Chapter 1 - 1. Unlucky luckly : Jang mi

In an office, four candidates sat on chairs facing five interviewers. One chair remained empty, and the interviewers inquired about the missing candidate. The secretary went out to check, calling out for "candidate 7, Ms. Jang Mi? Ms. Jang Mi!!" When no one responded, the secretary started closing the door. Only then did a strong voice exclaim from afar, "I am here! I am here! Sorry for being late!"

A young lady appeared with a petite figure and long, dark brown hair, styled in loose waves with layered bangs. Her cute, warm smile contrasted with the interviewers' expressions of disappointment at her tardiness, but she remained relaxed. Unlike the other candidates, who were dressed formally in black suits and shoes, she wore a yellow top and jeans, maintaining a smile on her face. This made one of the interviewers look visibly annoyed with her act.

During the first round of questions, Jang Mi confidently answered all inquiries and technical questions without hesitation. The other candidates also attempted to respond, but unlike Jang Mi, they appeared stressed and kept changing their answers upon noticing any hint of disapproval from the main interviewer's facial expressions. This surprised her a little bit. "Why are they all acting like that?" she thought.

The main interviewer cut her thoughts short by questioning her desire for the job, pointing out her lack of stress and her unsuitable outfit for an interview. He then asked if she was overly confident or simply uninterested in the job.

Jang Mi responded calmly, stating, "Oh, there's nothing to be stressed about. I'm confident that I will get this job."

This reply irked the interviewer :"What do you mean by you will get this job?".

She explained: "I am a top student, I have all the requirements for this job... and more importantly, I am very lucky!"

The interviewer started laughing. "Luck? Really? Do you believe luck will help you here? You come late and wearing clothes like that, honestly, you need a miracle to pass, not just some luck."

Jang Mi maintained her composure, explaining she was late because she helped an elderly man find his dog on the way to the interview. She added: "I trust my luck would somehow reward me for the good deed."

The candidates chuckled at her response, angering the interviewer who announced that he would not allow her to get the job. "Okay then," Jang Mi replied simply and unperturbed.

At that moment, an elderly man with gray hair entered the room with his dog in hand. The interviewers greeted him anxiously, everyone looking stressed except for the candidates, who didn't know he was the CEO of the company. The man looked around and headed directly to Jang Mi.

"Thank you so much for earlier," he said. "You helped me find my lovely dog despite having an interview. That was so nice and brave of you."

The CEO then turned to the interviewers and asked about Jang Mi's performance: "I think she is doing well in her interview. You guys won't deduct points because she was late, right?"

The interviewers, stunned by the unexpected turn of events, quickly assured the CEO of Jang Mi's competence. They even offered her the job on the spot. She looked delighted upon hearing the news and thanked the CEO.

The CEO decided to place her in Lee Hoo's team, acknowledging the positive energy she brought, and noting that the team needed more of that energy as well.

His dog suddenly wriggled free from his hug and began running away. The CEO exclaimed aloud, "My lovely dog!! Why do you keep running away from me these days? Come here!"

Everyone in the room was thinking the same thing—maybe the dog had run away because he had hugged and kissed it too hard. The CEO then left the room, following his dog.

This left everyone in the room shocked and questioning whether Jang Mi's success was truly a result of luck alone.

Jang Mi's life seemed to be filled with instances of luck. From her childhood, she rarely got caught by her parents or teachers when she did something wrong, unlike her siblings . If she was ever late to school, the teacher would call in sick; if she forgot to do her homework, the teacher wouldn't ask for it; and if she didn't know an answer in an exam, she'd take a gamble and somehow turn out to be right. When she was young, Jang Mi always seemed to win the coveted stickers. The kids in her neighborhood even persuaded her to buy biscuits for them, hoping to take advantage of her luck to win the good stickers.

Luck always seemed to be on her side, effortlessly granting her desires and even providing better outcomes than she anticipated.

