Chapter 39 - Interesting technique

In fact, I don't know whether that notebook was destroyed or hidden... But we can make an inference in reverse. If it was to be destroyed, it could have been done right there and then, there was no need for me to take it away and do it later... When Leonard asked the question, Klein instantly entered the "keyboard detective" mode and said thoughtfully:

"Perhaps the unknown entity that I came into contact with with Welch and Naya enjoyed the 'sacrifice' of life and also hoped for similar things to happen, so, since the 'suicide incident' would definitely be discovered, I took the notebook away and hid it to prepare for the second 'enjoyment', but something went wrong during the process, and I ultimately failed to commit suicide."

This was Klein's reasonable speculation based on the materials he had read in his previous life, such as books, films, and TV series involving evil sacrifices.

As for what went wrong during the process, he was very clear about it. That was because he, the time traveler, was an "independent variable".

"A good explanation, but I think there might be another possibility. The suicide sacrifice of Welch and Naya gave that unknown entity the possibility of appearing. The notebook carried or nurtured evil, and you took it away and hid it, fearing that it would be discovered before 'birth' and 'becoming powerful', and be directly destroyed." Leonard Mitchell was elaborating on another possibility.

At this point, he stared at Klein's eyes and smiled slightly:

"Of course, the notebook might have been destroyed. The purpose was to cover up the content on it, cover up the object that truly carried or nurtured evil. In this way, your suicide failure has a sufficient reason to explain it." What does it mean? Is he doubting me? Doubting that the original owner's body harbors or gives birth to evil? No, what it harbors or gives birth to is a time traveler... "The word 'harbor' is fine... " Klein was stunned for a moment, secretly mocking himself while deliberating and saying:

"I won't defend myself. After all, I really forgot that memory, but both the captain and Ms. Daly confirmed that I have no other problems. Your joke isn't funny."

"I'm just exploring this possibility. We can't rule out that the unknown entity encountered a setback when it arrived, so that you failed in your suicide attempt. We should believe that the goddess is always protecting us." Leonard smiled and shifted the topic, "What did you discover this afternoon?"

After the conversation just now and the previous events, Klein had developed a deep suspicion of Leonard, but he answered calmly on the surface:

"There isn't anything. I have to change my route tomorrow afternoon."

He pointed to the partitioned path:

"I have to go to the armory to get some bullets."

"The Shooting Club" will be open until 9 p.m. After all, many of its members won't be free until they get off work.

"May the goddess protect you." Leonard smiled and drew a circle on his chest symbolizing the crimson moon.

Watching Klein pass through the partition, listening to the sound of his footsteps descending the stairs, Leonard's smile gradually faded, and his green eyes were filled with confusion.

He muttered something in a somewhat discontented tone. ...

After descending the stairs, Klein walked along the corridor illuminated by the gas lamps, turning towards the weapons, materials and documents storage area.

Here, the iron door was wide open. The brunette girl Rosan was standing at the long table, communicating with a middle-aged man with thick black beard and wearing a half-top hat.

"Good afternoon, no, good evening, it's always like midnight here, Klein. According to old Neil, you became an extraordinary person? What's your name, 'Diviner'?" Rosan turned her head and asked rapidly, her curiosity and concern evident.

She didn't hide her own curiosity and concern.

Klein smiled and nodded:

"Good afternoon, Miss Rosan. Although it's always dark here, it feels peaceful. Your description wasn't accurate. It should be like this: The name of the sequence potion I took is 'Diviner'."

"You still chose to become an extraordinary person... " Rosan sighed and said, momentarily falling into silence.

Klein looked at the middle-aged man beside him and politely asked:

"Who is this?"

The other night watchman, or someone I haven't met before, another of the civilian staff?

Rosan pursed her lips and said:

"Blair, our colleague. He wants to swap the shift with me, leaving the night after tomorrow free. He wants to go to the North District Grand Theatre with his wife to celebrate their wedding anniversary. What a romantic gentleman!"

Blair smiled and extended his hand:

"There's Rosan Miss, all matters don't need to be repeated. Hello, Klein, I didn't expect you to become an extraordinary person so quickly. As for me, ah, perhaps I will never have this courage."

"Probably because the ignorant are fearless." Klein said with self-mockery, extending his hand to shake the other's.

"It's not a bad thing." Blair shook his head and smiled, "Once there was an extraordinary person who told me before his death, never explore those strange and dangerous things. The less you know, the longer you live."

At this time, Rosan interjected:

"Klein, you don't need to worry too much. According to old Neil, your 'Diviner' is an auxiliary role, relatively safer. Why do you wear such clothes? Not at all gentlemanly! What are you doing here?"

"To receive thirty bullets for today." Klein didn't answer Rosan's previous question.

