'Tiffany, Tiffany !!'Mrs Smith called Tiffany with obvious excitement in her voice which led Tiffany to run down the stairs in haste to understand what was going on. Her mom was sitting on the parlour sofa evidently holding a paper and an envelope in her hand.
'Mom what's wrong' Tiffany said as she was curious to see what was written on the paper her mom was holding.
'Tiffany, congratulations!!!. You've been offered a scholarship to Willows University' Mrs Smith smiles like she owned the world. It was not easy to be admitted through a scholarship at Willows University.
Willows University was the most prestigious university in the country Tridax. It is known as the university for the children of high class citizens in Tridax. They offered scholarships to students with high grades after they passed their examination and screening which is rumoured to be abominable. They offered scholarships to the top 1% of students who take the exams.
Tiffany couldn't believe it. She was so overwhelmed that she just kept on screaming. It was truly a surprise.
'But Tiffany, are you sure you want this? I don't want you to regret this. I've heard a lot about that university. I really don't know what to tell you but everything is still up to you. Your decision is final' Mrs Smith said with a look of concern. She was really concerned about her daughter's choice and didn't want her daughter to make an irreversible mistake. Mr Smith didn't really mind Tiffany's choice because he trusted her judgement.
I totally understand their worry though. Wilhelm University was known to have various cases of discrimination amongst the elite group and the students on scholarship. The university was originally built for the elites which they held such standard until they started receiving a backlash based on the fact that they wanted to neglect the poor just because they could and it became a huge scandal so to repair the damage it caused they instead made a scholarship system in which the top one percent of the students that passed would get a free scholarship throughout their stay in the university.
Rumors had it that scholarship students had it rough because at the end of the day the university was populated with more of the elite class. The university sure knew how to cover up cases that could tarnish its image. There was really no evidence that could prove that they were right so people naturally feigned ignorance and decided not to take the matter seriously. Mrs Smith really did not want to take her chances on Tiffany and she wanted to be sure this was what Tiffany wanted.
'Mom you don't have to worry about me I think I would do just fine. I'm pretty mature you know', Tiffany playfully replied trying to ease her mother's uneasy mind.
'I'm going to break the good news to your father when he gets back. Congratulations again Tiffany. You make me proud'. Mrs Smith told Tiffany before she left.
The day finally came when Tiffany was to start her life as a Wilhelm student. Her parents had already gotten her ready. They had gone through the normal processes that needed to be done before she could resume. Tiffany started feeling nervous that morning. She was really rethinking her decision. All her excitement had faded away but there was no turning back in reality.
' Tiffany, Tiffany, Tiffany', She snapped back to reality when she heard her name. 'Tiffany, what's wrong'
'Mom it's nothing really, I'm just so excited, there is nothing to worry about' she said. She didn't want her parents to worry about her so she feigned excitement.
Tiffany packed her necessary luggage to her dormitory. Willows didn't separate scholarship students from elite students both classes and dorm wise. The students were mixed up and that made people believe that the stories they had heard about Wilhelm were false. It was just impossible to point fingers if the school was impartial with dorm allocations, classes and sport activities.
On her way, she noticed that she was getting stares from the girls, I mean who wouldn't. Tiffany had a unique hair and eye colour. She has blonde hair and blue eyes. It reminds me of the sea, very dreamy, very captivating but there was one thing, she covered herself in sweat shirts, hoodies and baggy pants, she didn't want the attention she was getting.
'This is bad', Tiffany said to herself as she walked to her dorm.
'Sorry, where can I find dorm 306?', Tiffany asked a girl.
'I'm Melanie and you are?'
'Tiffany', Tiffany replied
'Let me take you there, you have pretty eyes by the way, your glasses don't look like you have eye issues'
'I didn't think that was easy to notice. Is it obvious', Tiffany said wearily because if Melanie could notice it this easily she would be busted in no time. It was something to worry about. Melanie laughed and assured her to not worry because it wasn't and can only be noticed through close observation.
'This is your dorm Tiffany. Luckily we're next door neighbours. Enjoy your stay'.
Tiffany was happy, at least Melanie looked nice and smart and she wouldn't have to worry about crazy neighbours. It brought her some satisfaction, now the problem is how was she going to blend in. She resumed a week later than usual for personal reasons and she wanted to mentally prepare herself for what would be coming her way at Willows. 'What's the worst that could happen' were the words of encouragement Tiffany kept giving herself.
She had to go through this phase with her basic principles in mind,'To read, to not stand out, avoid boys, avoid picking girls if not girls in general, in fact avoid everybody but most of all, avoid trouble by all means necessary'. The university was known to have rumours without evidence and she on the other hand did not want to end up being an experiment to test the rumours. She believed that a rumour would not start without a spark. It is best to steer clear of any sort of trouble.
She lay on her bed facing the ceiling thinking of what to do and how she would make it out of the school in one piece.
' Viva la vida' Tiffany kept telling herself before she fell into a slumber.
