Chapter 51 - Through the Shadows of Eternity

Chapter 52: Through the Shadows of Eternity

The night air was colder than usual, pressing down on the ancient forest like a shroud. Liam's breath came out in visible puffs as he knelt beside the dying embers of their temporary campfire, the silence between him and Ella heavy with more than just exhaustion. Shadows danced on her pale face as she stood nearby, crimson eyes scanning the darkness for threats that never seemed to rest.

They hadn't spoken since the escape from Blackthorn Citadel. Their narrow victory came at the cost of countless lives, allies lost in the swirling magic and flame of the Queen's wrath, and Liam's own blood left on the cursed ground. He could still feel the phantom sting of the contract's magic pulsing beneath his skin like a buried ember refusing to die.

Ella finally spoke, her voice quiet but commanding. "We don't have much time. The other courts will retaliate soon. Your blood has awakened something ancient... something none of them expected."

Liam rose, brushing ash from his hands. "And what about us? About the contract? I can feel it changing again."

Her gaze lingered on him, unreadable. "It's no longer just a contract. The bond we forged wasn't supposed to evolve this way. Not with your kind."

The forest trembled then, a low thrumming vibrating through the roots. Ella's posture stiffened.

"They've found us," she whispered. "We run."

They took off into the forest's heart, the moon above bleeding red through the branches. Behind them, arcane sigils began to shimmer in the air, unnatural lights chasing through the trees. Liam kept pace beside her, barely, the mark on his neck pulsing harder with every step.

Suddenly, the forest opened into a vast hollow—an ancient battleground overgrown with thorns and rusted armor. At the center, a stone monolith pulsed with the same red hue as Ella's eyes.

"The Obelisk of Vorn," she said breathlessly. "This... this might be our only hope."

"But what is it?" Liam asked, his voice rough with fatigue.

"A relic of the first blood queens. It can cleanse or corrupt the contract... depending on who invokes it."

The pursuing lights drew closer. Ella's fangs elongated as her instinct battled with reason.

"We don't have time to debate," Liam said, placing his hand on the monolith.

Power surged through him, visions of ancient battles, queens long dead, and lovers torn apart by blood oaths flashing in his mind. He screamed.

Ella grabbed him, anchoring him to the present. "Liam! Fight it. Don't let it rewrite you."

The contract mark on his neck glowed white-hot. Magic flared outward, casting the forest into a dome of searing light. Their pursuers screamed, disintegrating in the glow.

When it faded, Liam collapsed to the ground. Ella caught him.

"You risked everything," she whispered.

"I had to," he breathed. "For you. For us."

A new silence settled between them. Not of fear, but something deeper.

Then Ella gasped. The mark on Liam's neck had changed—it now bore a twin symbol, hers and his, entwined.

The contract was no longer a shackle.

It was a bond.

And it was just the beginning of something far more dangerous.
