Chapter 56 - Another continent, another heartbeat

INT. JFK AIRPORT – NEW YORK – NIGHT

The cold air bites her skin as Mahi steps onto American soil.

A long coat hugs her figure, her hair tied neatly, her eyes hidden behind glasses.

She looks calm. Composed. Almost unrecognizable from the shattered woman on that highway.

ANNOUNCER (V.O.):

"Welcome to New York City…"

She breathes in — a deep breath. First in weeks.

She's not here to escape.

She's here to rebuild.

---

INT. ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL – NEW YORK – A WEEK LATER

Mahi walks down a bright corridor in a crisp white coat.

Her ID badge gleams: Dr. Mahi Shaikh, Cardio & Trauma Specialist.

Nurses nod to her.

Interns follow her with awe.

She smiles at patients, checks charts, stays calm.

But…

When she sits alone at lunch—

She opens her phone.

Sees no new messages.

She scrolls to a photo once hidden in her deleted folder.

Ahaan.

His arms around her, smiling.

It lingers for a second—

And then she locks the phone.

MAHI (whispers):

"New life. New rules."

---

INT. AHAAN'S APARTMENT – MUMBAI – NIGHT

Ahaan stands on the balcony, staring out at the city.

Empty glass in his hand.

Dark circles under his eyes.

His stubble grown, his shirt wrinkled.

He checks his phone again.

Nothing.

He scrolls through dozens of emails from agents, doctors, orphanage staff…

All dead ends.

Mishri enters. Silent. Holding his meds.

MISHRI:

"She's gone, Ahaan."

AHAAN (quiet):

"She wouldn't leave without telling me…"

MISHRI:

"She already did."

He doesn't argue.

He turns around, walks to the wall, and pins a single paper on it.

A flight record.

One line circled in red:

MAHI SHAIKH – Departed to JFK International, USA.

AHAAN (voice cracking):

"She left the whole country…

And took every piece of me with her."

---

INT. HOSPITAL – NEW YORK – SAME NIGHT

Mahi finishes surgery.

She walks to the roof of the hospital.

Sits down, sipping black coffee.

Alone. Again.

She looks up at the stars.

MAHI (softly):

"You promised me forever, Ahaan.

But you gave me a bullet."

She closes her eyes.

Somewhere in the same world,

they both miss the same moon.

But neither knows the other still cares.
