Chapter 28 - A Son's Wish

I sat rigid in the sleek black car, nervously fiddling with the strap of my bag. Adrian had insisted I take his driver home, leaving me no chance to argue. The memory of his cold fury when he spotted Julian's hickey still made my stomach clench.

Before leaving, I'd knelt down to Leo's level, promising I'd see him tomorrow. His small arms had wrapped around my neck in a surprise hug.

"Promise you won't quit?" he'd whispered, his voice trembling slightly.

"I promise," I'd replied, my heart breaking at his insecurity. "I'll be back tomorrow with a new book for us to read together."

Now, watching the mansion disappear through the rear window, I couldn't help but wonder what Adrian Valois really thought of me. One moment he was defending me against Vincent's accusations, the next he was looking at me with icy disapproval.
