The next morning arrived with a stillness too deliberate to be natural.
Birds didn't chirp. Leaves barely rustled. Even the breeze seemed to hold its breath.
Sun-Ho opened his eyes before the others stirred. He sat alone beneath a pine tree, sharpening a small dagger—not because he needed it sharp, but because motion calmed the inner fire. Last night's skirmish had proven one thing: the wolves were sniffing the trail.
Behind him, So-Ri stirred. "Couldn't sleep?"
Sun-Ho didn't turn. "I'm starting to wonder if I ever really did."
So-Ri sat beside him without a word. For a moment, only the soft scrape of whetstone against steel filled the air.
Schkkk. Schkkk.
"You're worried," she said.
He nodded. "Yu Mok was a test. But the ones behind him? They don't test twice. They act."
So-Ri's gaze turned to the rising sun. "Then let's act first."

Later that Day – Hidden Forest Path
The party traveled deeper into the region called The Grove of Resonant Roots, known for its strangely echoing terrain. Every footstep bounced off unseen walls. Every whisper returned twofold.
Ma-Rok shifted uncomfortably. "This place gives me the creeps."
"It's said the forest remembers all sounds," Yul-Rin murmured. "Old Murim secrets are buried here."
Ji-Mun grinned. "Then we should whisper carefully."
Yeon tugged lightly at Sun-Ho's sleeve and pointed to a tree with deep claw marks gouged into its bark.
So-Ri frowned. "Those are recent."
Sun-Ho narrowed his eyes. "We're not alone."
Moments later, a figure dropped from the canopy—robes flowing, weapon drawn. Another stepped from the trees, and then another, until five surrounded the party in a loose circle. Unlike assassins, these warriors wore polished uniforms, bearing the emblem of a phoenix entwined with five swords.
A sixth figure arrived with the silence of mist.
Tall, composed, with silver-threaded black robes and eyes like calm fire.
"I am Cho Ryun of the Emerald Sky Sect," he said, bowing slightly. "You are trespassing in territory monitored by our sect."
Master Jang stepped forward. "We travel under no banner. We seek no trouble."
Cho Ryun's gaze landed on Sun-Ho, and he blinked. Just once.
"You…" he said, eyes narrowing. "You're not what you seem."
Ma-Rok stepped forward. "Is that a problem?"
"It might be," Cho Ryun replied smoothly, "if not for the rumors that preceded you."
Ji-Mun sighed. "That again."
Cho Ryun gestured, and his men lowered their weapons.
"We've been observing your party," he admitted. "Not to harm you—only to confirm a suspicion. The masked fighter who's been dismantling rogue sects and exposing corruption… the one they now whisper about as the 'Sovereign of Balance.'"
Yul-Rin whispered, "Already?"
Cho Ryun continued, "I believe he's you."
Sun-Ho didn't flinch. "Then believe as you will."
"No denial?"
"No need."
Cho Ryun chuckled. "You're either very bold or very foolish."
So-Ri crossed her arms. "He's both. But it works."
Cho Ryun smiled faintly. "In that case, let me offer something rare: an alliance."
The party looked up as one.

Alliance Talks Begin
In a cleared grove nearby, Cho Ryun laid out a map of nearby strongholds and movement routes.
"The Emerald Sky Sect is not as large as the Five Great Clans, but we hold firm influence in three provinces. We do not bow to corruption, nor do we involve ourselves in petty succession wars."
Sun-Ho asked, "Why now?"
"Because someone must win. And when they do, we would rather that person be someone we choose, not one chosen by rot and power."
So-Ri narrowed her eyes. "You expect us to trust you?"
Cho Ryun looked to Master Jang. "I trust your master. His hands are cleaner than most."
Jang Cheol-Oh grunted. "Flattery won't buy you tea."
Cho Ryun turned to Sun-Ho. "If you're not the masked warrior, then whoever he is, we wish to offer support. We will say nothing. But we want a seat at the table when the war ends."
Ji-Mun leaned in, whispering to the group, "He's sharp. This isn't a handout—it's a wager."
Sun-Ho nodded. "If the Emerald Sky Sect acts with honor, then I see no reason not to align."
Cho Ryun bowed. "You have our word. And our silence."

Later – By the Fire
Back at camp, the group gathered after the sect emissaries left. Flames flickered across thoughtful faces.
Ji-Mun stirred the pot. "You think we can trust them?"
Yul-Rin replied, "Only as far as they can see gain."
Ma-Rok shrugged. "That's far enough if we steer it right."
So-Ri looked at Sun-Ho. "We're growing. People are choosing sides. Are we ready?"
Sun-Ho thought of Yu Mok. Of Cho Ryun. Of the silent pressure mounting from the Five Great Clans. He exhaled slowly.
"We don't have the luxury of readiness. Only resolve."
Yeon sat silently nearby, sketching something in the dirt: five stars orbiting a central flame.
Sun-Ho smiled at the image.
"Then let's light the sky."
