked into Koukin's eyes again, only this time there was a fire in them that the strategist hadn't ever seen.
"Lili owes her life to Master Bell," Lili began, "Lili owes her life to all of Hestia familia. Lili was a simple supporter, doing her best to just stay alive. Lili has endured humiliation and abuse both small and large. Lili became an opportunist that took advantage of those that gave her even a little kindness for the sake of survival."
Her voice grew stronger as she continued, more resolved, "That changed when Lili met you all. Lili didn't want to survive anymore, she wanted to live! Thanks to you, she could!"
Koukin was speechless. This was not expected. Lili surprised Koukin with this sudden speech and it was one that picked at Koukin's pride and honor. Here was a pallum, one of the weakest races in the world, putting more strength in her words than Koukin had seen from generals she knew.
Lili wasn't done speaking, "With that said. What just happened was this. Lili asked you a question and you didn't answer, that's all," she ended with a nod of her head and a crossing of her arms, "nothing more to discuss and nothing more to say. This conversation never happened."
Koukin stared at Lili for a moment, processing the words that were just said. She didn't need long to figure out the meaning.
Lili was going to keep this a secret. Hestia familia's strange members, Bell's gift, all of it. She was going to safeguard this knowledge the best she could.
Koukin found herself sighing as she leaned back on the couch, turning her head up to the ceiling, nearly laughing at the sensation of relief she was feeling.
"Thank you, Miss Arde," she said.
"For what?"
Koukin laughed this time, softly, "Nothing. Nothing at all."
Lili nodded and now stood with a stretch, "If that's all," she began, "Lili is gonna head out. Lili has her own preparations to do before our little journey. Until then, take care Miss Shuuyu."
"Koukin," interrupted the vice-captain, "you can call me Koukin."
Lili blinked in surprise for a moment before smiling, "Okay, Koukin," she replied, "until next we meet."
Koukin nodded and bade her farewell. Watching her now that the pallum's back was turned.
For a brief moment, as Lili walked to the door, Koukin admired the form of the pallum. Seeing her well curved backside and equally curved waist. She licked her lips, wishing she could convince Lili to stay a little longer.
She shook her head and got herself under control. She was getting too admiring of the supporter. She had to calm down.
Difficult as it was to watch such a fine and intelligent woman go.
Lili gave a squawk of surprise when she suddenly realized Kirumi was at the door suddenly and holding a plate of fresh almond cookies. Lili looked at the maid, then down the hall to a shrugging Koukin, then to the cookies and the door. With a shake of the head, she took a few cookies and walked out the door.
As Kirumi closed it, she heard the happy squeal of Lili from the other side. She smiled, Lili liked the cookies, good.
Kirumi eventually approached Koukin with the plate and set it on the coffee table. The strategist of the familia took one and bit into it, melting in joy at the flavor.
"I heard your conversation with Lady Arde," Kirumi said, turning to look over at the entrance to the home, "are you sure it's wise to let her go?"
Koukin finished her snack and looked to the maid, a smile on her lips, "After hearing such conviction with your own ears, do you not have faith in our little ally?"
Kirumi looked to Koukin then and answered, "I believe that I may be poorly qualified for that," she shrugged, "I do not know her as well as you or the others. Which brings me back to my question. Are you sure it was wise to let her go knowing what she knows now?"
Koukin hummed and thought of an answer. She thought harder and looked back on her slew of memories in her past life. Some old and painful to remember. She recalled someone then, in the life where she met a fiery end. A girl who she was critical of since she took over the kingdom that was made by her betters. How harsh she was to that girl, despite her being the younger sister of her lover, now deceased in that life. How she hardly believed in her lofty goals and foolhardy ambitions. How she mocked her soft nature in a time of war and conquest.
Koukin eventually betrayed her. Raised an army and made deals with persons of power and motives unimaginable. She fought against this foolish girl, trying to take back a kingdom that was built by those she truly respected and revered.
In the end though, she was defeated. By that same foolish girl and her friends. Even at the end, when fire and ash threatened to consume them both, that girl still tried to save her. Still being kind to her despite all the hurt and pain she inflicted.
It was then that Koukin learned something of value, something she never thought possible in a world on conquerors and battlefields. Kindness was its own kind of strength. Faith in others was its own unique tool for victory.
And she was brought low by them once. Now?
She was willing to use them wholeheartedly.
"I have faith in Liliruca," Koukin said with a smile, "she will keep the secret secure and help us greatly in the future," she reached down and took another cookie, "of that, I have no doubts."
Kirumi stared at her for a moment before a small smile graced her features, "Very well, Miss Shuuyu," she said, "I leave it in your hands," her smile turned mischievous, "until you drop it and I have to clean it up."
Koukin snickered, "First time I've heard you crack a joke," she said.
"It's not something I often do. Don't expect many from me. Besides, I'm told my brand of humor is rather dry."
Koukin just gave a laugh, one of amusement and disbelief. This day was turning out to be full of surprises.
The door to the familia home opened with a bang and both strategist and maid looked to who came in.
