Ben Tennyson gasped as his eye snapped open and he lurched forward.
He remembered Muspelheim, fighting an army of Fire Demons. He remembered Balder and Heimdall escaping down through the secret exit out of the fire realm. How he was going to stay behind and destroy the gate to prevent the demons from escaping.
The Teen's body stiffened. He remembered falling into that portal. The last thing he saw before everything went white was that giant flaming red hand at the entrance of the portal.
"No!" Ben shouted as he tried to get up. His arms flailed about as he tried to get up.
Only for a firm hand to grab his shoulder and hold him in place.
"Fear not, my friend. Thou art safe." The voice of Balder the Brave said to him.
Ben looked up. Adrenaline surged through his body, causing his vision to blur slightly. Blinking a few times, Balder's smiling face came into focus.
"Truly, I am glad to see thee alive and well." Balder patted the Young Hero on the back. "I feared we had lost you when you chose to face Surtur thyself. Either thou art the bravest mortal in all of Midgard or the most foolish."
The more he talked, the more confused Ben became. How is he being this calm and casual? Ben failed to close the portal. Surtur and his army found it. They could be coming through any second.
"What? No, Balder, we have to move. Surtur and those fire guys were right behind me! We have to stop them! We have to…" Ben tried to get up again, but Balder forced him back down, cutting off his ranting.
"Be at peace, young warrior. We need no longer fear Surtur and his kind." Balder assured.
"Huh?" Ben responded, confused.
Balder chuckled as he released Ben from his grip and moved back to sit on a raised root that was sticking out of the ground behind him.
Now that he was calming down. Ben took notice of the area around him.
For one thing, Ben was lying beneath a large oak tree, next to a pool of water. A shallow natural hot spring surrounded by lush vegetation and multiple pools similar to this one is scattered around it.
To their right sat Heimdall. Who was resting atop the raised root of the tree they were under.
The All-Seer had a fresh set of bandages around his eyes. Slightly damp as it seemed, they were dipped in the waters of the springs.
A look of guilt appeared on the teen's face. It was because of him that Heimdall received those injuries.
"What happened, Balder?" Ben asked the Asgardian. Pushing himself into a sitting position.
"That is what I wished to ask thee," Balder responded. As the Teen tilted his head. "When we saw you remain behind to face the Fire Demons alone, we feared the worst when you did not follow."
"How could I?" came Ben's answer. "They found the secret path. I couldn't just let them follow you guys. Someone had to stay behind and destroy the portal."
This earned a confused look from Balder. On the other hand, Heimdall let out a sigh of disappointment as he rubbed his temples.
"I apologise, Son of Tenny. For it seems our negligence has led you astray." The All-Seer admitted. Much to the Teen's confusion.
Heimdall continued. "We had assumed that you understood. The enchantment that surrounds Muspelheim ensures that only Surtur and his people are confined within the realm. They are unable to pass through the hidden path. Only those from outside the fire realm can pass through."
If Ben's jaw could sink any lower, he's pretty sure it would have hit the roots of Yggdrasil.
Did he just hear that right? Ben almost sacrificed his life and imprisoned himself in Dante's Inferno for absolutely no reason!
Ben let out a groan, and his ears went red from embarrassment, and he leaned so far forward that he was between his knees.
The Egg was most assuredly on his face at this point.
He really did need a vacation from this hero work.
As for his Asgardian buddies, Balder's eye went wide with the revelation, and the Noble Asgardian warrior dropped to his knees and bowed his head to the Young Avenger.
"I beseech thee, Ben Tennyson. Forgive this foolish child of Asgard for leading you astray and putting you in danger." Balder begged. His tone is full of regret and guilt.
Ben immediately raised his head and put his hands up in a placating gesture. "No, dude. It's my fault. I'm the one who jumped to conclusions here."
"Nay, young warrior." Heimdall spoke up. "The fault lies with us. Had we been more forthcoming of the enchantment details. You would not have felt the need to put thyself in danger."
Ben looked between the Asgardians. While he still believed it was his fault for needlessly putting his life at risk. He could see how guilty the two gods were feeling. They really blamed themselves for putting Ben in that situation. Which only made Ben feel more guilty for making them feel guilty.
It made Ben think of the Snake thing that eats its own tail. Round and round they go, only hurting themselves by taking the blame.
Taking a deep breath. Ben stood up and walked over to Balder and placed his hand on the Asgardian's shoulder.
"It's cool, dude. I forgive you."
Balder raised his head. "Truly?"
"Yeah. Water under the bridge." Ben said casually.
In the end, it didn't matter who was to blame. They all made it out of there alive, and everyone has certainly learned their lesson.
"Just promise me one thing." The Teen added. "Let's avoid any more self-sacrificing, ok?"
The Asgardians chuckled as Balder got to his feet. "You have our word, Ben Tennyson."
Balder held out his hand, and Ben shook it without hesitation. He did the same with Heimdall as the All-Seeing Gatekeeper got to his feet.
"So, what's the plan now?" Ben asked.
Even though they are out of Muspelheim, the other Avengers are still scattered across the Nine Realms, and there's still Loki and his plot to take over everything.
They needed a plan.
"Now, Young Warrior. We must prepare for the coming battle." Heimdall said as he raised his axe.
Balder's expression turned grave. "Loki would no doubt be preparing Thor's public execution." He stated with clenched fists.
"With his Dark forces and the power of the Odin Force at his command. We shall need an army of our own to besiege Asgard."
Ben nodded with a determined look of his own. When Heimdall told him that Thor was being kept prisoner by Loki in Asgard. He knew they had to get him out of there.
If they were gonna have any chance of stopping Loki. They needed the God of Thunder by their side.
However, to do that, they needed help.
"If we can find the Avengers, that'll give us the edge," Ben suggested. He knew the other Avengers would jump to the aid of their hammer-throwing teammate. But if they could get others to join. It would undoubtedly increase their chances.
"Verily. But without Heimdall's eyes, tracking down allies will be difficult." Balder explained.
Ben's expression dropped. His mistake having cost them their best chance of coordinating this attack.
"Do not blame yourself, Ben," Heimdall said as if reading Ben's thoughts. "We must not dwell on the past and focus on the path forward."
"Indeed." Balder agreed. "Heimdall and I have been attempting to recall where he last saw our allies. Fortunately, his memory is sharper than his eye."
Heimdall chuckled as he shook his head. Ben even let a small smile spread across his face. Glad that things aren't so bad that they can't have little moments of levity like this.
"With that said. From my recollection, I believe I have determined where our allies are likely to be at this current moment." Heimdall stated.
This earned an excited look from the Young Hero as he quickly got to his feet and clapped his hands together.
"Alright! Let's get going. Let's round up the team," Ben said, ready to head out.
"Hold, Son of Tenny," Balder said calmly. "We cannot be hasty."
Ben mentally smacked himself. Of course, he couldn't rush in. That kind of thinking was what got him into trouble in Muspelheim. He needed to rein in his impulses and heed the Asgardians' advice.
"Sorry, you're right," Ben conceded. "What's the plan?"
Heimdall, though still and visually impaired, held out his hand towards the oasis. "While I am unable to see where our allies are located, we must have means to communicate with them," he explained.
Ben nodded. It made sense. But how would they go about doing that? Did Asgard have its own cell service?
The All-Seer continued, his voice steady. "With the messenger of the gods, Hermod, captured by Loki and Odin's ravens, Munin and Hugin, likely under Loki's control, we must resort to another means of carrying messages."
"Sounds great," Ben stated, nodding along. "So who or what is..."
No sooner had he said that, Heimdall tilted his head, straining to sense the atmosphere around him.
Balder and Ben followed his lead just as the sound of branches rustling and twigs snapping filled their ears.
The Young Hero tensed in response to what he sensed.
A massive beast. Easily as large as an elephant, with jet-black fur over its thin, sleek body, almost like a panther. It boasted a mane of orange and reddish fur around its neck, as well as similar patterns near its lime-green eyes and the base of its long, bushy tail. A single long horn protruded from its head, and it had large buck teeth on its upper and lower jaws.
