Chapter 13 - the reckoning

Amy's lies broke my trust, but love healed the wound,

In your eyes, Joanne, my heart always bloomed.

Amy had always believed in her ability to manipulate situations to her advantage. She thrived on control, and her jealousy toward Joanne was no exception. But as time passed, Amy felt her grip slipping. Paxton, once so easily swayed, seemed less willing to blindly follow her narrative. The shift unsettled her, and she knew she had to act decisively to regain control.

Joanne, on the other hand, had become a constant thorn in her side. Not only had she captured Paxton's attention, but she also embodied everything Amy despised—confidence, kindness, and an ability to stand her ground. The bitterness gnawed at Amy, turning her thoughts darker with each passing day.

It was on a cold Thursday evening that Amy decided she couldn't wait any longer. If Joanne wasn't going to leave Paxton's life on her own, Amy would make sure she was pushed out.

The plan was simple yet effective—at least in Amy's mind. She crafted an elaborate lie, carefully weaving together half-truths and outright fabrications, all designed to make Joanne look bad in Paxton's eyes. Amy knew her bestfriend well; his loyalty could be shaken with just the right amount of doubt.

She began by planting seeds of suspicion. In casual conversations with Paxton, she dropped subtle hints about Joanne's supposed dishonesty. "You know, I overheard something strange the other day," she'd say, her tone nonchalant but laced with implication. "I didn't want to believe it, but... well, people talk."

Paxton would frown, brushing her off. "Joanne's not like that, Amy. You don't know her like I do."

Amy feigned a sigh. "Maybe. But you should be careful. Not everyone is as genuine as they seem."

The real blow came a few days later when Amy orchestrated a confrontation. She arranged for one of their mutual friends, Tara, to "accidentally" reveal that Joanne had been seen with another guy—a lie Amy had carefully fed her.

"You didn't hear it from me," Tara said, looking appropriately guilty as she relayed the story to Paxton. "But it seemed... cozy."

Paxton's initial reaction was disbelief. But as the doubts Amy had planted began to take root, his trust in Joanne wavered. He couldn't shake the image of her with someone else, and it gnawed at him until he decided he had to confront her.

The Fallout

When Paxton met Joanne later that evening, his usual warmth was replaced by a guarded tension. They stood in a quiet corner of the park, the chill in the air matching the frostiness between them.

"Is something wrong?" Joanne asked, sensing his unease.

Paxton hesitated, running a hand through his hair. "I need to ask you something, and I want you to be honest."

Joanne raised an eyebrow. "Okay..."

"Were you with someone else?" he blurted out, his voice laced with both anger and hurt. "Tara said she saw you. Amy mentioned..."

Joanne's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you serious right now? You're taking their word over mine?"

"I just need to know the truth," Paxton said, his tone defensive.

Joanne shook her head, her voice trembling with anger. "The truth? The truth is that Amy has been trying to tear us apart from the beginning, and you're letting her win. Do you even see what's happening?"

Paxton opened his mouth to respond, but Joanne cut him off. "No, you don't see it. You never do. You're so caught up in Amy's lies that you can't even tell what's real anymore."

Before Paxton could say another word, Joanne turned and walked away, leaving him standing alone in the cold.

Paxton returned home that night, his thoughts a whirlwind of confusion and guilt. He replayed the conversation with Joanne over and over, his heart sinking as he realized how deeply he'd hurt her.

Amy was waiting for him in the living room, pretending to be absorbed in a book. She looked up when he entered, her expression carefully neutral.

"Hey," she said, her voice light. "How did it go with Joanne?"

Paxton's eyes narrowed as he studied his sister. For the first time, he saw the cracks in her facade—the way her smile didn't quite reach her eyes, the faint edge of smugness in her tone.

"It was awful," he said bluntly. "She's furious with me."

Amy's expression faltered for a moment before she recovered. "Well, maybe she's not the right person for you. Sometimes things happen for a reason, you know?"

Paxton didn't respond immediately. Instead, he sat down across from her, his gaze steady. "Amy, tell me the truth. Did you have anything to do with this?"

Amy's eyes widened in mock indignation. "What? Of course not! Why would I—"

"Stop," Paxton interrupted, his voice firm. "I know you, Amy. I know how far you're willing to go to get what you want. Just tell me the truth."

For a moment, Amy was silent. Then, her facade crumbled. "Fine," she snapped. "Yes, I did it. But it's not like I lied about everything. I just... pushed things in the right direction."

Paxton stared at her, a mixture of anger and disbelief washing over him. "Why? Why would you do that?"

"Because you're my bestfriend!" Amy shouted, her voice breaking. "And ever since Joanne came into your life, I've felt like I'm losing you. She's taking you away from me, Pax. I couldn't just stand by and let that happen."

Paxton shook his head, his voice trembling. "You didn't just hurt Joanne. You hurt me. You made me doubt someone I care about deeply, all because you couldn't handle sharing my attention."

Amy looked away, tears streaming down her face. "I didn't mean to... I just... I didn't know what else to do."

The fallout between the siblings was explosive. Paxton's anger, once held in check, finally boiled over.

"You don't get to control my life, Amy," he said, his voice rising. "You don't get to decide who I care about or who I'm with. What you did was cruel and selfish, and I don't know if I can forgive you for it."

Amy's tears turned to anger. "I was trying to protect you! Joanne isn't good for you. She's—"

"Enough!" Paxton shouted, cutting her off. "This isn't about Joanne. It's about you. You couldn't stand the idea of not being the center of my world, so you decided to ruin the one good thing I had."

Amy flinched at his words, her anger fading into a hollow silence. For the first time, she realized the full extent of what she'd done—and the damage she'd caused.

The days that followed were tense. Amy avoided Paxton, unable to face the weight of her guilt, while Paxton wrestled with his own emotions. He knew he needed to make things right with Joanne, but the path forward wasn't clear.

It was Emily who finally broke the stalemate. She sat down with Paxton one evening, her expression gentle but determined.

"You need to talk to her," she said simply.

Paxton sighed. "I don't even know where to start."

"Start with the truth," Emily said. "Tell her everything. And this time, listen to what she has to say."

When Paxton finally met Joanne again, he wasted no time. He apologized, laying bare everything Amy had done and admitting his own faults.

Joanne listened, her expression unreadable. When he finished, she took a deep breath, her voice calm but firm. "I appreciate your honesty, Paxton. But this isn't just about Amy. It's about trust. And right now, that's something we need to rebuild."

Paxton nodded, determination shining in his eyes. "I'll do whatever it takes, Jo. I don't want to lose you."

As they walked together, side by side, there was a sense of cautious hope. The road ahead wouldn't be easy, but for the first time, it felt like they were on the same path.