"Hello! We're back!" exclaimed a happy Charlotte, trailing ahead of a peaceful Rinko, "And it was a good day on the job!"
Koukin smiled at the two, "That saves me one question at least," she said, "the other would be why are you back so early? Usually Hestia comes back home a bit later."
"We did an admirable job today so the Goddess told us to go home early while she finished up," Rinko said with a smile, "very kind of her. So how were things here? Did the meeting go well?"
Koukin nodded and gestured for the two to sit. They did so and Kirumi went back to the kitchen to get drinks while the three enjoyed the remaining cookies.
"We went over the details and broad strokes quite well," Koukin explained, "in addition, I have something to share with everyone but it can wait until all are present and accounted for."
"Ohhh!" Charlotte cood, "Is it some kind of Dungeon secret that Lili shared?"
"Nothing so dramatic," laughed Koukin, "just a…new approach to things with a good friend in the future."
"Sounds like you two had an interesting conversation," Rinko commented with a smile, "were there any problems you and others may have going down into the Dungeon?"
Koukin shook her head, "No," she replied, "we should have everything ready in time for our journey."
"I'm happy to hear that," Rinko said with a smile, "I was worried there were going to be complications in a…what's the word? Ah! Operation like this."
Koukin nodded, not disagreeing with the statement, "Let me promise you," she began with a rueful grin, "the complications will probably start when we begin our journey."
"That doesn't bother you?" Charlotte asked, her voice barely eligible with the cookies in her mouth, "I thought for sure you'd be the type to get really frustrated by that."
Koukin smiled at the question, "I can assure you. If there is one thing I've learned in my time strategizing, it's that no plan survives initial contact," she said with a laugh, "I can make whatever genius strategy I want. But there are some things I just can't plan for completely, the Dungeon is such a thing."
Charlotte hummed at that, a hum that turned to joy when Kirumi returned with fresh tea. The former princess took her cup and washed down her treat with a gracious sip, "Ahhh! I understand," she said, finishing her drink, "I wish I could go down there with you all," she rubbed the back of her head in embarrassment, "but I know I'll just get in the way. I'm not much of a fighter after all."
"I find that if one puts in the effort of what they want," Koukin said, watching as Kirumi refills Charlotte's cup, "it becomes something they have. If you want to go down in the dungeon with us, you have to train."
Charlotte nodded but shivered at the thought, "I've seen how some of you train," she said, "especially Bell. I'm surprised he can even move after all the training he puts himself through."
Koukin smiled as she thought of her captain. Out of anyone in the familia, he just might be the most remarkable.
"Bell is certainly an outlier in regards to his training," she said, "out of everyone here, he's the one that seems to push himself the most," she suddenly sighed, "despite my and others' request that he take it easy."
"He's an ambitious and driven young man," Rinko said with a smile, "in my experience, you can only try your best to be there for him when he goes too far."
"Thankfully, it seems he hasn't," Koukin said, "baring the minotaur battle, Bell has taken steps to be more cautious and responsive to danger. A feat that is only heightened by his training," she took a long sip of her tea, a content smile spreading across her face, "I think it's safe to say that our familia shouldn't be having any more unexpected surprises anytime soon."
Of course it was in that moment that the world reminded her that even she can be wrong at times.
A sudden slamming of a door opening made all but Kirumi jump in surprise. They turned their heads at the sound of running feet coming from upstairs to downstairs.
Everyone saw Miyuki and Rin carrying a round crystal like object together that glowed an eerie blue.Together the two looked this way and that, nervous sweat pouring down their faces.
"Sh-should we throw it outside?" Miyuki asked, looking out a nearby window.
"No way in hell!" yelled Rin with a rapid shake of her head, "we need to put this thing somewhere confined. The more space, the more trouble."
The strange crystal they carried glowed gradually brighter and was now making a vibrant humming noise.
"What should we do?! What should we do?!!" Miyuki panickedly asked.
Rin thought quickly, "Downstairs! Hurry!"
The two dashed to the door to the basement, passing by bewildered and curious familia members. They reached their destination and swiftly made their way down. Koukin and the others could hear the surprised cries of Elbia and Hana from below.
"What just happened?" Koukin asked, completely at a loss, "What was that thing Rin and Miyuki were holding?"
"A boundary generator apparently," came a familiar voice.
Koukin turned and saw Hakufu coming down alongside a sheepish Arue and an ashamed Misato.
She didn't like those looks on the mages. Something clearly went wrong during their experiment.
Before she could ask anything, the whole house shook suddenly and there was a large bang coming from downstairs.
Everyone watched the door to the basement wondering what happened and if their allies were alright. Before Koukin could give the order to check on them, Hana and Elbia came out in a rush, followed by Rin and Miyuki, who were dragging their feet as if exhausted from the strange event.
Following them all was a large cloud of light blue smoke that quickly began filling the Hestia familia home.
Koukin's visual of everyone was gradually being reduced but she managed to close in on those that she wanted to talk to the most.
"Explain," Koukin said, it was not a request.
Rin and Miyuki managed to look ashamed and embarrassed before the smoke obscured them. It was Rin who would begin.
"Okay…it started like this."
