Chapter 8 - Take A Chance With Me

-

Enid and Wednesday sat on opposite ends of the lunch table. They'd been at each other's throats since the first day of school.

Enid scoffed as she watched Wednesday sip her milk through a black straw. "You're so weird, Addams."

Wednesday rolled her eyes. "Says the girl with pink hair."

Enid laughed, leaning back in her chair. "You just don't get me, Wednesday."

Wednesday smirked, leaning in. "Maybe you're just too difficult to get."

Enid clenched her jaw, clearly annoyed by Wednesday's remark. She tossed her fork down on the table, causing it to bounce and fall down into the ground.

"You think you're so special, Addams," Enid spat, her eyes boring into Wednesday's. "You're just a freak who doesn't belong in a school full of freaks."

Wednesday's expression darkened. She crossed her arms, leaning back. "Says the one with friends as shallow as a kiddie pool."

Yoko, sitting next to Enid, gasped, placing a hand on Enid's arm. "Enid, dear..."

Enid ripped her arm away from Yoko. "Shut up, Yoko! This is between me and Wednesday!"

Just then, Xavier showed up, arms stretched behind his back. "Well, well, what's all the fuss about?" His sly smile didn't quite reach his eyes.

Enid huffed, "Xavier, you didn't see any of this?"

"Afraid not," he replied with a wink. "But listen, I got an invite to Tyler's place tonight for his welcoming party. You three should come."

Wednesday raised an eyebrow. "Tyler Galphin? Interesting choice."

Xavier shrugged. "He's got good music, and who knows, maybe you two," Xavier gestured at Enid and Wednesday, "will get along better after a few drinks."

Enid blushed, caught off guard by Xavier's suggestion. "Maybe... maybe that's not a bad idea."

Yoko nodded eagerly. "Oh I'd love to go! It could be fun."

Wednesday seemed amused by the proposition. "Alright, why not? Let's see what happens tonight."

Xavier grinned. "Perfect. See you ladies later tonight then." As he walked off, Enid turned back to Wednesday, a challenge burning in her eyes.

Yoko turned to Enid with a playful smile. "Hey Enid, you should wear that cute white dress you got. It really brings out your eyes."

Enid bit her lip, considering. "Yeah, maybe it will soften my image a bit." She glanced at Wednesday, who looked intrigued. "You think it'll work, Wednesday?"

Wednesday shrugged nonchalantly, "It might make you less threatening...for a change."

Enid scowled but couldn't hide her own smirk. "Shut up, Wednesday."

Later that evening, Wednesday opened the door to the dimly lit dorm room she shared with Enid. The air was thick with the scent of Enid's floral perfume. Wednesday kicked off her boots and flopped onto her bed, stretching out.

Enid emerged from the bathroom, her hair curled and makeup done up. The white dress clung to her curves, looking stunning against her pale skin. "Well?" she asked, doing a small twirl. "What do you think?"

Wednesday raised herself up on her elbows, eyes trailing over Enid's figure. "You look...surprisingly edible." She let out a low whistle.

Enid felt a blush rise to her cheeks despite herself, fury mixing with something else she refused to acknowledge. "Ugh, you're impossible, Addams!" She grabbed a pillow and hurled it at Wednesday, but it fell short, landing on the floor between their beds.

Wednesday just smirked, clearly enjoying getting under Enid's skin. "Don't act like you don't love the attention."

Enid spluttered, face burning now. She spun around, hiding her face from Wednesday as she fussed with her dress, trying to calm her racing heart. Damn Wednesday for making her feel...like this.

Wednesday headed for the shower, stripping off her clothes as she went. Under the hot water, she couldn't help but think about Enid's reaction...and how flustered she'd gotten over such a simple compliment.

As steam filled the room, Wednesday put on her signature black suit, feeling a rush of comfort from the familiar fabric. When she emerged, steam curling around her like smoke, she noticed Enid was already gone.

With a sigh, Wednesday grabbed her jacket and left the dorm room. Enid's absence was almost expected at this point. Shrugging off thoughts of her roommate, she joined Xavier, Yoko, and Tyler at the party.

Music pulsed from the speakers, students dancing and chattering all around. As Wednesday took a sip of whatever strange concoction Tyler had offered her, she scanned the crowd for any sign of Enid. Not that she cared whether she showed up or not...but her curiosity got the cat, if you know what she meant.

Suddenly, there she was. Enid joined over to the group, her cheeks flushed and a glass of punch in hand. She looked...almost beautiful. Wednesday felt her heart skip a beat, then immediately cursed herself for such a foolish thought.

"There you all are!" Enid slurred slightly. "I finally found you." She beamed at them, the white dress clinging to her every move. She took a seat next to Wednesday without a second thought, close enough to feel the heat radiating off her body.

Enid glanced over at Wednesday, her eyes raking over the black suit with an appreciative smile. "Hey, you look..." she began, pausing to catch her balance. "You look...good."

Wednesday raised an eyebrow, not expecting such a straightforward compliment from Enid. But there it was, and she found herself strangely pleased. She shifted slightly, attempting to hide the effect Enid's charm.

