Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Vow She Can’t Break

The first sign that something was wrong came at sunrise.

A ripple in the warding barrier.

A flicker in the system interface.

And then—a scream.

Not one of pain.

But of rage.

Kai sprinted from his tent, shirt half-fastened, heart pounding. The others were already up, weapons drawn, magic primed.

Then they saw her.

Elira.

Kneeling in the center of the clearing, both palms pressed to the earth, light erupting from beneath her skin — not hers.

Divine light.

Unwelcome. Uninvited. Invasive.

[System Alert: Divine Trial Engaged – Target: Elira Valen]

Trial Type: Bloodbound Oath Reversal

Origin: Celestial Tribunal

Objective: Break her vow to Kai Veyron

Failure to comply: Subject's soul will rupture.

"No," Kai breathed. "No, not her."

He ran to her side.

"Elira—Elira, look at me!"

Her eyes fluttered open — gold and white, like suns burning in agony.

"I can't stop it," she whispered. "They've… activated the Oath Clause. They're testing me."

"What kind of test?!"

Her teeth clenched. "To break my loyalty to you."

The system pinged again:

[Divine Trial Prompt – Elira Valen]

Do you rescind your oath to protect Kai Veyron until death?

Y/N

Her answer came instantly.

N.

And the punishment hit like a storm.

Light blasted upward from her chest, lifting her off the ground. Her body spasmed, caught in a field of divine backlash.

Lira cursed.

Yulia launched a ward to suppress the flare.

Virela didn't move — but her eyes were wide.

Hana, watching from a nearby ridge through a scrying mirror, muttered, "They're pushing too far. Too fast."

Kai held Elira's hand.

Felt it shaking.

Burning.

He shouted at the sky. "She's not your pawn!"

But the gods didn't answer.

They just offered a new prompt:

[Override Option – Hero Intervention Available]

Inject Tether Stone Energy into Target

Result: Trial Cancelled.

Consequence: Forsake Divine Morality Path

Do you wish to use the Tether Stone now?

Y/N

He looked at the stone in his pocket.

The one Zephyr gave him.

The forbidden choice.

It would save Elira.

But it would also cut him off from every shred of divine protection he still had.

He looked at her — the fire in her eyes, the pain twisting her face.

And she smiled at him.

Even now.

Even as she burned.

"Don't," she whispered. "I can take it. I swore."

He shook his head.

"You idiot," he said, voice breaking. "That vow isn't worth your soul."

He made the choice.

Yes.

The Tether Stone disintegrated in his hand, light pouring into Elira's core. Her body dropped, limp, as the trial shattered.

The golden brands on her skin faded. Her breathing steadied.

And she collapsed into Kai's arms.

Alive.

[System Alert: Tether Stone Activated]

Divine Protection: Revoked

Emotional Buffs: Removed

Stability: +30%

Visibility to Divine Entities: Nullified

You are now Unbound.

Warning: The gods are watching.

Later that night, Elira sat beside the fire, pale but steady.

She looked at Kai.

"You shouldn't have used it," she said.

"I wasn't going to let you die for me," he replied.

"I already did," she said quietly.

He turned.

"What?"

Elira's voice cracked just a little. "I gave up everything. My title. My homeland. My crown. Just to follow you."

Kai blinked.

"I know," she said, with a bitter smile. "I'm just another sword in your shadow. But if I had to die again… I would. Without hesitation."

And then she leaned in.

Pressed her forehead to his.

Eyes closed.

"Just don't make me watch you become something I can't follow."

[System Alert: Elira Relationship Deepened]

Bond Level: Sworn Protector

Conflict: Trust Absolute / Fear Rising

Note: She won't betray you…

But she might kill you if you lose yourself.

Elsewhere, Zephyr stood atop a divine tower, staring down at a pool of flickering light.

He had seen the choice.

And he wasn't smiling.

"He chose her," he said quietly.

A voice echoed beside him — female, divine.

"And lost everything else."
