Chapter 5 - And Cats

In that instant, Kevin thought about a lot of things. He thought about the traditional virtue of the Chinese people to repay kindness, about revolutionaries who dedicated their lives to their cause and truth, about the first time he bravely stood up to the class bully who tried to steal his chocolate in elementary school, and so on... Well, actually, he didn't think that much. He only knew one thing: This girl named Lily in front of him was incredible. She might be someone extraordinary, or even not human, but she wasn't bad, and she had just saved his life. Kevin was one hundred percent sure that the "weird thing" that sometimes took on human form and sometimes turned into a bat had attacked him first, and several times afterward, its attention was also on him. This was absolutely correct!

Although Kevin was just an ordinary person, he was quite confident and even proud of his intuition and calmness in crisis situations. Because he had been a naughty kid since childhood, having honed this quality through countless dangerous stunts like welding saws to light bulbs and the dangers that came with them. Even though he was on the brink of death just now, he noticed that the "bat" had actually targeted him from the beginning.

But Lily seemed to have not noticed this. She might have been set in her ways, unilaterally believing from the start that the bat was after her. This could probably be attributed to the fact that this girl was a bit simple-minded...

However, no matter what, this girl who claimed to be a "werewolf" had saved his life, so Kevin couldn't just leave her be. This place was desolate and remote, with few residents, and it was already late at night. As an outsider, Lily... A wolf wouldn't have a place to stay here and might have to sleep on the streets. He couldn't let that happen.

Of course, he also thought about the possibility of the bat returning, but as he said earlier, he felt that the bat was after him. Keeping Lily by his side might be a safeguard. Even if the Pegasus Meteor Brick was unreliable, it was still stronger than a rolling pin at home, right?

This thought might be a bit discouraging, but facing this scene beyond the bounds of common sense, Kevin could only plan like this. He was quite self-aware.

"Come on, it's getting late," Kevin rubbed his legs that were slightly numb from the cold and walked ahead of Lily. "I'll have to get you something to eat when we get back. By the way, do you eat vegetarian?"

He suddenly remembered her "werewolf" identity and couldn't help but ask. This showed that Kevin's acceptance ability was quite strong.

I eat everything!" Lily nodded happily, carrying a large box weighing over a hundred pounds and walking swiftly beside Kevin. However, after taking a few steps, she realized something and said, "Landlord, aren't you scared at all? I think ordinary people would definitely be scared if they encountered this. Have you seen 'others' before? Hey, landlord, don't worry, I won't hurt anyone! I've watched a lot of movies, and humans seem to be really afraid of us..."

Kevin felt a dull pain starting in his temples again: This girl's true nature was revealed once more. She was outgoing, naive, blunt, and chatterbox. He couldn't answer too many things at once, so he sighed slightly and said, "~~~!... To be honest, I'm still in a daze. Wait for me to go home and have a cigarette to calm down before we talk. Let's talk about everything when we get back."

So Lily finally quieted down a bit after that, and the two walked in silence until they arrived at the legendary Baishi Road and stopped in front of a two-story building that looked somewhat old but quite large.

The building was located at the end of this cement road, with wasteland behind it and quite a bit of openness around it. It could be said to be the boundary between human civilization and the natural world. Kevin often described his house in this cool-sounding way to prove that he still had a young mindset and at least retained his ability to be a little otaku. Both sides of Baishi Road were dotted with similarly faded and old residences, many of which were two or even three stories tall. However, most of them were deserted, with no lights or sounds of people, like ghost houses that had been abandoned for a long time. As this forgotten corner of the southern suburbs became increasingly desolate and the city's focus never shifted this way, more and more local residents chose to move to the city. Kevin, who lived at the end of the road, was one of the few remaining residents here.

"Fortunately, the streetlights here have just been replaced, otherwise it would really look like a ghost street," Kevin muttered to himself.

"What? What ghost street?" Lily's voice immediately came from beside him. She was truly a canine creature with exceptional hearing.

Kevin waved his hand to indicate that he was just speaking nonsense, and Lily didn't mind. She just looked up at her new home where she would soon be renting, and the dull-looking rectangular old building seemed to satisfy the girl quite a bit. "Hmm, a good place. It's not too noisy, and there are few people around so I won't be afraid of being recognized. Living in human society is difficult. I'm always worried about being sent for experimentation, and there are too many human swindlers. Fighting never ends, and it's very troublesome."

