Chapter 1 - "Wiedergeburt" - The Rebirth

[Year: 1611]

[Location: ???]

Leonhard woke up to what must have been the worst combination of a hangover and neck pain due to sleeping in an awkward position. His head was pounding powerfully to each heartbeat. The mouth felt discernably dry, the tongue torturously numb, and yet he was just barely able to focus on his surroundings.

'This isn't my bedroom, huh. Could have sworn I made it back home…' he sluggishly thought.

'It may have been a wild night, but surely not this crazy right?'

Instead of seeing the usual bed, couch, plants and artistic assembly of little artworks he gathered painstakingly over the years that made up his room, he was confronted with near the opposite.

The room he found himself in was rather small. Just like the mattress he laid on. If you can even call it that, for it felt like cardboard to him. The walls were clean, but the edges of wallpaper peeling away told a tale of aging and lack of repair. Not a whole lot of other things were to be found. Only a small and wooden bedside table, and one chair. Also made from wood. And just like everything else, well worn and aged.

He squinted as slivers of daylight cut through the grimy glass of a narrow window above his head. Raw rays of light cut through the gap between the curtains.

There was a smell, too. Not the kind he was used to waking up to. This was different. Sour. Medicinal. Leathery. It clung to his nostrils, a mixture of alcohol, iron, and something vaguely herbal. Lavender?

He lifted his arm to rub his face and-

Stopped. His instincts told him so.

Something was wrong. Something was seriously wrong.

Blinking blearily, Leonhard pushed himself up into a sitting position, groaning as his spine cracked all the way up. After taking a deep breath he collected himself.

'What the hell happened?'

Upon waking up, fighting off dizziness and realizing that something was not adding up he put the facts together:

Waking up in a weird place? Check. Being all small again in a tiny body? Check. Pants interior inspection to see if his junior traveled with him? Relieved check. A murderous headache? Check. Just all around bad vibes. Check.

As an avid reader of fanfictions he knew this could only mean one thing… Transmigration!

'Now the only thing that remains to be seen is which kind of flavor this particular form of travel takes.'

He had read them all. ROB's sending souls through the universe. Crappy and uninspiring Isekai. Reborn into the past to change the history. A Galaxy far away. Reincarnations into Anime…

With a raspy voice he chuckled to himself: "I guess time will tell. No need to stress about it right now. I mean it could be worse, unlike some folks I currently have a roof over my head."

Because he sat upright he noticed something on the side table next to his bed. A little bell with a well-used string attached to it. Underneath it was a little note with "Klingeln wenn wach!".

Having been raised bilingually due to his American and German parents he was able to read it without issues: "Ring when awake!"

'Odd for them to leave a note in german. Does this mean I am in *Fullmetal Alchemist*? *Hellsing*? *AoT*' he shuddered at that thought.

'But since it says I should ring the bell when I am awake…'

A little while later the door to his room opened with quite some force. What could only be a nurse dressed in all white and a red cross across her clothing came into the room. Her face was covered in a cloth mask. Only the aged eyes remained visible. Hanging around her neck were multiple necklaces depicting crosses and other religious symbols.

"Oh Mary, Jesus and Jospeh! You're awake! Wait for but a moment, I shall find the doctor with haste blessed boy!" she exclaimed in English.

Deeming the English language safe he replied politely:

"Excuse me Miss? I would like to ask where I am- and she left…. great."

The nurse just barged into the room and left right after, not even taking a moment to answer his questions.

Barely a minute had passed and the nurse from before had returned, but this time she was accompanied by an elderly man in a long white coat, who looked at him with intellectual curiosity and a younger man in brown clothing and a monks haircut, clutching a well worn book in his hand. Prayer beads were wrapped around the leather cover.

The man in white spoke in a steady tone first:

"Hmmmmm… a surprise but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. Defying the odds and surviving. Now I just want to check how much of you survived the 'incident'. The nurse tells me you can understand English, yes?"

"Yes sir."

"Ah good, very good indeed. So, do you feel pain anywhere?"

"Uh, aside from a dizzy head not all that much, but some water would be well appreciated"

With a look from the doctor the nurse rushes out of the room and returns shortly after with water and a wooden cup. She pours a glass halfway full of water and hands it to the boy, who gulps it down. With a smile he hands it back asking: "Thank you. May I have some more please? And by the way… who are you and where am I?"