The large beast seemed to be smiling as it rested casually on its tree branch, letting out a very human-sounding chuckle.
"Well, well, doth my ears deceive me? The great Balder the Brave and the All-Seeing Heimdall. Alive and well. Unless my ears have been deceived by an illusion?" The beast spoke in a mischievous feminine voice.
The creature's attention drifted to Ben, and its interest grew. "And in the company of a Mortal. My, my, how curious. Whispers have reached my ear of the presence of Mortals outside of Midgard."
Ben got to his feet, his hand reaching for the Ultimatrix. While he didn't feel any hostility from the creature, the look in those eyes sent multiple red flags in his head. It was the same kind of look he used to have when he was ten.
If this creature is anything like his ten-year-old self, then he needed to remain on guard.
Heimdall stood up, bowing his head toward the creature with courtesy. "Greetings, fair Ratatoskr. We have need of your services."
The beast, now known as Ratatoskr, rolled her eyes along with her body as she lay on her back, seemingly examining her sharp claws like a bored teenager.
"Is that so? Well, apologies to the *former* keeper of the Bifrost, but I am very busy with the current task the All-Father has entrusted me with for many millennia." Ratatoskr responded in a dismissive tone.
As Heimdall and the Beast talked, Ben leaned over to Balder.
"So, what's with this thing, and why do we need its help?" Ben asked the Asgardian Warrior.
Balder leaned down to whisper to the Teen. "That is Ratatoskr; she is the squirrel that traverses Yggdrasil. Tasked by the All-Father to carry messages exchanged between the Eagle, Agnar, who sits atop the World Tree, and the Dragon, Nidhogg, who dwells at the roots.
Ben glanced at Ratatoskr while she continued to casually dismiss Heimdall's pleas.
"That thing's a Squirrel?" He asked, both shocked and confused. Out of everything, that part stood out to him the most. Out of everything, he would not have pegged the creature before him as an adorable little rodent that buries acorns for the winter and messes with his mother's birdhouses.
"If your feeble, mortal mind is having trouble visualising that form, would this one be more preferable?" Ratatoskr's voice suddenly spoke into Ben's left ear.
Ben jumped as he turned to see a Squirrel on his left shoulder. She looked almost identical to an American Red Squirrel, only she had Asgardian rune-like markings on her back and still had a horn on her head. Only it was much shorter and looked like an adorable little bump on her forehead.
"It is also impolite to speak about someone when she is nearby and possesses superior hearing," she added, her little nose twitching as she sniffed the Teen Hero, starting at his head but then moving down his jacket.
"Um. Sorry, my bad." Ben apologised.
Ratatoskr shrugged as she jumped atop his head. "It cannot be helped. You are a Mortal, after all. So simple-minded, there is hardly anything inside your head."
She then tapped on his head whilst placing her ear to his skull, as if implying it was hollow.
Ben immediately tried to grab the Asgardian Squirrel. But she swiftly jumped off his head and returned to her original form and place in the tree before Ben's hands could get close.
The Young Hero glared at the Magical Rodent. She was starting to get on his nerves.
Before he could say anything, Balder stepped in. "Cease thy mischief, Messenger. Our time is short, and our patience is thin. Will you aid us in our quest?"
Heimdall stood still, his head turned towards the Squirrel awaiting her response.
Ratatoskr casually sighed as she climbed down the tree in very smooth movements, almost like she was gliding, and approached the trio.
Balder instinctively grabbed his sword hilt while Heimdall tightened his grip on his axe. Though blind, he relied on his other senses to gauge the situation. Ben wasn't sure what to do if they needed her help; acting aggressively wouldn't win them any favours, no matter how obnoxious she was.
"As I said. I am too busy to be someone else's messenger. Truly, without me transporting the messages between Agnar and Nidhogg, how will the World Tree survive?" Ratatoskr declared in an apathetic manner as she walked over to the trio.
She reached into her mane and produced a small rolled-up parchment, which she handed to Ben.
The Teen Hero tentatively took the parchment and unfolded it.
It was written in Ancient Asgardian runes. Which Ben would normally have no clue how to read.
Thankfully, the Ultimatrix's universal translator automatically translates any language, written or spoken, into English for him to understand.
However, it seems the watch's translator must be on the fritz. Because there was no way this translation was accurate.
"Thou sucketh?" Ben said with a little snort escaping his nose.
No way this was accurate. Two mythical beings older than most civilisations, and the best insult they could throw at each other was this.
As if reading his mind, Ratatoskr reclaimed the parchment. "They've been arguing with each other for several millennia. After the first few, it becomes difficult to continue being creative."
Ben shrugged and nodded. It was a fair point. Even he would find coming up with something original a challenge after that long.
"If it were up to me, I believe they should admit their love to each other and end this vexing charade." The Mystical Squirrel said offhandedly.
Ben raised an eyebrow. "Huh?"
Heimdall scoffed at her comment. "Pay it no mind, Ben Tennyson. It is for this reason she is known as the Storyteller. The tales Ratatoskr weaves when she is bored. More often than not, she has almost been the cause of several wars."
Ratatoskr giggled in a cheeky manner. "Oh, how mean you can be, Gatekeeper. Tis, not my fault that those in the other realms choose to misconstrue my words."
Ben scoffed at the squirrel's attitude. With the way Ratatoskr is behaving, it's a wonder why she isn't working with Loki if this is how she behaves.
"Are we sure we need her help?" Ben asked the Asgardians.
Ratatoskr smirked before feigning offence. "Oh, so the mortal deems me unworthy of his precious time? I find such rudeness rather unbecoming. I recall a time when mortals exhibited manners and honoured my presence with their offerings."
She then walked up to Ben until she was looking down at him with a very smug expression.
"Perhaps, I may be inclined to offer my aid should the mortal show proper tribute," Ratatoskr said. She raised her front right paw and pointed one of her claws to the ground in front of her.
"Bow to me, Mortal. Ask for my forgiveness and beg for my help." A sadistic grin pulled at her mouth, displaying her buck teeth. "And be sincere about it. I'll know if you attempt to deceive me."
The vein in Ben's head almost burst as the Teen Hero reached his limit. This arrogant rodent expected him to grovel at her feet, when she's acted like a spoiled brat this entire time.
Ben has met his fair share of stuck-up, obnoxious and condescending jerks in his life. Which includes himself for a lot of it. But this chick, she takes the cake.
He reached for his Ultimatrix and activated it, glaring at the Mystical Squirrel with irritation.
"How's about I pluck that tail off you and use it to dust my shoes, you buck-toothed rat." He spat at Ratatoskr.
Balder looked nervous while Heimdall had a slight smirk.
"Ben, need I remind you that we need her as an ally. Is your pride worth the fate of the Nine Realms?"
He had a point. Ben knew that. He knew he shouldn't let this snide Acorn Muncher to get under his skin and just suck it up and do what she wants.
But Ben knew her type. He could see it in her eyes. Give her an inch and she will take a mile. Even if he did what she wanted. It's likely she'll think up something else for him to do and dangle her help like a carrot on a stick.
It wasn't about pride or ego. It was about standing up for himself and showing Ratatoskr that he was not someone she wanted to mess with.
Ratatoskr's eyes narrowed as she leaned towards Ben. Her snout inches from his face as she snorted in his face. His hair flickered in the breeze that escaped her nostrils.
Balder attempted to intervene, but Heimdall stopped him. Things were already tense enough without the Warrior getting in the middle of things.
"You wish to test my patience, Mortal?" Ratatoskr threatened as her claws dug into the earth. "Then let us see how well you…"
Suddenly, Ratatoskr stopped, her nose twitching. She took a deep inhale as her tail twitched and her body stiffened.
Before Ben could question her actions, her head suddenly pushed against him as she shoved her nose into his abdomen. Her large nose sniffed him like a dog catching the scent of food.
"What is that?" Ratatoskr asked enthusiastically. Her body was more forceful as she almost knocked Ben off his feet.
"What are you..?" Ben tried to ask, only for Ratatoskr to poke his stomach harder, causing him to wheeze.
"That delectable aroma. What is it?" Ratatoskr asked again, growing more excited as she pushed him.
