Chloe gently folded her letter and slipped it into an envelope, then stole a glance at the grandfather clock in the corner. Its hands pointed to the midnight hour. As she had confessed in her letter to her father, it was indeed true that she met with the Duke privately each night. That she found little pleasure in these late-night trysts, however, remained her secret.
“His Grace awaits you in the billiards room,” a footman informed her.
“And our guests?”
“The final guest has just taken his leave.”
That must have been the man Gilles had escorted out.
No matter how late his responsibilities kept him, Damien never once failed to keep their nightly appointment. Consequently, Chloe often found herself unable to retire until after he had withdrawn for the evening.
“Your Grace,” Chloe greeted him.
