Chapter 5: A Promise She Didn't Make
Esi what are you doing here it's late and u need to catch some sleep
These are the words Kwabena said to her
He was so gentle even after he caught me here he didn't ask questions
He stood Infront of the door and watched me as I enter the room
Esi barely slept.
The words in Ama Agyeman's journal echoed in her ears — "If something happens to me, tell—" Tell who? And tell what?
She wasn't just living in another woman's house. She was living in her shadow.
---
The next morning, the mansion felt colder. The housekeepers moved quickly, quietly. No one looked her in the eye.
At breakfast, Kwabena sat across from her. He looked the same — polished, polite, almost perfect. But Esi's heart pounded every time he glanced her way.
"Did you sleep well?" he asked.
"Yes," she lied.
"I'm having a few guests over tonight," he added casually. "Just some friends from the board. They want to meet you."
Esi forced a smile. "Of course."
But inside, something twisted.
---
That afternoon, she crept back to the hidden room — but it was locked.
Completely sealed.
As if it had never existed.
---
That night, the house filled with laughter and clinking glasses. Esi stood beside Kwabena, dressed in deep red kente, smiling when people looked her way. But her mind was miles away.
Until she met him.
One of the guests — young, sharp-eyed, tall — looked at her a little too long.
When their eyes met, he gave her a small, knowing nod.
Not flirtation. A signal.
Later, when the crowd thinned, she stepped out onto the balcony for air. He followed.
"You're not like the others," he said calmly.
She tensed. "Excuse me?"
"You don't know the truth yet, do you?" he said.
Then he handed her a folded piece of paper.
"If you want answers… meet me tomorrow. Alone."
He walked away before she could speak.
Esi opened the note.
It had a time. A location. And one chilling sentence:
> "Ama tried to leave too."
