Chapter 25 - Chapter 25

At the brook, the men held their positions rigidly, eyes never wavering from the massive, snarling creature. The monster paced within the confined circle they had created, its claws raking the muddy earth, leaving deep, jagged furrows. It snarled again, the noise vibrating through the men's bones, a raw, primal sound full of malice.

Jiro stood at the group's center, his breathing steady despite the deep gash in his side. Blood seeped through the makeshift bandage he'd hastily tied, but he forced himself to ignore the pain. His eyes locked onto the creature, gauging its every twitch, every flex of its powerful muscles. "Hold steady," he called, his voice firm and commanding. "It's testing us, looking for weakness."

Masato grimaced, sweat dripping down his brow. He shifted his weight to his uninjured leg, carefully keeping pressure off the bleeding wound. Beside him, Kenji adjusted his grip on the spear, the wooden shaft slick with sweat and blood. His arms burned from exertion, muscles trembling under the relentless strain.

Daichi stood slightly behind them, carefully positioning torches to limit the creature's movements. Each torch he planted wavered slightly as his aged hands shook, but he pressed forward, determined not to falter. The firelight flickered erratically, casting grotesque shadows across the snarling face of the beast.

The creature lunged, a swift and vicious strike aimed at their weakest point. Masato yelled out, raising his spear defensively, but the beast was faster. It slammed into him, knocking him off balance and sending him sprawling onto the muddy ground. Masato scrambled desperately, rolling away just as the beast's claws tore into the earth beside him.

"Masato!" Jiro shouted urgently, stepping forward with his own spear, thrusting it toward the beast's exposed side. The creature twisted away, narrowly avoiding the spearhead, roaring as it retreated slightly.

Kenji seized the moment, leaping forward to drag Masato to his feet, both men barely dodging another savage swipe of the creature's claws. Daichi threw another lit torch, this one landing close to the beast's paws, forcing it back again, its growls deepening with rage.

"Keep the formation!" Jiro commanded, eyes darting to assess the positioning of his men. He knew they couldn't hold this stalemate forever; exhaustion and injuries would soon take their toll. "We have to end this soon."

The creature circled cautiously, its six eyes glowing malevolent, watching them. Jiro felt a cold dread settle in his stomach, aware that the beast was calculating, intelligent beyond any animal he'd ever encountered.

"Masato, the wires!" Jiro called. Masato nodded sharply, ignoring the agony radiating from his wounded leg as he swiftly adjusted the shinobi wires, laying them strategically in the monster's path, obscured beneath fallen leaves and mud.

"Ready," Masato breathed out, signaling with a brief nod.

Jiro took a steadying breath. "Kenji, bait it forward."

Kenji hesitated only for an instant, then moved, stepping toward the beast with spear extended. The monster snarled and lunged again, swiping at Kenji. He jumped backward just in time, avoiding the razor-sharp claws.

Enraged, the beast surged forward, directly into the hidden wires. The wires tightened around its limbs, slicing deeply and tangling its powerful legs. It roared again, the sound shaking the very air around them as it thrashed wildly, fighting against the painful restraints.

"Now!" Jiro shouted. Daichi threw the remaining torches forward, encircling the beast in a ring of fire. Flames rose rapidly, illuminating the creature in stark, terrifying clarity. It fought against the wires, strength undiminished, growling and twisting violently.

Masato and Kenji moved in from the sides, thrusting their spears with precise coordination, forcing the beast to remain within the fiery boundary. The creature's roars intensified, driven by pain and fury as it snapped and lunged, desperate for escape.

"We need to finish this!" Masato yelled, voice strained with urgency. Jiro nodded sharply, gripping his spear tighter, determination etched clearly across his face.

"Together," Jiro commanded. The men tightened their formation, spears raised, advancing carefully toward the beast as flames crackled loudly around them.

The creature lunged again, even more ferociously, its immense strength causing the wires to snap. With newfound freedom, it staggered forward, claws swinging wildly, catching Kenji across his shoulder. Kenji cried out, stumbling backward but quickly regaining his stance, face pale from pain.

Jiro stepped forward, thrusting his spear forcefully toward the beast's exposed chest. The beast twisted violently, the spear grazing its side and drawing blood. It shrieked in agony and rage, eyes burning with hatred as it retreated momentarily, assessing its injuries and opponents.

Breathing heavy, Jiro maintained eye contact with the beast, unwilling to show any sign of weakness despite the throbbing pain in his side. He knew they were running out of time, their strength waned with each passing second, while the beast seemed to draw upon an endless reserve of primal rage.

"Hold your ground," Jiro commanded firmly, voice steady despite the chaos surrounding them. "It's cornered. It knows it's trapped."

A sudden blur of motion caught Jiro's attention, Daichi stumbled slightly, his aged legs unable to sustain the constant strain. The beast seized this brief vulnerability, lunging directly at him. Daichi's eyes widened in shock and terror, but before anyone could react, the monster's claws sank deep, tearing brutally into Daichi's chest. Daichi gasped, his torch falling from his grasp as he collapsed to the ground.

"Daichi!" Masato screamed, voice breaking. Anguish and fury surged through the remaining men, reigniting their resolve. Jiro roared with raw anger, charging forward, spear thrusting fiercely toward the beast.

Suddenly, a sharp whistle echoed through the air, and masked figures appeared swiftly and silently from the trees. Before the villagers could react, one figure raised his hands, rapidly forming intricate seals. "Earth Release: Mud Binding!" he called sharply.
