Chapter 4 - Caria's Gift

Beside him, Caria Thornf graced the feast in a gown of pale, shimmering silk, its delicate fabric flowing and draped with ethereal grace, emphasizing her natural beauty. Subtle, iridescent embroidery seemed to catch every whisper of light as she moved. Her hair, a cascade of soft waves, was styled half-up, secured with delicate silver and white gold hairpins adorned with tiny pearls and translucent gemstones that framed her captivating features. A slender silver necklace, holding a single, clear crystal, rested at her throat, complemented by delicate, subtly shimmering drop earrings. Her overall look was one of serene beauty, undeniably captivating yet wonderfully approachable.

Don offered his hand to Caria, and she reciprocated, their joined hands guiding them towards the front of the grand hall where the family table awaited. All eyes were captivated by their sight. Upon reaching the dais, they greeted the Earl and those beside him, then turned to politely acknowledge the assembled guests before taking their seats. Don's siblings warmly welcomed them.

"Now that everyone is here," the Earl announced, "bring in the food and the drinks!"

Immediately, a procession of maids entered the hall, bearing the evening's sumptuous meal and drinks. The grand feast of House Adraels then unfolded as a lavish display of their wealth, power, and discerning taste. Its robust and flavorful menu boasted exotic magical beast meats like Smoked Wyvern Ribs with Obsidian Glaze, Phoenix Feathered Fowl, and Shadehound Loin with Black Flame Spices, alongside traditional Roast Wild Boar. These were complemented by dishes such as Blackened Thornshell Salmon, Desert Bloom Salad, Spiced Grain Pilaf, various Hearth Breads, and Creamed Leeks and Firecap Mushrooms. The feast culminated in decadent desserts like Obsidian Honey Cakes and Flaming Berry Tarts, all washed down with a selection of fine beverages including Adraels' Reserve Red Wine and Black Horned Stout. Presented on carved platters and ornate dishes under the glow of countless candles, it created an atmosphere of formidable power and warm hospitality.

The rich aroma filling the hall was a promise of the feast's exquisite taste. Guests began serving themselves the moment the sumptuous dishes were displayed, their faces lighting up at the savory sight. Happy murmurs filled the air as everyone enjoyed the meal. Earl Dunnel took the opportunity to observe his guests, a wave of satisfaction washing over him as he saw their delight and appreciation.

He then turned his attention to the newly engaged pair. "So, how was it, you two?" he asked.

"Father, I really enjoyed talking with Caria—she's fantastic," Don answered first, a clear happiness in his voice.

The Earl looked at Caria expectantly. "It is my pleasure to have this opportunity, my Lord; I truly enjoyed his company," Caria replied shyly.

"Good! That truly seals the deal then," Earl Dunnel declared, beaming. "I'll personally send a messenger eagle to your father right away to gratefully inform him of this wonderful situation."

As the last of the lavish meal was cleared, the hall hummed with lively conversation and the clinking of glasses. Earl Dunnel, flanked by his two wives, moved among their guests, exchanging pleasantries and radiating warmth. Throughout his realm, the Earl and his family were deeply beloved, known for their just and benevolent rule; he vehemently opposed any oppression of his people by his vassals, ensuring everyone was treated with proper respect. His approachable nature was legendary; one might often find him mingling freely with common folk during festivities, a trait that contributed immensely to the House of Adraels' flourishing prosperity. Visitors from other cities often expressed disbelief at the thriving condition of the citizens within his territory, witnessing firsthand how everyone worked diligently, not out of duress, but from a genuine desire to contribute to the Earldom's success.

Meanwhile, the younger generation present approached the newly engaged pair, offering their sincere congratulations. At a distance, Leinara Veyeb, Don's childhood friend, watched him with longing in her eyes. A subtle ache in her heart held her back from approaching him, even as she longed to offer her well wishes.

Suddenly, Don's gaze met hers. Leinara, startled, quickly looked away. Don then excused himself from Caria and their peers, making his way towards the woman. Caria watched him go, then turned to a lady standing nearby. "Who is that woman?" she inquired, her sociable nature allowing her to speak comfortably with anyone.

"Oh, she's the daughter of the Black Swordsmen Cavalry Commander, Leinara Veyeb," the young lady replied. "I believe she was his childhood friend; they were inseparable when they were younger."

"Oh, I see," Caria responded thoughtfully.

Caria's smile didn't waver as she observed the girl. A soft light—visible only to her—seemed to surround Leinara. It shimmered with hues of warmth and sorrow, a rare combination Caria had learned to recognize as genuine. So... you truly care for him, she thought, not with bitterness, but quiet understanding.

Don reached Leinara Veyeb. "Leinara, what are you doing out here alone?" he asked, concern in his voice.

"Y-Young Lord, I... I was just having some time alone," she stammered, clearly flustered.

"Why?" Don pressed gently.

"Y-Young Lord, I... I just wasn't feeling well today. M-My head is aching," she stuttered again, avoiding his gaze.

"Do you need something? Can I help you?"

"N-No, Young Lord, I... I'm okay. I can manage it," she insisted, her voice barely a whisper.

"Are you sure?" he began, when suddenly Caria appeared beside him.

Caria smiled warmly as her eyes met Leinara's. "Hello, my name is Caria Thornf, may I know who you might be?" she introduced herself politely.

Leinara, startled by Caria's sudden presence, paused. "Greetings, Young Lady," she replied, regaining her composure. "My name is Leinara Veyeb, first daughter of Stagri Veyeb, the commander of the Black Swordsmen Cavalry, one of the Earl's trusted vassals."

"Oh, it was nice meeting you, Leinara," Caria said with a pleasant nod.

Caria then took Leinara's hand, gently leading her towards where the other younger nobles were socializing, with Don following close behind. Her sudden action surprised everyone, even Don's own siblings. Caria, however, had a clear purpose: she was intrigued by Leinara and saw an opportunity to learn more about her. Caria possessed a unique ability to discern a person's true nature by perceiving their aura, instantly knowing if someone was trustworthy. This gift had instantly drawn her to Leinara's bright and genuine presence.