Like the time when she chose her university, Jang Mi's life seemed to be guided by strokes of luck. She had set her sights on attending FC University, renowned for its prestige as the best university in the country. She had worked tirelessly to prepare for the entrance exam, fully determined to secure her place. However, fate had other plans. On the day of the exam, she fell ill and was unable to take the test. She doubted her luck for a moment and was planning on reapplying the following year. In the meantime, she took another university's entrance exam as practice. To her surprise, she was selected for UT University of Technologies with a full scholarship.

This unexpected opportunity relieved her of the financial burden of tuition and even provided assistance with her living expenses. While Jang Mi's family struggled financially and couldn't afford her studies, this scholarship presented her with a chance to pursue her education without worries. Initially disappointed about missing the FC exam, she soon realized that perhaps it was for the best. UT University had a strong track record of graduates finding employment quickly, even surpassing FC University in some aspects. With this stroke of luck, Jang Mi embraced her new path, grateful for the opportunities that lay ahead, and she became more and more confident about her luck.

However, there was one area where luck consistently eluded her—love. Despite her best efforts, she never seemed to find reciprocated feelings or someone who truly appreciated her. While she remained optimistic in other aspects of her life, her romantic struggles left her feeling anything but lucky.

amidst her academic success, she couldn't help but wonder if her luck in love would ever change.

Jang Mi's first experience with love occurred during elementary school. She found herself drawn to a boy who had a knack for storytelling, Ha Joon. He would entertain her with tales of his grandparents' love, his mother's insistence on eating vegetables, and his aspirations of becoming a doctor someday. Jang Mi cherished these moments; he was her best friend then. She always liked the attention he gave her and the genuine connection they shared.

Determined to express her feelings, Jang Mi decided to confess her affection by buying him a cake. However, her well-intentioned gesture took an unexpected turn when the boy revealed he had allergies. Before he could spell a single word, he began to turn red, signaling a reaction. In a panic, he was rushed to the hospital by the teachers immediately. Miraculously, Jang Mi managed to avoid detection by the teachers, and the boy refrained from revealing her involvement. Despite her stroke of luck in avoiding trouble, she was left heartbroken as Ha joon distanced himself from her. Eventually, he transferred to another elementary school, leaving Jang Mi devastated and screaming in frustration at the unfairness of it all.

In middle school, she had a crush on a lovely boy. He was handsome with silky curly hair, tall, and popular. Instead of giving him chocolate to avoid allergy problems this time, she wrote him a letter. She waited in front of his school (a boys' school) to hand him the letter. She had practiced doing her confession so many times, "Nothing could go wrong, right?" she thought. She saw him approaching the school gate with his friends, looking as good as always. She became more and more stressed as he approached. She blocked his way and looked him dead in the eyes. He seemed to have no idea who she was or what she was doing. She kept silent, practicing her phrase in her mind when a speeding motorcycle passed by her, startling her. She lost her balance and fell. In her fall, she accidentally grabbed and pulled down her crush's pants with her. He stood there in shock, only in his underwear, while everyone witnessing the scene started laughing hard, He screamed, "You pervert, don't touch me!" while pulling up his pants. She couldn't explain the situation and could only cover her red face with her hands as she ran away. After that embarrassing incident, Jang Mi couldn't bring herself to face him ever again.

Her confession experiences always ended in huge catastrophes, but sometimes she ended up heartbroken instead. Like the time in her senior year of high school, when she had a crush on a boy who ranked second in the class. He was smart and kind to her, often seeking her help with math problems. She always blushed in his presence, considering him the only handsome boy in class.

One day, she decided to confess her feelings. She looked for him during the morning break and followed him behind the classes. He was there with his friends, talking and laughing. She approached the group to overhear them discussing girls and rating them based on their looks. She hid nearby to hear the rest of the conversation. To her dismay, they ranked her near the bottom, with him giving her barely a 2 out of 10, citing her intelligence as her only trait. Crushed by this unexpected blow to her confidence, Jang Mi struggled to come to terms with feeling unattractive for the first time in her life. She was never sure if hearing that was bad luck because she liked him or good luck since she now knew more about his true personality. What was certain is that after this incident, she took more care with her skincare, hairstyle, and outfits, trying to look her best every day from then on.

