However, betrayal shattered their unity. A faction within their group, led (possibly) by a powerful revolutionary named Mei, believed Patriarchy had corrupted the realms and sought to establish matriarchal superiority.
A powerful Vita-based spell, cast either by Mei or the collective magical fallout of that betrayal, spread a persistent metaphysical alteration among many male Travelers and descendants across time. The spell was not targeted at all menābut enough were affected to change gender perception and magical norms across the world.