Putting all his strength in his arms, Ben managed to push himself away from the giant squirrel, only for her to force herself on him again.
In that brief moment, Ben could see that she was aiming for the left pocket of his jacket.
With one more push, he finally managed to get her off him.
Ratatoskr sat on the floor with her back straight and front paws on the ground. Her tail twitched from side to side as she licked her lips. Like a dog waiting to be fed.
Now that Ben had some breathing room, he reached into his pocket to see what had caused her to suddenly go feral like that.
His hand came into contact with something crumply and squishy. The Teen Hero pulled the item out of his pocket, and his eyes widened.
He had completely forgotten about these. In his hand was a small packet of peanut butter cups.
Growing up, Ben was allergic to peanuts, which always caused him problems. But that all changed when the Ultimatrix software was upgraded. Its ability to repair genetic material fixed that little flaw in Ben's genes. Now, Ben can chow down on them as much as he wants.
The Teen had been working through a list of all the treats he couldn't eat growing up to make up for lost time. His recent discovery is peanut butter cups.
He had forgotten that he had put a packet in his pocket for a mission snack before leaving the mansion. With how long some missions take, Ben gets hungry, and there is either no time to get taken out or there is nothing for miles, and he hates fighting on an empty stomach.
So he packs a few snacks with him to chow down on, just in case.
Course, this snack proved to be the wrong choice for this mission. From the way it squished and flopped in his hand, it's pretty obvious that the chocolate and peanut butter melted while he was in the volcano and Muspelheim.
He could still eat them, but it would be like sucking on a tube of toothpaste.
The sound of paws tapping the ground drew his attention away from the molten chocolate to see Ratatoskr eyeing the orange wrapper like a vulture. A small trail of drool flowed from the corner of her mouth as she pawed the ground in excitement.
Ben looked at her and then at the wrapper in his hand. He looked back at the ebony-furred squirrel with a mischievous grin.
"Oh, what's this?" He said in a playful tone, holding up the wrapper and shaking it like a chew toy. "You want this, girl? Is this what you want?"
Ratatoskr nodded enthusiastically as she lowered her head to the wrapper. Just as she was about to snap it up, Ben pulled his hand away.
"Mortal, that scent. What manner of delectable nectar is this?" She asked, her desperation growing.
"What's this?" Ben held up the treat. "These are just some peanut butter cups. A rare delicacy on Earth. Not many people can get their hands on these."
Heimdall smirked at the Teens' deceit. Having turned his gaze to Midgard many times during his watch. He knows for a fact that the sweet treat he is holding can be acquired in abundance in that realm.
But he will keep his mouth shut and allow the Young Warrior to put this childish miscreant in her place.
"I must have it! Give it to me!" The Magical Squirrel demanded as she tried to reach for the candy, but Ben sidestepped her.
"Uh Ah. No swiping." Ben asked. "Tell ya what. I'll let you have this one. And if you help us, I promise to bring you more. And in better quality than this one."
For a moment, Ratatoskr seemed poised to agree to the terms without hesitation. However, it seems her rational mind managed to retake control as she pulled back and composed herself.
Ben clenched his jaw, but kept his smile up. Couldn't break the visage.
"An interesting proposition," Ratatoskr said before her cheeky grin returned. "But are you sure I cannot offer you something else in exchange?"
The Teen Hero felt an uneasy tingle roll up his spine.
Suddenly, Ratatoskr's form changed as she morphed into a beautiful humanoid woman. She had the same markings around her eyes, but they appeared to be eye makeup. Her long, silky raven-black hair featured a yellow and orange strand that ran down the front. She had sharp green eyes and full black lips.
She wore a black, furry bodysuit that accentuated her perfect hourglass figure, paired with a pair of black gloves featuring orange fur around the forearms. She had thick fur around her shoulders, giving her a winter coat-like appearance.
Ratatoskr approached Ben with a sultry look in her eyes. She leaned in close and ran her fingers across his collar before sliding it under his chin.
"I take care of those who treat me nicely, Mortal." Her breath tickled his ear. "Feed me and I will do anything you desire."
Ben takes pride in the number of times that attractive women have flirted with him. While there were times he found it annoying in his old universe. Most of the time, being treated like a rock star with beautiful women throwing themselves at his feet. It was quite the ego boost.
However, he never thought for a second that he'd be hit on by a magical Squirrel. That certainly was not on his bingo card.
"My name is Ben, Ben Tennyson." The Alien Avenger said calmly as he removed her finger. "Also, I'm seeing someone. So, how about we stick to the deal? If not, I can always eat this myself, and you'll never get another chance to get it."
Ratatoskr nervously bit her lip and tapped her fingers together. She watched as Ben took the packet and opened it. A sweet aroma wafted from the bag and into her nose. Such a heavenly scent that not even the sweetest fruits of Yggdrasil could produce.
The Teen Hero lifted the bag close to his lips. The Ebony Squirrel watched as her prize was about to be ripped from her grasp.
"Oh, very well!" She yelled.
Ben stopped and smirked. Hook, line and sinker.
"You have bested me. I shall carry your message to the other realms." Ratatoskr conceded. "So long as you give me that rare delicacy."
The Alien Avenger did his best to avoid gloating. But no amount of restraint could contain that smug grin of his.
"Sure thing. Deals a deal." He said, tossing the wrapper to her.
Quick as lightning, Ratatoskr snatched the candy bar from the air and immediately chowed down. At first, Ben was worried she'd eat the wrapper along with the chocolate. But it seems she was smart enough to avoid that.
Ratatoskr let out a squeak of enjoyment as she cupped her cheek in her hand, savouring the flavour.
"Sweet nectar!" She squealed. "Truly, the dining halls of Valhalla would envy this delectable treat!"
Ben grinned as he crossed his arms. He had to admit. When she wasn't acting all high and mighty, Ratatoskr can be kind of cute.
When she was finished, she had licked the wrapper clean. Once she was sure she had gotten every last piece of the candy, Ratatoskr composed herself.
"Now then. As agreed, what message would you like me to deliver, and where am I delivering it?" She asked in a professional manner, which took Ben slightly off guard.
Heimdall then told her the message and the specific locations she was to go.
Once he was finished explaining, she confirmed that she understood everything. Ratatoskr transformed back into her true form and prepared to leave.
But not before whipping her tail around Ben and bringing him up to her eye level. The fur was as soft and fluffy as Ben thought.
"I trust you will remember our deal, Ben Tennyson," Ratatoskr said in a serious tone.
Ben nodded with a cheerful smile. "Yep. Anytime I'm visiting, I'll bring you some more Peanut butter cups. Scouts honour." He said with a Boy Scouts salute.
"I will be holding you to that."
"Hey, you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours," Ben replied.
The pair locked eyes, neither one of them blinking as if daring each other to try something.
But Ben could see in her eyes that she was gonna keep her end of the deal, and Ratatoskr felt the same as they smirked at each other, and the Asgardian squirrel placed him down before vanishing in a black blur.
Running off to deliver the message. Moving at speeds that would give Jetray and XLR8 a run for their money.
"So… She is gonna hold up her end of the deal, right?" Ben asked the All-Seeing Heimdall.
Out of them, the two Asgardians would have a better understanding of her character than he would.
Given how mischievous and troublesome she seemed, he wasn't sure if she could be trusted to keep her promise. The promise of some peanut butter cups didn't really seem like enough incentive for an immortal being.
Heimdall chuckled. "Ratatoskr is many things. But a fool is not one of them. She knows, more than most, how Loki's plans will spell disaster for the World Tree. Despite her claims, she does not wish to see the Nine Realms fall."
Ben crossed his arms and scoffed. "Yeah, bet she'll get real bored without anyone to mess with."
"Is it not customary for mortals to insult those with whom you are close with as a form of affection?" Heimdall asked with a knowing grin.
The Teen wanted to argue. But the All-Seer did have a point.
"Ok, fair," Ben admitted.
"Besides, it seems you have made an impression on her. Ratatoskr will not be quick to betray a new friend."
Ben chuckled. "Friends, huh. Is that what we are?"