He believed this girl would soon forget about it.

"OK." Rosan pointed at the table and said, "Blair, it's all up to you. You should know the location of the keys and bullets. Eh, old Neil is really stingy. He didn't leave any coffee for grinding, he promised to let me have enough to satisfy... "

While she was rambling, Klein received the bullets.

The two of them left the underground together, parting on Zoteland Street. One took a public carriage home, the other entered the "Shooting Club".

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Hold the gun, raise the arm, shoot, throw out the rotating cylinder, remove the spent shell, insert a new bullet... Klein repeated this process over and over, familiarizing himself with and memorizing the feeling of shooting.

Of course, he had several breaks in between to summarize and correct.

After the practice, Klein used the venue to do many similar exercises like push-ups, striving to exercise his body and improve his physical condition.

When everything was over, he took an interurban public carriage back home, and found that it was nearly seven o'clock, the sky was already dark.

Just as Klein was planning to go to the market or the street to buy ingredients for dinner, he found the door open, and Melissa came back with a bag of stationery books.

In addition, she also carried a lot of vegetables. "... I think you and Benson will be back rather late today. We took 1 shilling from the place where you hid your money when we left this morning." Seeing her brother's puzzled look, Melissa habitually explained seriously.

"You took the money, why didn't you take the public carriage to school?" The reminded Klein recalled what happened in the morning.

Melissa frowned slightly and said:

"Why take the public carriage? It costs 4 pence to get to school, and 8 pence for a round trip. Including you and Benson, we would spend 24 pence on the public carriage every day. That's a total of 2 shillings and 3 pence, which is exactly 1 pound and 4 shillings and 3 pence. That's the rent for a whole week. Well, not including Sunday, it's 12 shillings. It's almost equal to our rent!"

Pause, pause, don't show off your math skills... Klein chuckled and patted her hand.

Melissa paused first, then added:

"I prefer to walk to school. The teacher said everyone should exercise regularly, and I can also pick up some broken parts on the way."

Klein chuckled and said:

"Then let's calculate again. The public carriage fare is 12 shillings, the rent is 12 shillings and 3 pence. In total, it's only 1 pound and 4 shillings and 3 pence. It can be paid with Benson's salary, and there will be some surplus. Well, he has received his salary from last week... And I can receive 1 pound and 10 shillings every week. Even if I eat meat every day, even including the expenses for gas, coal, wood, seasonings, etc., and be thrifty at lunch, there will still be some surplus. I can even subscribe to a morning newspaper, and it costs only 1 penny a day."

"After two months, when I have paid off the pre-empted salary, I can save money to buy new clothes for Benson and you."

"But, but, we have to consider the unexpected situations." Melissa insisted on her unchanged view.

Klein smiled at her and said:

"We can eat less meat. Don't you think it's wasteful to spend 100 minutes on the road every day? We can definitely use that time to read more books, think more, and improve our grades."

"In this way, Melissa, you can graduate with excellent grades, find a well-paid job, and then what are you worried about?" "..."

He drew on his previous experience of debating in forums and with people, and finally persuaded Melissa to agree to take the public carriage to school.

Sigh, finally got her convinced. No, it can't be called persuasion, it should be called reasoning... Klein muttered to himself. Taking the vegetables that Melissa bought, he sighed and said:

"Remember to buy beef or mutton, chicken... Be full and well-fed, so that you can have a healthy body and a smart brain to cope with the difficult studies."

Just talking about it made me want to drool a little...

Melissa pursed her lips and said silently for a few seconds:

"OK." ...

The next morning, while supervising Melissa getting on the public carriage, Klein and Benson parted at the street corner and each arrived at the company.

As soon as Klein stepped into the gate, he saw Old Neil and Rosan chatting at the reception desk. The former was still wearing a classic black robe, completely indifferent to the gazes of others, while the latter had changed into a light yellow lightweight dress.

"Good morning, Mr. Neil, Miss Rosan," Klein bowed and said.

Old Neil gave him a mischievous glance:

"Good morning. Did you not hear any inappropriate sounds last night?"

"No, I slept very well," Klein was also quite surprised by this.

He could only conclude that his inspiration was still not high enough...

"Haha, don't worry about it. Actually, it's not that easy to hear it," Old Neil pointed to the partitioned area, "Go to the armory there. We'll continue our 'Mysticism Course' this morning."

Klein nodded and followed Old Neil down the stairs, entering the underground area, and arriving at the armory. He replaced the one who had been on duty last night, Brett.

"What do we need to learn today?" Klein asked curiously.

Old Neil gave a long sigh and said:

"Complex and basic knowledge. But before that, let me teach you an interesting trick."

He pointed to the silver chain wrapped around his wrist, and at the top of the chain hung a pure white crystal.