While Kevin stepped forward to open the door, he glanced at Lily in surprise and said, "You're so powerful. So you're afraid of being sent for experimentation too?"

He was already quite impressed with the girl after witnessing Lily's display of power just now. He felt that werewolves, as "legendary creatures," were somehow more formidable than humans, but he never expected her to blurt out something like "being worried about being sent for experimentation."

"Uh-huh," Lily nodded vigorously. "I watch movies a lot, and humans love to do things like that. You guys are very xenophobic. Aliens in America get sent for experimentation, and aliens in China get sent for experimentation and then tasted to see if they're salty or not. So scary!"

Kevin decided not to take any topics seriously with this airhead.

There was a security door and an engineering door, both with somewhat old locks. Kevin had to put in quite an effort to successfully open the doors and enter his home. He casually turned on the light in the living room and turned around to beckon Lily inside.

After locking the main door behind him, Kevin began to introduce the layout to Lily. "This is the big living room. My dad designed this house, so the structure is quite innovative. Just try to understand it. There are two doors on both sides of the living room, leading to my room and the room reserved for you. The door in front leads to a small hallway that connects to the kitchen and bathroom. The stairs lead up to the second floor, where there are four empty rooms, but no one is living there yet, so you don't have to worry about it. Let me first help you put your luggage away—by the way, did you bring your own bedding or will you use the ones here? Anyway, everything here is quite clean, but girls are usually more particular about these things..."

"I don't mind, as long as I can sleep!" Lily exclaimed energetically, patting her suitcase. "I didn't bring any bedding; this one suitcase can't hold it all."

Kevin swallowed the rest of his words. It seemed that this girl was not an "ordinary" one; she was more on the outgoing side.

Lily didn't ask for help with her luggage. It wasn't clear if it was out of girlish reserve or simply because she was hungry. She just urged Kevin to cook dinner quickly and emphasized again that she would pay for the meal, which moved Kevin quite a bit.

In the kitchen, Kevin took out instant dry noodles and a few ingredients from the refrigerator, hummed a tune, and turned on the gas. Then he remembered his terrifying experience that evening and decided to smoke a cigarette to calm down while cooking.

...Fortunately, he realized it just before lighting his cigarette and quickly turned on the gas stove; otherwise, this book would only have five chapters.

Listening to the clinking sounds coming from Lily's room and wondering what kind of strange luggage she had packed in that big suitcase, Kevin cooked the noodles while reflecting on his experiences of the day: going to the city to look for a job but failing, sleeping in the park and meeting a friendly girl by coincidence, discovering that this girl was his new tenant, and then having his normal life shattered by supernatural phenomena on the way home with his new tenant—werewolves, supernatural powers, a near-fatal attack. Those ten minutes of experience had overturned and rebuilt his worldview of the past twenty-five years!

What was that bat that could turn into a human figure, carrying a bloody and cold aura?

Kevin pondered for a moment andTerrifying concluded that it might be the legendary vampire. After all, he already had a werewolf by his side. Isn't a vampire who doesn't engage in a love-hate relationship with a werewolf a qualified vampire?

But speaking of werewolves... The werewolf girl he encountered seemed quite different from the legends. She didn't have a green face or fangs, but was rather cute... Just a bit ditzy.

After thinking for a while without any breakthroughs, Kevin decided to put everything aside for now and enjoy his meal. Lily seemed like a pleasant "werewolf" to be around, and perhaps she could explain the situation to him, giving him some direction as he rebuilt his worldview.

The noodles were soon cooked, and Kevin carried the quick and filling dinner back to the living room. He found Lily already sitting at the dining table with an expectant look. She sniffed the aroma of the noodles and wrinkled her nose, flashing Kevin a bright smile. This feeling... Was she like a dog waiting for food?

They sat down at the dining table, and Lily eagerly grabbed the chopsticks. At this moment, Kevin suddenly remembered something and quickly shouted in the direction of the stairs, "Come down and eat!"

Under Lily's curious gaze, a black-and-white shadow agilely jumped down from upstairs and very skillfully rushed to Kevin's feet, rubbing its head against his shoes: It was a black-and-white kitten.

What happened next left Kevin puzzled for a long time:

Lily, this powerful werewolf who had just turned his worldview upside down and been categorized as a "highly mysterious species," jumped up from her chair the instant she saw the black-and-white kitten and darted behind the nearby sofa with a hiss!

She even forced out her werewolf form!
