Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: The Price of Power

"There is no problem with the instrument. Serum enhancement can begin."

Howard, ever the rigorous scientist, had repeatedly debugged and checked the equipment several times, ensuring there would be no errors in the experiment.

At this time, all eyes fell on Steve, the protagonist of the day. If successful, America would create a superhuman army, one capable of defeating the Axis powers with ease.

"Don't be afraid, Stevie. In eighteen years, you'll be a brave man all over again," Alan comforted him.

You are a very nice person.

With a storm of mixed feelings, Steve walked toward the serum fusion instrument and lay down inside the pod, which looked like a futuristic space capsule. Many of the scientific researchers were also nervous. Failure meant more than just the loss of one life; the entire project could be shelved, and all their hard work would be in vain.

As the hatch closed, Steve shut his eyes and waited for the result.

Dr. Erskine took out the metal box containing the super-serum and removed the vial inside. He was the one who had developed the serum, but the injection and fusion part would be performed by Howard. They installed the vial into the injection slot interface and then looked at Howard, who was standing by.

"First stage preparation," Howard shouted.

The staff controlling the power turned on the switch. Suddenly, indicator lights on multiple devices lit up, indicating that the power supply was normal.

"Alan, do you think it will work?" Wilson asked, looking at the serum instrument with anticipation. He was just a layman when it came to biological enhancement research, but that didn't mean he wasn't curious.

"If he died, it wouldn't be any fun," Alan said, a mysterious smile on his face.

At this, Wilson raised his eyebrows. He had a premonition that something was wrong. After being together for so long, he had some understanding of Alan's character. It was impossible for him to be content with peace and quiet and not stir up some kind of trouble. It simply wasn't in his nature. Of course, he didn't ask for details, as Alan would surely jump out and show off when the time was right.

"Entering the second stage!"

At Howard's command, the serum was passed through the catheter into the fusion instrument. At the same time, through the instrument's glass window, they could see the light inside gradually increasing.

"Howard is using an optical transmission method for the fusion," Alan stroked his chin, figuring out how the instrument worked. "It's much safer than conventional injections. The advantage is that it's more fully absorbed, and the enhancement is very balanced."

"How do you know that so clearly?" Wilson looked at him in disbelief. Alan was supposed to be a weapons designer, yet he was proficient in the knowledge of the energy field.

"Wilson, you should read more books when you have nothing to do," Alan commented. "The disadvantage is that the light energy is unstable. If there is any accident, the outside will be burnt and the inside will be tender."

"…" He could understand the advice to read more, but coming from a mentally ill person, Wilson always felt a bit awkward.

"Entering the third stage!" Howard commanded.

As the power output increased, Steve's face could no longer be seen inside the instrument, which was now filled with a light as bright as a bathroom heater.

"Ahhh…" At this moment, Steve groaned in pain. The sound made everyone's heart leap into their throats.

"Stop! He'll die!" Dr. Erskine anxiously shouted. He was worried about Steve, but he was even more worried about the failure of the experiment, which would lead the military to terminate its research funding.

"Don't stop! I can handle it!" Steve's belief supported the experiment. He refused to give up. He didn't want to go back to his old, thin self; he hoped to realize his ambitions.

Everyone had a nervous expression on their faces, on high alert for emergencies. So far, the process was going smoothly, but the only question was whether the goal could be achieved.

"Why aren't you nervous at all? You and Steve have been very close these past few days," Wilson asked curiously.

Alan clenched his fist and made a gesture of encouragement. "Success is not accidental; it is inevitable. Oh yeah!"

Suddenly, the power supply to the device began to decrease. Howard had set a threshold; once the critical amount of serum was fused, the device would automatically cut power.

Puff!

The air was released, and the cabin door opened.

The originally skinny Steve had transformed into a muscular man of six-foot-two. Gasping, he stepped out of the machine, his broad chest rising and falling with each breath.

Carter, the only woman present, was so shocked her eyes almost filled with tears. She couldn't help but touch his taut chest muscles. "The patient had severe breast hyperplasia. The initial size was a C cup," Alan diagnosed. "Dr. Alan recommends wearing the Magic Bra for physical therapy."

Steve and Carter both looked at Alan, who was talking nonsense with a completely serious expression.

"Steve, how do you feel?" Carter asked with concern.

"It's never been better." Steve looked at his powerful arms and the eight bulging abdominal muscles he had never dared to imagine.

"It seems the operation was a success. The main aftereffect is self-aggrandizement," Alan said, adjusting the nonexistent monocle on his right eye. "I suggest conservative treatment. Regular humiliation and a beating for two hours should suppress the out-of-control bull syndrome."

"…" Please be a human being. How could anyone still be human after being beaten for two hours?

Bang!

There was a sudden explosion. In an instant, sparks flew and glass showered everywhere. A hidden spy took advantage of the chaos, quickly approaching the remaining super-serum.

"Protect the serum! That's the only one left!" Dr. Erskine reminded anxiously. He had worked hard for several years on this project and regarded it as something more precious than his own life.

Bang, bang, bang…

Three shots were fired, and the spy shot Dr. Erskine without hesitation, clearly intending to curb America's plan to form a superhuman army. The agent came prepared and withdrew immediately after he succeeded, evacuating quickly along a pre-arranged route.

At this moment, everyone in S.H.I.E.L.D. was concerned with the safety of Dr. Erskine.

"Recover the serum… prevent it from falling into the hands of the Axis powers…" With that, Dr. Erskine died.

Upon hearing this, Steve chased after the spy agent in the direction he had fled. Alan looked at the dead Dr. Erskine and wondered if he was the one who had indirectly killed him. He had just told the Soviet Union about the serum. According to the normal plot, it should have been Axis agents who killed him. It seemed he would have to wait for the results of the investigation; otherwise, Alan was prepared to shed three tears to express his apology.

Carter and Colonel Phillips gave chase to provide support. However, in an alley, they found Steve lying on the ground with a gunshot wound.

"The Axis powers stole the serum. The small submarine he was riding had the Axis logo on it. There was another group of people trying to steal the serum, and I was shot by them."

Steve managed to reveal some useful information before falling into a coma.

"Steve, hold on!" Carter shouted anxiously.