"The bonds of friendships can be forged anywhere, Young Warrior," Balder stated. "Be it in a battle of blades or words. You can find an ally in the most unlikely of places."
Thinking it over, the Alien Avenger nodded in agreement. However, only time will tell whether he will start considering the Magical Squirrel as a friend.
But weirder things have happened in his life. So who knows?
A few minutes later, the trio was met with the sudden return of Ratatoskr.
"Rejoice! For I have returned." She greeted with self-grandeur.
Balder swiftly jumped to his feet. "What news do you bring, fair Squirrel?"
Ratatoskr turned her gaze to Heimdall first. "Gatekeeper. I bring word from thy sister, Lady Sif. She has expressed joy in the knowledge of your safety."
Ben looked to the All-Seer as he smiled warmly at the news.
"And, Ben, your sister sends her regards as well." Ratatoskr informed him.
Upon hearing that, Ben looked at her with surprise. "You saw Janet?"
Ratatoskr nodded. "Indeed, as well as many of your other mortal allies. However, I cannot say that I enjoy the presence of one who bears the blessing of an Ennead in Yggdrasil.
A look of disgust appeared on her face as she said that. This confused Ben, as he wondered who she was referring to.
"It matters not, Ratatoskr," Balder spoke up as he stepped forward. "Will they aid us in the coming battle?"
"Indeed, Balder the Brave," Ratatoskr confirmed.
"She speaks the truth." Heimdall concurred. Looked out to the distance. "Our allies prepare for battle as we speak. Come the dawn, we make for the gates of Asgard."
Balder and Ben nodded in agreement. Determined looks on their faces. The Alien Teen then glanced at the Ebony Squirrel.
"Don't suppose you'll be joining us?" He asked, though he had a feeling that he already knew the answer.
Ratatoskr giggled in response. "Surely you jest, Ben Tennyson? I have no stake in this battle. Nor do I owe any favours to Asgard and its King."
"But if you help save Asgard. They will owe you a favour." Ben pointed out.
In response, the Magical Squirrel scoffed and shook her head. "Oh, how naïve you are, Ben Tennyson. The All-Father is not as charitable as you think. Nor are his followers."
"What do you mean by that?" Ben asked, raising an eyebrow.
In response. Ratatoskr smiled softly and gently brushed her tail against his head. "You are young. You will learn." She started to walk away, turning her head to glance at him one more time.
"Do not perish in battle, Ben Tennyson. For even in death, I will not allow you to break your word."
Ben chuckled as he put his hands on his hips and puffed out his chest. "Please. I'm Ben Tennyson. I've faced way worse guys than Loki."
"We shall see," Ratatoskr responded in an ominous tone.
A flick of her tail, and she was gone. Rushing off somewhere into Yggdrasil.
Ben looked at where she stood for a second, thinking about her warning. But he couldn't focus on that now. He needed to mentally prepare for the fight.
He turned to the others as he pulled back his sleeve. "Ok. Let's do this." He said. Feeling pumped up and ready for this showdown.
"Loki will want to make Thor's execution a grand spectacle." Balder sneered through his teeth.
"Which means he will have it take place at the sun's peak," Heimdall added.
"So, midday." Ben summed up. "A few hours from now."
"Thanks to Ratatoskr, the others will be ready when it is time to strike," Balder said. His spirit returned to him as he drew his blade and examined it.
Heimdall then sat down on a rock and rested his axe beside him, removing his helmet.
"For now, we must rest and gather our strength. We shall need it for the coming battle."
Ben wanted to protest. After all, the fate of the Nine realms is at stake, not to mention Thor's life on the line. Resting was the last thing on his mind.
But Heimdall did have a point. If he didn't rest, he wouldn't be at his best when the fighting starts.
Sitting down at the edge of the hot spring, Ben looked up at the sky. The light of the sun allowed him to see the branches of Yggdrasil in the distance.
He wonders what the others are up to right now. Knowing them, they would be just as restless as he is. Wanting to do anything they possibly could to get ready for the coming fight.
The Young Avenger was not far off. For across the Nine Realms, the Avengers prepared for war.
In Nidavellir, smoke bellowed from the Forge of the Dwarves. A massive mechanical city that seemed to be a mix of ancient architecture and Industrial Revolution machinery.
Gears clicked and pipes hissed as trolleys filled with the magical metal Uru are transported to the central forge.
The furnaces blazed, and the sound of metal on metal clanged throughout the forge.
At the very heart of it all. Tony Stark stood in front of a cauldron filled with molten metal.
He wore welder's goggles over his eyes, removed his undersuit, and was now sporting a white sleeveless undershirt and thick brown pants, which the dwarves were kind enough to provide him. He also wore thick gloves with metal plates on the back and runes carved into them.
The Arc reactor in his chest was exposed and glowed against the light of the forge.
Tony reached up and pulled on the chain next to him. The pulley system clicked as the cauldron tipped and poured the molten metal into the mould in front of him.
There, Tony cooled the metal before walking over to a workbench and reaching for the hammer.
The tool was larger than the tools he was used to. With a solid metal head. Usually, he would have trouble lifting something like this. But thanks to the gloves he wore. The runes apparently held an enchantment that allowed him to lift the hammer like it was nothing.
Tony didn't concern himself with the details on how this was possible, as he was focused on the task at hand.
Earlier, a giant Squirrel with a horn on its head dropped by, claimed it knew Ben and that he was going to attack Asgard to save Thor and stop Loki.
With the relief that everyone is alive and the timetable set, Tony got to work on his latest project.
He raised his hammer and slammed it down on the glowing metal. Sparks erupted, and a loud clank rang in his ears.
This sensation, this work, it all felt so nostalgic to him. The last time he did this kind of work. He was merely building a means to save himself from captivity.
Now, he was doing this to save another world.
With each strike of the hammer, Tony thought about each armor he constructed since that day.
BANG.
He saw the Mark 1 Armor. The first suit he created.
BANG.
He saw the Mark 2. Its sleek silver design.
BANG. BANG. BANG. He went.
Each time, he saw his suits. Appearing before him like a vision of his past. Their figures towered over him as he hammered away as if watching him give birth to his next creation.
With the metal hammered out. Tony tempered it in burning coals, allowing it to harden and remove the impurities.
Once it was ready, he removed the metal with tongs and set it down on another workbench, where Eitri the Dwarf King waited. His own hammer in hand.
The pair set to work striking the metal in turns. Shaping it to its desired form.
Tony had no experience with Uru and knew nothing about how to properly forge it. Eitri offered his assistance, both as a gesture of thanks for saving his life and for the excitement of undertaking a new project.
The pair worked tirelessly for hours on end, crafting each individual piece themselves and binding it together.
As Eitri worked on another piece of the armor. Tony removed another piece of metal from the coals. The Industrialist walked over to a tub filled with oil.
Tony slowly slid the glowing metal into the oil vat. The surface immediately burst into flames and bubbled as he submerged the metal to quench it.
After a few more seconds, Tony removed the metal. Steam flowed from the cooled grey Uru as he walked over to the workbench where Eitri was still working.
The Dwarf King hammered the metal plate as Tony placed the metal he had worked on on the end of the table before him.
Eitri raised his head to see what Tony had finished. The faceplate of the armor.
From the angle he was holding it and the light of his arc reactor reflecting off the table, through the eyes of the faceplate.
The two metalworkers looked at each other and nodded, their faces breaking into satisfied grins.
In Alfheim, a secret enclave of Light Elves was rushing around their campsite. At the centre was a large wooden sailing ship. However, the boat wasn't on the water. It was floating a few feet off the ground.
It had a long streamlined shape, resembling a catamaran sailing boat with two stabilising wings on both sides and a rudder at the back. It had a single mast with a large white sail featuring blue stripes and a golden crest at its centre.
Around the ship, a group of Light Elves prepared their weapons and gear for the coming battle.
Among them, Hawkeye and Black Panther were also getting ready.
The pair were brought by their elf friend Faraday, who vouched for them when they met with a hostile reception.
After being accepted and getting the message from Ben, the pair quickly got to work along with the elves.
Hawkeye was given a pair of elven vambraces from Faraday along with his golden bow, and loaded up his quiver with as many magic arrows as he could fit in there.