In her second-year of university, Jang Mi developed a crush on a new student who was a year younger than her. They bonded over helping him find his classes and spending time together in the cafeteria. One day, she overheard him asking his friend to take care of his fish while he went on a trip, but his friend refused. Seeing an opportunity to get closer to him, Jang Mi volunteered to take care of the fish.

He was so happy and thrilled by her offer, which was her purpose somehow. The next day, he brought the fish to her place, gave her instructions on how to care for it, and left. Jang Mi was thrilled and even researched everything she could about fish care.

The first day, the fish seemed to not be moving as it should, which puzzled Jang Mi. She searched online to understand why this might have happened. Her friend Seo-ah, who had experience with fish at her grandma's house, told her that the fish might be depressed because they don't like changes in their environment. Jang Mi blamed herself, wondering if she should have played with the fish more or bought another fish to keep it company. She was unsure what to do.

Unfortunately, the fish died the very next day, plunging Jang Mi into a state of panic and desperation. Frantically, she tried everything she could to revive the lifeless creature, resorting to absurd measures like performing CPR on a fish. With trembling hands and a heavy heart, she pressed her lips against the fish's tiny mouth, trying to breathe life back into its motionless body. She didn't realize her mother had come to give her side dishes until she felt her presence. The mother was shocked to see her child, the "smartest one," giving CPR to a fish.

When Jang Mi finally noticed her mother, she attempted to explain her situation. However, her mother only nodded her head in disappointment and said, "You should spend more time with normal people and stay away from books." before walking away.

Heartbroken, she called her crush in tears, fearing his anger or disappointment at the news of his fish's death. Unexpectedly, he seemed indifferent, casually brushing off her distress and suggesting he would replace the fish since it was sick anyway. Angry and hurt, Jang Mi couldn't fathom why he would entrust her with a sick fish without explaining its condition. She questioned his lack of empathy, wondering why he appeared to enjoy himself while his pet perished. After all, fish are living creatures too!

The next day, she wore all black to mourn the loss of the fish and her crushed hopes. Her close friend, Seo-ah, couldn't contain her laughter. "Are you seriously mourning a fish?" she exclaimed. "It's not even a big one!"

Her friend Seo-ah, a stylish girl with long dark hair and a girly vibe, tried hard to set Jang Mi up with someone during college. She arranged numerous blind dates, but they all ended badly. Some of the dates never called back, while others seemed reluctant to be there. There were also those who miraculously got hurt—stumbling on steps, spilling drinks everywhere, or encountering other unfortunate events. This made Jang Mi start carrying an emergency kit with her whenever she went on a blind date. No matter how much effort Seo-ah put in, something always seemed to go wrong.

Jang Mi never lost at paper-rock-scissors, thanks to her remarkable luck. She always managed to get a free ice cream whenever she bought one. Confident in her fortune, she never bought two ice creams when she was with Seo-ah, confidently declaring, "We only need one; we'll get one for free, don't worry." She often joked that her ability to win free ice cream was her response to Seo-ah's efforts to set her up on blind dates.

Despite all these bad experiences, Jang Mi still trusted in her luck. She believed that perhaps those incidents happened to prevent her from encountering even worse outcomes. Maybe they happened so that she could meet her true love later on. But as doubts crept in, she couldn't help but wonder if she was just unlucky in love after all.

 ------

Jang Mi woke up full of energy and hope on her first day at work. She was thrilled to have found a job on her first try, relieved that she could keep her place and avoid moving back to her parents' house. After drinking her morning juice, she smiled brightly, feeling ready to take on the day. Donning a pink cool jacket, a floral blouse, and her favorite jeans, she stepped out of her house with confidence. As she exited, she couldn't contain her excitement and let out a loud "Let's go!!!" that startled her neighbors. Quickly apologizing, she headed out to the office, eager to start her new journey.