Yoko giggled and looped her arm through Enid's, drawing her attention away from Wednesday. "Oh, look at you two! You seem to be getting along tonight," Yoko said cheerily. "Come on Enid, let's go dance!"

Enid blinked, attempting to process what was happening. "Yeah...let's dance." She allowed herself to be led away by Yoko towards the throng of dancing students.

Wednesday watched them go, a complicated mix of jealousy and something else swirling inside her chest.

The music pounded, the bass vibrating through Wednesday's bones. She'd lost count of how many drinks she'd downed, but her inhibitions were lowering with each passing moment.

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted Enid returning from the dance floor, her cheeks glowing crimson beneath the party lights. Yoko joined behind her, giggling as she passed a fresh drink to Wednesday.

As Enid scanned the area, her eyes landing back on Wednesday. She stumbled a bit and with a playful grin, declared, "This seat taken?" before plopping down unceremoniously onto Wednesday's lap.

The heat of her body seeping through the thin fabric of her dress was undeniable. Wednesday swallowed hard, feeling every curve settle perfectly against her. This couldn't be real...yet here they were.

Enid leaned back slightly, her head tilted down to look at Wednesday with half-lidded eyes.

Xavier rolled his eyes but smiled, shouting over the music, "Seriously, you two, enough flirting already! Go sort this out before we lose you to makeout town!"

Yoko nodded, grinning wider. "Yeah, you're so obvious! Just kiss already!"

Enid burst into laughter, glancing at Wednesday with a grin that could light up the darkest night.

Biting her lip, Enid looked up at Wednesday, her expression suddenly serious despite the lingering mischief in her eyes. She took Wednesday's hands and squeezed them gently. "Addams..." she began, stealing a glance around at their friends who were now smirking and nudging each other.

"Take a chance with me," Enid murmured, her voice barely audible over the pulsing beat of the music. Her heart hammered in her chest, waiting for a response.

This moment hung between them—an unspoken understanding that everything could change tonight.

Wednesday felt like time had slowed. The world narrowed down to just Enid in her arms, the warmth of her skin, the sweetness of her breath. She couldn't resist those pleading eyes any longer. "Yes," she whispered, her voice husky.

Before she could second guess herself, Wednesday closed the distance between them. Her lips met Enid's in a soft but firm kiss, all the tension and longing pouring out of her into it. The music faded, the crowd disappeared - there was only this moment, and the girl in her arms.

Enid pulled back slowly, cheeks flushed and eyes wide. She stared at Wednesday, a look of genuine confusion mixed with delight on her face.

"I...I thought you hated me too," she said, tracing a finger over Wednesday's jawline. A small, hopeful smile played on her lips. "Guess we're both full of surprises."

She leaned in again, her breath tickling Wednesday's ear as she whispered, "Maybe...maybe we should go back to the dorm." A thrill ran through Enid as they disappeared from the party without glancing to their friends.

Instead of heading back to the safety of their dorm room, Enid grabbed Wednesday's hand and led her out into the cool night air. They snuck away from the party and made their way to the old graveyard on campus. The moon cast eerie shadows around the tombstones as they slipped between them, giggling like schoolgirls.

"I want to show you something," Enid murmured, her grip tightening on Wednesday's hand.

Enid led Wednesday deeper into the graveyard, stopping at last in front of a particular grave draped in black roses. She knelt down and carefully lifted one of the blooms, revealing a cluster of black dahlias hidden beneath. "I knew these were your favorite..." Enid said with a shy grin, her fingers gently brushing against Wednesday's arm.

"And I also knew this was your favorite unsolved case..." She gestured to the grave they stood by - marked with the name Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia. "I researched you, Wednesday...I wanted to understand you better."

The candlelight danced in Enid's eyes, her gaze soft yet piercing. This gesture, this knowledge she possessed...it felt almost like she saw Wednesday, truly saw her, for the first time.

Rather than speaking, Wednesday surged forward, claiming Enid's lips once more. The kiss was deeper this time, more assertive. She poured everything she felt - the fascination, the desire, the longing - into it. A small sound of surprise escaped Enid, but she quickly melted into Wednesday, meeting her passion with her own.

Their bodies pressed together, hands roaming cautiously as they explored the depths of their growing connection beneath the silent watch of the dead.

When they finally broke for air, Wednesday gazed into Enid's flushed face, her heart pounding wildly. She needed to hear more from Enid, needed to know she was just as all-in.

"Take a chance with me," Wednesday whispered, mirroring Enid's earlier words. It was a risk, putting herself out there like this. But she found herself no longer afraid. Enid had changed everything.

Enid stared back, her own eyes reflecting the moonlight as she nodded. "Yes," she breathed out, her voice barely audible over the whispering wind. "I'll take a chance with you."

"I love you," Enid said suddenly, the words tumbling free in a rush. She looked almost startled to have admitted it, yet unmistakable joy danced in her gaze.

Wednesday's lips parted in surprise before curving into a radiant smile. "I love you too," she replied, her voice overflowing with conviction. And as she pulled Enid close once more, their confessions mingled on the night air like secrets among the tombstones, sealing the start of something real. Something true.