As for Black Panther, the Wakandan King felt that his weapons were enough for him. He did not wish to be rude to the elves and accepted a dagger from them. Sliding the magical blade into his belt next to his vibranium daggers.
With all their gear ready, the pair boarded the ship and prepared to set sail.
Hulk sat quietly as he gripped his Bloodaxe in his hands. The gamma giant glared as his own reflection in the axe's blade.
He sat atop a hill overlooking the vast fields of Vanaheim. Behind him, a group of Asgardians had set up a temporary campsite where they readied weapons, armor, and made battle plans and other boring stuff.
Leading the group were three Asgardian Warriors. One of them is Volstagg, the fat warrior, who chatted with his friends with a chicken leg in one hand and a mug of mead in the other.
On his right was a man with short, slightly curly blonde hair and a blonde goatee. He wears a green doublet and trousers with swashbuckler boots and carries a long, slender sword at his hip.
He is Fandral the Dashing.
To Volstagg's left was a man with dark hair and a moustache that covered his upper lip and extended past his chin. He wore blue clothes with a hooded cloak wrapped around his upper torso and a white, fur-rimmed headpiece featuring a pair of short black horns at the front. He wielded a metal mace with a pair of vambraces on his forearms, with daggers sheathed in them.
He is known as Hogun the Grim.
Together with Volstagg, they are the Warriors Three. A group of the finest warriors in Asgard.
After Hulk saved them and many Asgardian prisoners from a small army of Ogres, the Warriors welcomed the Gamma Giant with open arms.
The trio were devising a plan of attack. Many of the Asgardians who were imprisoned with them were women and children. The Warriors were deciding who among them would go to Asgard to battle and who would remain behind to guard the rest.
While many agreed that the Warriors Three should be on the front lines, the rest needed to be sorted. With many eager young warriors wanting to prove themselves in battle.
Hulk glanced at the Warriors. He saw Fandral surrounded by several women, giving each of them a dashing grin as he bid them farewell. The way he acted made Hulk think of Iron Man and how he flirts with women, or Ben and how he seems to attract them like moths to a flame.
Hogun stood to the side with a scowl on his face. Hulk didn't think that this guy smiled once the entire time he's known him. Or said a single word. Honestly, Hulk kinda liked him the most out of the three.
He then noticed Volstagg speaking to an Asgardian woman who seemed just as stout as he is. With several children around them.
The voluminous man kissed the woman and then patted and hugged the children around him.
It didn't take him long to realise that this was the man's wife and children. From the look his wife was giving Volstagg, it's clear she is worried about him, and from the way the Warrior hugged his children one by one. The entire scene bore a resemblance to that of a soldier going off to war.
With the father not sure if he was going to return.
The Gamma Giant turned away from the scene and looked at the axe in his hand. His green eyes stared back at him. His expression hardened as Hulk gritted his teeth.
No matter what happens. Everyone is making it home today.
The Valkyrie training camp of Konurlifandi, the shield maidens, was ready for battle.
Each one astride a pegasus as they formed ranks and prepared to ride out.
At the head of the formation was the proud and noble leader of the Valkyrior, Brunnhilde. Wearing her armor, her sword on her hip, and a spear in her hand.
Though she was not riding alone. Sitting behind her is Giant-Man. The size-changing hero is wearing silver armor on his chest, forearms, and legs, which has been specially crafted to fit his suit perfectly.
Next to her is Lady Sif, with her own passenger, Wasp. Who is also wearing armor, consisting of a helmet, a golden shoulder guard, arm guards, and leg guards.
The size-changing heroine sat on Sif's shoulder in her shrunken form. She turned to Hank and smiled.
Giant Man returned the grin as they readied themselves for the fight.
Meanwhile, in the Golden City of Asgard. An air of dread hung over the realm eternal.
Inside the palace, the God of Mischief and false King of Asgard, Loki, had the biggest grin on his face.
Today is going to be the greatest day of his immortal life. The day he finally ends the line of Odin once and for all.
Despite taking the Odinforce from the All-Father, his army took over Asgard and each of the free realms of Yggdrasil. The people still wouldn't accept him as their king.
Because they were waiting for the prodigal son, the true heir to Asgard's throne, to return.
Even when he had abandoned them for Midgard, the people still adored Thor over him.
Well, no longer. After today, the Nine Realms will know him as the one true All-Father.
Loki held up his arms as an Ogre walked up to him and placed a red cloak over his shoulders. At the same time, another walked over and put a golden crown over his helm.
With a malicious grin, the God of Mischief looked to his right at the bed of the sleeping Odin.
The wise and all-powerful, All-Father. Brought down by the child he deemed inferior, and lied to all these years.
Loki walked down the halls, and his Troll guards opened the doors into the courtyard. Where Loki was met with a glorious sight. Surrounding the walls were several Frost Giants, accompanied by Ogres, Trolls and the few Asgardian Warriors that pledged their loyalty to him.
Filling the courtyard were the citizens of Asgard. Those who could not flee the city were forced to bend to his rule.
The crowd all looked on with fear and dread, their eyes fixed on the raised platform at the base of the staircase.
For before them, chained like an animal and kneeling before the chopping block. Is Thor, God of Thunder.
Loki's glee was immeasurable as he would soon dispose of this blithering Oaf. Then there will be no one to stand in his way.
The Sun approached its Zenith. Only half an hour until midday.
"It is time," Heimdall said, his voice steady as he gazed into the distance, although his eyes were concealed beneath a blindfold.
The All-Seer looked rejuvenated despite his blindness. His armor shone bright, and the edge of his axe glinted in the sunlight, a promise of power and protection.
Beside him stood Balder. The God of Light must have been using some of his power, as his armor sparkled like the stars, drawing his sword as his cape fluttered in the gentle breeze.
Finally, Ben stood with them, his green jacket appearing brighter than usual as he raised the Ultimatrix.
They were cutting it close. According to the others, this was the best moment to strike; Loki's guard would be at its lowest.
Yet, Ben wasn't entirely convinced. Even if Loki was the typical cocky, overzealous egomaniac that Heimdall and Balder described, he was still the God of mischief and tricks. Wouldn't someone cunning enough to deceive everyone in Asgard be prepared for an ambush?
But it didn't matter now. Whatever curveballs awaited them, Ben would have to adapt.
He glanced down at his watch and took a deep breath.
"Easy, Tennyson," he reminded himself. "You faced off against the Phoenix Force. You've totally got this."
He raised his head as Heimdall, with exquisite precision, raised his axe.
The Gatekeeper gripped his weapon firmly, focusing intensely. Swinging the blade in a wide arc, he conjured powerful magic that sent waves of energy rippling through the air.
The winds picked up, and the steam from the springs began to flow in front of them. The water vapour refracted the light, producing a dazzling rainbow that formed a beautiful arc before them.
With another swing of his axe, Heimdall made the rainbow shimmer and move. One end connected to the ground at his feet, while the other end seemed to vanish into the sky.
Heimdall planted the hilt of his axe at the base of the rainbow, causing the multicoloured arch to glow, the colours solidifying into something tangible.
With serene confidence, he lifted his right foot, moved it over the rainbow, and stepped forward.
He landed on the literal solid rainbow.
Despite having heard about it, Ben still felt a rush of awe at witnessing it in person.
The Bifrost, the Rainbow Bridge. Physically, before him.
Even as Balder stepped onto the solid light spectrum, Ben hesitated for a moment. But as he took his own step onto the bridge, he found it as solid as any ground he had ever walked on, warm and pulsating with a radiant energy.
He followed Heimdall and Balder up the rainbow bridge, starting with a brisk walk that quickly turned into a jog, before bursting into a full sprint.
Ahead, the Bifrost transformed into a swirling portal, filled with vibrant rainbow energy.
Without any hesitation, the trio charged through the portal, ready to confront whatever awaited them on the other side.
Outside the city of Asgard, the Rainbow Bridge flowed from the main gates of the Golden City. Extending out into the void of space.
From this distance, the Realm of Asgard looked like an island floating in the middle of space.