She boarded the bus, and everything seemed perfect. It arrived on time, she found an empty seat, and her favorite song played on the bus radio. Jang Mi couldn't help but feel lucky, just like every other day. Once she arrived at her destination and reclaimed her badge, she was heading towards the elevator when she accidentally bumped into a tall, handsome man with styled dark hair, thick eyebrows, plump lips, and a lean, athletic build. He smelled so nice—his shampoo fragrance was delightful.

Jang Mi: (unintentionally blurting out) "Hmm, you smell nice. Your shampoo smells great."

Jang Mi quickly followed up with a sheepish, "Sorry, sorry," hoping he hadn't heard her. However, he continued to gaze at her face with his piercing eyes and simply said, "Jang Mi?" Surprised, she wondered if he actually knew her.

"Do you know me?" she asked.

Looking nervous, he glanced at the ceiling, then at the floor, and back to the ceiling, trying to find an escape from her question, before noticing her badge. "It's on your badge," he pointed out.

She smiled, and they headed to the elevator together.

The elevator suddenly stuck, and she found herself trapped with the man she had bumped into earlier. Confused, she couldn't understand why it had happened and kept muttering, "That's weird." The tall man asked if she was okay and if she was scared. She denied feeling scared, just finding the situation strange. He replied that elevator malfunctions were common here.

"No, you don't understand," she insisted, "that's weird because I am lucky!"

He continued to look at her, not quite understanding what she meant. She repeated, "I am lucky, these things don't happen to me."

He burst into a smirk and laughed, "There's no such thing as luck in life, only coincidences."

She grew frustrated and exclaimed, "I can prove it! I am lucky!" Before she could finish her sentence and explain further, the elevator doors opened, and the man stepped out.

After that, she couldn't stop thinking about the elevator incident and kept searching for an explanation. Why would she be unlucky and get stuck there? Or perhaps it was luck, but what did she benefit from that experience?

And why did that handsome jerk laugh when she said she was lucky? Did he think she was stupid for believing in luck? "Unbelievable, how could he!" she thought. She vowed to prove him wrong next time.

She decided to set aside her thoughts for now and meet her team. What was it? Lee Hoo's team? Taking a deep breath, she entered the room and greeted everyone, "Hello everyone, I'm the new intern, Jang Mi."

Everyone was surprised by how colorful she was. Almost everyone there wore black blazers, and she entered with her pink jacket and floral blouse, standing out like the sun entering the dark side. She couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with them, and they were wondering the same thing about her

They welcomed her and showed her desk, saying, "Welcome to our lucky intern."

In reality, after the interview incident, she became famous. People referred to her as the lucky intern. The team was curious about the new intern. One girl from the team, Amy, asked her, "Are you really lucky?".

One girl from the team, Amy, asked her, "Are you really lucky?"

Amy looked so pretty with her short, light brown hair styled in a loose carré.

Jang Mi replied confidently, "Yes, I am." Amy was surprised by her confidence and demanded that she prove it.

In these kinds of situations, Jang Mi had one way to go: rock-paper-scissors game! She played against each team member one by one, shouting, "Rock, paper, scissors!" and won every time. Confidently, she declared, "I told you," and even played against them twice, still winning each time.

Amidst all the commotion and giggling, a deep voice behind her asked, "What's all this fuss about?" It was him, the man from the elevator! The team members quickly returned to their desks as Lee Hoo, the team manager, approached.

"So he was the team manager, Lee Hoo," Jang Mi thought.

Amy explained to him that they were just welcoming the new intern and testing her luck, as she claimed. He replied, "There's no such thing as luck in life, only coincidences."

Seizing the opportunity to prove him wrong, Jang Mi challenged him, "So, would you play rock-paper-scissors against me, sir?" To everyone's surprise, he agreed.

And so, they counted, "One, two, three, rock, paper, scissors!" He won! It seemed impossible; she had never lost in her life. What was happening to her? Where was her luck?

He smiled and said, "Well, I guess you're not that lucky after all , Miss Jang Mi."