Upon the Bifrost stood a legion of Loki's forces. Many of them are familiar faces of the Nine Realms. Frost Giants, Ogres, Trolls, Asgardian Wolves and Asgardians loyal to Loki. But among the ranks were creatures that weren't usually associated with Norse mythology, such as the Cyclops and the Minotaur.
Most were on foot, while some rode atop animal mounts. Some of the Frost Giants rode atop gargantuan Ice Bears. Which resembled polar bears in their appearance, only they were massive beasts where a Frost Giant could easily ride atop one.
Others simply rode horses or wolves, which had agreed to allow their fellow warriors to ride them.
The small army stood guard at the Bifrost. Tasked by Loki to stand guard and prevent any rebel forces from attacking the city.
Suddenly, a portal opened on the Rainbow Bridge, and the Dark Forces readied their weapons.
A Frost Giant stepped forward and raised his Ice Club.
"The Bifrost Bridge is opening." The Giant announced as a grin formed on his lips. "More rebel warriors to crush!"
The other warriors shared the same level of excitement. It's been a while since anyone attempted an attack. They've been craving for more desperate rebels to slaughter.
However, what they did not expect was an Ogre to emerge from the portal, wielding a battle axe, to come charging out of the portal.
With a mighty roar, the Green Goliath swung his axe and shattered the Frost Giant's weapon before proceeding to punch the Giant in the face with enough force to send him flying off his feet and hurtling into the mass of his fellow warriors.
Many of the smaller warriors had to dive out of the way to avoid being crushed by his colossal body.
The Dark Forces turned to see the Incredible Hulk land on the Rainbow Bridge, the Bloodaxe in his hand as he glared at the Evil Warriors and snarled.
"You want to crush something? Try me!" Hulk roared.
The closest Frost Giant, riding an Ice Bear, stomped towards the Hulk. His sword raised, and his steed bearing its fangs at the Gamma Giant.
"Have at thee, giant!" Another voice called out, causing the Giant to look up as more emerged from the portal.
A squadron of thirteen chariots, pulled by a pair of horse-sized goats, flew out of the portal. Most were being ridden by two Asgardians, with the exception of the three up front. The leading three were commanded by the Warriors Three.
Volstagg drew his great sword and leapt from his chariot as it flew over the Frost Giant. With a mighty yell, the Large Asgardian Warrior landed atop the giant's head. His bulk was enough to topple the Jotun from his steed and sent him crashing to the ground.
The Ice Bear roared as it stood on its hind legs and swiped its paw at Hogun's chariot, destroying the vehicle. Still, the Grim Warrior easily recovered and used the descent to dive at another Frost Giant, raising his mace and striking the Giant's jaw at full force. Knocking it off balance and providing an opening for Frandral to drive his chariot directly into the Frost Giant's head. The goats pulled his cart, rammed into his head, and sent him tumbling to the ground.
Hulk turned his attention to the Ice Bear as it glared at the Gamma Giant with savage eyes. Drool flowed from between its teeth as it let out a thunderous roar and lunged at the Hulk.
The Gamma Brute roared back as he leapt into the air, avoiding the Bear's jaws as he raised his axe over his head. Hulk then dropped down on top of the Beast, swinging his axe with all his might. The enchanted blade slices into the creature's skull, killing it with one fell swoop.
As the beast's body dropped to the ground, Hulk stomped over its corpse as the Warriors Three and the rest of their strike force gathered together. Some Asgardians dismounted their chariots, while others remained in them.
A force of twenty Asgardian Warriors, armed and ready for war.
Before them, Loki's forces gathered together.
At the front of the group was an Asgardian man wearing red and gold armor, with a golden helmet on his head and two curved horns on either side. He wielded a one-sided battle axe in one hand and a large shield in the other.
The Shield was a broad, square-shaped metal shield featuring a symbol crafted on the front that resembled an H.
"By Loki's decree. Those who do not bow before him will be executed." The Lead Warrior announced to the small band of rebels. "Surrender!"
In response, the Warriors Three all glared at the Warrior and his men, all of whom wore similar armor to him. Then to the army of monsters that stood behind them.
"Traitors!" Fandral yelled at the Warriors. "We will never bow to Loki."
Of all things they have faced. What truly angered the Asgardian Trio was seeing their fellow Asgardians. Warriors they fought side by side with, the same ones they shared many a meal with and drank with until their bellies were full.
To see those they once called friends betray them and side with Loki.
That is something they cannot stand. The same can be said for their fellow warriors.
However, before they could say anything else, Hulk let out a mighty roar and charged toward the enemy lines.
The Gamma Giant had had enough of all this talk. He had taken down only one monster so far. There were still plenty more for him to smash.
"Mortal, wait!" Fandral warned, but it was too late.
Just as Hulk got close to the Lead Warrior, the warrior raised his shield as Hulk swung his axe against it.
The enchanted weapons collided, and suddenly, a pulse of mystical energy burst from the shield, sending Hulk flying off his feet.
The dashing warrior tried to warn him. That is no ordinary shield; it belongs to Heimdall, who used it to defend the Bifrost against all who would invade Asgard.
With their green ally taken down, Loki's forces charged at the small band of Asgardian rebels.
The Warriors Three attempted to hold their ranks as the dark forces surged forward.
In a panic, their chariots charged ahead to break their ranks. However, the goats were taken out by a pair of wolves, and an ogre swung a warhammer, dispatching the rider with ease.
The rest of the Warriors quickly became overwhelmed by the evil army, with the Warriors Three doing their best to fend off the monsters but rapidly losing ground.
Suddenly, a mighty roar echoed from the back lines as Hulk returned to the fray. Raising his axe, the Hulk gripped the blade, which glowed red, and he swung the axe, unleashing a wave of fire from the magic weapon.
The flames formed a wall of fire that separated the Asgardians from most of the monster army. Giving the Warriors some breathing room as they engaged and defeated the monsters attacking them.
Ever since acquiring the weapon, Hulk has been training with it, trying to figure out how to use its magic powers. He didn't really understand how it worked, but it seemed that in order to use the elemental powers, he just had to focus on the element he wanted, and the axe responded. But he still can't figure out how to open portals like the Executioner did.
Still, the fire and ice powers were useful.
Hulk landed in the midst of some monsters and knocked them away from one of the Asgardians. Punching one away before slashing another with his axe.
The Gamma Giant glared at the Dark Army. While he felt bad for jumping the gun, he couldn't focus on that right now. There are still monsters to smash, and he couldn't stop now.
Thor is in trouble, and these things are in his way.
As the Green Brute and Warriors Three prepared to defend against another attack. A portal opened up in the sky above them.
Suddenly, yellow energy bolts rained down on the attacking monsters. The creatures cried out in pain as the bolts knocked them down.
Hulk grinned as he looked up to see Wasp flying out of the portal, followed by a dozen Valkyries on their Winged Horses.
As they flew over, Giant-Man jumped from the back of Brunnhilde's steed and grew to his giant form, landing on the rainbow bridge and proceeding to kick several Ogres away with his massive foot.
From the front of the group, Lady Sif drew her sword.
"For Asgard!" she cried as the Valkyries descended on the enemy's forces.
Wasp blasted them with her stingers, taking down anyone who was in her line of sight.
The Asgardians on the ground quickly rallied and joined the fray, engaging with the monsters and managing to push them back.
Flying overhead, Brunnhilde steered her Pegasus towards a Frost Giant. She raised her spear and thrust it into the Colossal being's eye, taking it down easily.
However, just as she turned to find her next opponent, the flat side of a giant ice sword collided with her. Knocking her off her winged horse as both plummeted from the sky.
Seeing her fall, Hulk immediately jumped into action. Diving across the sky, he caught the dazed Valkyrie.
He cradled her in his arms as he landed, taking great care not to jostle her around. Brunnhilde groaned as she was still seeing stars.
Hulk looked up as the Frost Giants' shadow passed over him. The Giant raised his sword over his head and brought it down like a lumberjack. Intending to crush the pair with his blade.
The blade struck, kicking up a cloud of icy mist. The ground shook from the impact.
At the mist cleared, and the Frost Giant retracted his blade. The Giant saw Hulk crouching over the wounded Valkyrie. The Gamma Brute having shielded her with his body. A long blue cut stretched from the top of his left shoulder to the edge of his right hip.
The Frost Giants' weapon had not only slashed the Hulk's durable skin, but also given him frostbite on top of it.
However, the wound quickly healed due to Hulk's regenerative healing factor.
The Hulk rolled over and glared at the Giant, who was joined by two more of his kind.
Growling with rage, the Hulk readied his axe and stood in front of Brunnhilde to defend her as the three Frost Giants raised their weapons.
Just then, Giant Man arrived and punched one of the Frost Giants with a powerful right hook. Knocking him down as the second Giant attempted to swing his sword at Size Changing Hero, only for Giant Man to grab his arms and hold back his blow.
The Third Frost Giant turned to help his comrade, taking his attention away from Hulk.
Which worked out great for him, and he prepared to attack the Jotun. However, a cough drew his attention as he looked down to see the Valkyrie he saved, recovering from her blow and getting to her feet.
Hulk reached his hand down to help her up. Only for the Asgardian Woman to push his hand away and glare harshly at him.
"I do not need your help, man. I am a warrior who can fight her own battles." She said confidently.
Hulk gave her a deadpanned look as he grunted in response. "You're welcome, lady."
Brunnhilde scoffed as she drew her sword and charged the last Frost Giant.
Unfortunately, the Giant saw her coming and swung his ice mace at her.
The Valkyrie prepared to dodge the incoming attack, only to pause as Hulk roared overhead and jumped on top of the Frost Giant's head. The Ice Titan only has seconds to witness the Hulk raise his green fist before punching him in the face.
A shockwave erupted from the impact as the Frost Giant fell to the ground like a tree that's been cut down.
Brunnhilde sneered as she watched Hulk stomp towards her.
"I said I did not need thee to…"
"You wanna smash the monsters?" Hulk barked back at her, cutting her off. "Then you better be fast. Cause I'm not slowing down for you, or anyone, Sword-Girl."
He then walked past her without a second glance.
The Valkyrie blinked a few times in shock. She certainly did not expect that. From her experience, Mortal men tended to look down on women as less than equal. Yet this one only seemed to care whether she was in the way.
A grin formed on her face. This creature wished to test her mettle. Then he shall have it.
Brunnhilde retrieved her spear as she twirled it in her left hand while wielding her sword in her right. With her weapons in hand, she moved to join the Hulk in glorious battle.
Meanwhile, Giant-Man was still grappling with the Frost Giant. The two titans grappled with each other as the Frost Giant tried to free himself from the Size Changer's grip to use his sword.
Suddenly, he felt something impact against his weapon, and the blade felt much lighter.
Glancing back, he saw that his sword had been shattered and he was holding nothing more than its hilt.
Giant Man followed his gaze and saw a massive wooden sailing ship, flying towards them at ramming speed.
With no time to spare, Giant-Man quickly shrank down and dove out of the way.
The flying ship crashed into the Rainbow bridge, ramming into the Frost Giant, Hank was fighting, along with a massive chunk of Loki's forces. Sending them tumbling off the side of the bridge and into the void below.
From the ship, a volley of arrows burst from the top deck and rained down on the Evil Army.
The magic arrows vaporise most of them in a wave of golden light.
Soon after Hawkeye and Black Panther emerged from the ship, along with a squadron of fifteen Light Elves, Faraday leading the charge.
Hawkeye quickly notched another magic arrow and fired it at a Rock Troll, vaporising it instantly.
Black Panther quickly dashed across the battlefield and slashed several wolves with his vibranium claws.
The Archer and Wakandan swiftly charged into battle along with their Elven allies.
As they moved, an Ogre tried to attack Hawkeye from behind. Only to be crushed under Giant Man's foot. Though the Size Changer only used enough pressure to knock him out.
"Good to see you, Clint!" Giant Man said, a welcoming smile on his face.
"Yeah, I bet!" Hawkeye responded in a smug tone. As Giant-Man shrank down to greet them.
"We'd already snuck halfway to the palace. When you guys set off the alarm!" The Archer berated him.
"What happened? I thought the plan that Squirrel Chick told us was that we all attack together. You guys get itchy trigger fingers or something?"
Hank raised an eyebrow. "What? No, we only arrived a few minutes ago. By the time we arrived, Hulk was already fighting." He explained.
"Huh?" Hawkeye was even more confused. "How's that possible? I thought that Gatekeeper guy was gonna open the portal for all of us at the same time?"
"Perhaps we did not take into account the variations in space-time through the portal's dimensional field?" Black Panther suggested as he dispatched a cyclops.
"Again, huh?" Hawkeye asked as he drew an arrow and shot a Frost Giant in the head.
"Of course." Giant Man exclaimed, placing his fist in his palm. "The movement of mass through the gravitational field of an Einstein–Rosen bridge could result in temporal displacement."
Just as Steam started to exist, Hawkeye's ears, Wasp showed up and blasted a Rogue Asgardian before he could hit him.
"Hank, English, please." She said in a sweet tone.
"Oh, right." Giant Man said bashfully. "In summary, the wormholes we passed through are transporting us at different times."
Finally getting it, Hawkeye drew another arrow and took out another Wolf.
"Well, now that's sorted. Tell me when that Gatekeeper guy gets here, so I can slug him for not mentioning that part." The Archer complained as they continued to fight.
"Perhaps, we should win this fight before starting another." Black Panther suggested before the group dodged the club of a Frost Giant.
The Wakandan King quickly leapt onto the weapon and swiftly ran along the icy structure, up the giant's arm, and lunged at its head. He slashes his claws at the Giant's throat.
Avengers and Asgardians fought together against the Dark Army. The Valkyries attacked from the air, while the Asgardian Warriors attacked from the ground. With the Light Elves backing them up by firing arrows into the enemy ranks.
The Warriors Three battled like a well-oiled machine, covering each other's backs and taking out foes left and right.
Fandral displayed impressive swordsmanship as he elegantly danced around his opponents. He displayed elegant fencing techniques as he parried his opponents' weapons and swiftly struck their exposed areas to dispatch them.
On the opposite end, Hogun swung his mace with overwhelming brutality. Meeting his opponents head-on as he swung his mace with speed and ferocity. Shattering weapons like glass and cracking skulls just as easily. One swift strike sent a Rock Troll's teeth flying from its mouth as the creature toppled to the ground.
Finally, Volstagg, despite his lumbering stature, moved with the same expertise as his comrades. Swinging his great sword like it was an extension of his arm. He cleaves his enemies in half like a hot knife through butter.
With the Valkyries, the Shield Maidens swooped on the Evil ranks, taking out swarms of monsters from the air.
Gruenhilda struck down an Ogre as she made another pass while she and her fellow Valkyries pressed their attack.
She looked down to see her leader, Brunnhilde, on the ground, surrounded by enemies. The Red Haired Warrior was about to come to her Hersir's aid when she saw her efficiently dispatch multiple enemies with her sword and spear.
Alongside her was the Hulk, who took down enemies with his fists and his axe. Together, they fought against their foes with ease.
As Gruenhilda watched, she failed to notice a rogue Asgardian leaping towards her. His sword raised and prepared to impale her.
Only for Lady Sif to appear before her and block his sword with her shield. She then slashed her sword and knocked the Traitorous Asgardian away.
"Keep your mind focused on the battle." The Shield Maiden commanded.
"Y-Yes, my Lady," Gruenhilda said in embarrassment. She berated herself for looking so foolish in front of a legendary warrior like Sif. It seems the Young Valkyrie still has a ways to go.
Sif flew over the battlefield, her sharp eyes scanning the horde of evil forces. Until she found her target, her eyes narrowed.
Kicking her heels, her winged horse picked up speed as she dove towards the Bifrost. When she was close, Lady Sif leapt off her steed and landed on the magical bridge. Before her stood the leader of this small army.
The Asgardian Traitor who wielded Heimdall's shield.
Lady Sif gritted her teeth as her blood boiled seeing that loathsome cur holding that shield.
"Traitor! You dare hold the shield of my brother, Heimdall. Release it, or I shall release thy hands from your filthy body." She threatened with venom in her tone.
The Asgardian snarled at her. His brow furrowed as he gripped his axe tightly. There are not many warriors who would dare try to cross blades with Lady Sif. One of Asgard's finest warriors.
However, he feared more what Loki would do to him than her.
"You wish to claim it, Shield Maiden? Then come and take it." He responded, raising his axe and charging at her.
"Have at thee!" She cried as they charged at each other, lashing out, and their weapons clanged together.
While they fought, the Avengers formed up and took on the army of monsters. You'd think they were never separated from the way they were fighting together.
Giant-Man and Hulk took on Frost Giants with their incredible strength. Hawkeye and Black Panther engaged against Ogres and Trolls with magical arrows, vibranium claws, and daggers. Meanwhile, Wasp flew around her opponents, zapping them with her stingers and aiming for weak points like their eyes and ears to knock them out or distract them long enough for a fellow teammate to take them down.
As they took down an Asgardian Wolf that tried to eat her, Wasp turned to see the colossal form of a Frost Giant marching towards some injured Asgardians.
The size-changing heroine flew up to the giant's head and fired several stingers at its face. The tiny energy bolts stung the Ice Titan's skin as it tried to swat her with its massive hand.
With its attention on her, the insect-themed heroine swiftly zipped around the giant's hand, flying high above its head before her body glowed blue.
The Frost Giant looked up, and his eyes widened as Wasp grew to her giant form. With the added mass, Wasp dropped down on top of the Frost Giant, ramming her knee into his face. Using the momentum, she then grabbed the fur pelt on his shoulder and flipped over the Frost Giant, planting her feet on the ground and using the giant's weight against him as she judo-flipped him onto a pack of Asgardian Wolves.
She clapped her hands together before shrinking down to her small size and flew over to the others.
Around her, it seemed the fight was wrapping up. The Dark forces were retreating, and the rest were being mopped up by their Asgardian allies.
"Well, that was fun." She said as the other Avengers gathered around her.
"No kidding. You're really getting the hang of your big form." Hawkeye complimented before nudging Giant-Man in the ribs. "Guess this guy's been giving you private lessons, huh? And here I thought you quite on us, Pym."
Giant Man frowned at the Archer's gabs as Black Panther walked up to him. "It is good to see you, my friend. I was surprised to hear your voice during our battle with the Masters of Evil."
"Yeah, well. I wasn't able to do anything during that Mutant incident." Hank admitted in a shameful tone. "I couldn't stand by and do nothing this time."
Panther nodded in agreement as the pair shook hands.
Hawkeye turned his gaze to Hulk, who met his. The Jade Giant and Greatest Marksman locked eyes for a few seconds before Hulk grunted and turned away. Marching over to the Blonde Valkyrie and striking up a conversation with her.
Seems things were still the same between them.
The Archer shook his head of those thoughts. No time to get hung up on bad blood. He needed to focus on the mission. Saving Thor and stopping Loki, that's what matters now.
Just then, Wasp flew up to them. "Hey! Hey! Did you guys see me? I was on a flying horse! I rode a flying horse through space!"
She was practically buzzing with joy.
Not that anyone could blame her. They were all experiencing things that they never thought possible.
"Through a wormhole, actually." Giant Man corrected.
Wasp rolled her eyes as she brushed his comment off. It was only then that she realised that not everyone was together.
"Hey, anyone seen Ben? Or Tony or Cap?" She asked.
The other Avengers quickly realised their absence as well.
"Haven't seen any sign of the kid," Hawkeye admitted. "Kinda weird, though. Thought he was the one who came up with this plan?"
"The Messenger, Ratatoskr, informed us that Ben was with the Asgardian Warriors, Heimdall and Balder." Black Panther stated. "If they have not arrived. Then it seems that the time displacement is affecting them, just as it did us."
This caused Wasp to adopt a worried expression. She was concerned about Ben the moment they got transported. Bad enough they had landmasses separating them, now it's entire dimensions.
After everything that happened with the Phoenix Force. Janet did not like the idea of Ben doing something reckless again and getting himself in trouble.
Watching him almost die once was enough for her.
"Do not fear, mortals." Lady Sif said.
The Avengers turned to see Sif walking towards them. Heimdall's massive shield in her hand as she wiped her blade clean on the pelt of a fallen Ice Bear.
"If your friend is with Bladur the Brave and my Brother, Heimdall. Then he is well protected." She assured.
Wasp seemed to be relieved by that. However, she still felt the pit in her stomach. Which likely won't go away until she sees him.
She could tell Sif was feeling the same thing from her expression when she talked about Heimdall. Whether it is blood relations or adoption, sisters will worry about their brothers.
Lady Sif is soon joined by Brunnhilde and the Warriors Three. The Asgardians quickly greeted each other, relief evident in their eyes as they saw each other alive.
"We cannot linger," Hogun grunted.
"Aye, Hogun. Loki's forces will be massing at the gates," Volstagg agreed.
"Which will be quite the welcome home party, I must say." Fandral humorously added.
Lady Sif nodded as she picked up her weapons. "Then let us make haste. We shall show Loki and his lackeys the error of their ways."
"My lady," Faraday spoke up, placing his right fist over his heart and bowing to the Shield Maiden. "I am Faraday of Alfheim. My kinsmen and I are at your service."
Sif acknowledged him with a courteous nod. "Many thanks, Elf. We shall need all the help we can muster."
Brunnhilde stepped forward. "Then let us make for the city. With due haste."
As the Asgardians started to mobilise, Wasp suddenly flew in front of Sif's face.
"Wait, Ben, Cap, and Tony haven't arrived yet. Shouldn't we wait for them?" The Size-Changing Heroine asked.
Lady Sif shook her head. "Nay, Wasp. We cannot delay. Not while Thor's life is at risk."
"But…" Wasp started to protest before Black Panther stepped in.
"She is correct, Wasp. If we wait any longer, it will be that much difficult to accomplish our goal." The Wakandan informed.
Wasp wanted to argue, but she knew they were right. They couldn't wait for the others.
"I'm sorry, Jan," Hank said in a compassionate tone.
Hawkeye then smirked. "Knowing the kid. He'll probably make some grand entrance and pull our butts out of the fire like he usually does."
That got Janet to smile a little. Thinking of all the times Ben's done some amazing things in the short time that she's known him.
He never ceases to amaze her.
She looked up as Hulk walked past her, resting the Bloodaxe on his shoulder as he smirked. "You worry too much."
Janet chuckled. While that may seem like a jab at her. Wasp's known Hulk long enough to read between the lines.
Ben's fine, she should just focus on the mission and wait for him to show up.
With that out of the way, the Avengers and their merry band of Asgardians and Elves marched towards Asgard.
As they paced across the Rainbow Bridge, something nagged at the back of Hawkeye's mind.
"So, we know that Ben is with Joan of Arc's brother. But what about Cap and Stark? Where'd those two end up?" The Archer asked.
The other Avengers wondered the same thing. Where in the Nine Realms did the Armored Avenger and Sentinel of Liberty end up?
Niflheim, the land of the dishonoured dead. A place where souls who did not die in glorious combat are taken.
Ruled by the Goddess of Death, Hela. From her throne in the capital city of Hel.
But the land of the dead had a strange visitor. One who should be dead yet still lives.
Captain America, the man out of time, stood on the steps of Hela's throne. Looking the Goddess dead in the eye as her monstrous pet wolf Gram circles him.
Despite the beast bearing its fangs and stalking very close to the Soldier. Captain America stood unflinching as he kept his eyes trained on the Queen of Hel.
Hela sat on her throne casually. Her sultry green lips curved upwards as she spoke to the Mortal before her.
"I can smell death on you, Steven Rogers. Your time in the land of the living is long past." Hela spoke in a seductive tone.
Nilfheim is nothing to fear, Captain." She said in a soothing voice. Extending her hand towards him. "I can create a paradise for you. A well-deserved reward."
For the first time since climbing those stairs, Captain America turned away from the Goddess.
He would be lying if he said that offer wasn't tempting.
