Drip—
The phone's ringing pulled Ryōgi Shiki back to reality.
[Aozaki Tōko: Shiki, do you need intelligence support? This target might be very dangerous.]
Clearly, Aozaki Tōko had also noticed something different about the incident.
Ryōgi Shiki's expression was serious, and she responded swiftly: "No need. This guy and I are the same kind. The moment we meet, a battle will ensue."
Aozaki Tōko had told her that people in the supernatural world naturally have a mutual attraction. Under such a force, even amidst a crowd, they would notice each other as anomalies.
(TL: SCP!?)
But what Ryōgi Shiki meant by same kind wasn't just that.
She and the person who drew the blood-red M in the video possessed the same type of ability. In the unknown, Ryōgi Shiki had a premonition: "If it has life, I can kill it, even a god."
This declaration likely applied to that person as well.
But she didn't know their specific abilities...
Be careful. Ryōgi Shiki cautioned herself inwardly.
Soon, the taxi's speed slowed until it stopped on the other side of the street.
At the entrance of Araki Financial Company, reporters holding long lenses and short microphones, along with curious onlookers, had already gathered.
The driver let out a sigh of admiration: "It's truly incredible. I've heard about the people in this company; they're all devils who devour people whole. To think they were all killed, it's truly a service to the people!"
"If you ask me, these police officers should just go through the motions. They shouldn't arrest the hero. Such a hero shouldn't be caught."
Ryōgi Shiki silently listened to his words, saying nothing. After paying the fare, she firmly closed the car door.
No matter the crime, if it isn't handled correctly, the flower of good will eventually bear the fruit of evil. Ryōgi Shiki had always upheld this belief when handling requests from Aozaki Tōko.
Stopping evil with killing is by no means the right method.
Only by delivering it to legal judgment can the flower of good bear the fruit of good.
To avoid misunderstanding, Ryōgi Shiki fastened her sheathed short blade to the back of her kimono sash and slowly walked towards the gathered crowd.
"Officer Makima, how is this incident being classified?!"
"Officer Makima, how many victims are there?"
"Is it a group crime, or an internal conflict? As taxpayers, we have the right to know."
"What is the police's explanation for the blood-red M painted on the wall?"
As soon as she approached, she heard the barrage of frantic questions from the reporters.
Ryōgi Shiki looked towards the front of the crowd and saw a woman in a black overcoat with deep golden eyes, standing expressionlessly within the police tape, facing the throng. Her tone was calm, as if speaking to a group of talking corpses: "Based on the information our police currently have, there is only one thing we can announce to the public, and that is—"
"This is a widespread designated incident."
"Other information cannot be disclosed, please understand."
She is Makima,
Ryōgi Shiki nodded thoughtfully. Many of the requests she had handled before had this police officer appearing at the very end. Although she didn't know her exact rank, she was likely the highest authority in the Chiba police force.
She was observing Makima, and Makima was subtly observing her.
Makima smelled a familiar scent, one she often smelled on Yagami Raito a long time ago. She narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing the familiar yet unfamiliar woman before her.
Makima had investigated everyone around Yagami Light.
Naturally, she knew who the woman in front of her was.
She was Ryōgi Shiki. The woman Tsuki-kun was fascinated by in junior high.
Then, Makima turned her head and whispered to Himeno: "Please invite the lady over there, wearing the red jacket and white inner shirt."
"Hmm?" Himeno followed Makima's gaze and saw the cool-tempered Ryōgi Shiki, asking in confusion, "Her? Is something wrong?"
"The case here requires her involvement."
Upon hearing this, Himeno said with some difficulty, "This... isn't quite right, Makim-san. For a widespread designated incident, all information must be kept confidential, except for our internal police personnel."
"There's nothing wrong with it," Makima said calmly. "I am the highest authority in the Chiba region; if anything goes wrong, I will take responsibility."
"Alright."
Then, escorted by grassroots police officers, Makima entered the building. Himeno quietly bypassed the crowd and approached Ryōgi Shiki.
"Is something the matter?" Ryōgi Shiki's expression was calm as she asked.
"Don't be nervous, miss, our Boss wants to see you."
"Boss? You mean... Makima ?"
"Indeed, Makima-san. Please follow me, we'll use the back entrance."
Ryōgi Shiki followed Himeno with some confusion. She was just thinking about how to infiltrate the scene for investigation at night, and she hadn't expected Makima to invite her.
Is the reputation of Kara no Kyōkai already this widespread?
Or is it Aozaki Tōko?
Ryōgi Shiki shook her head, finding these police officers rather peculiar.
Although she wasn't a police officer and didn't understand the specific internal rules of the police, in a country like Tōyō which places great importance on hierarchy, such casual addressing as "Boss" and "Miss" felt somewhat strange, as if they were a group of special police operating outside the rules, rather than traditional detectives within the system.
And Makima although she couldn't sense that the other party was from the supernatural world, she felt an inexplicable sense of danger. Her intuition told her that the woman named Makima was dangerous.
But Ryōgi Shiki didn't worry. She calmly followed Himeno through the small door and into the building.
Even if these police officers were so-called "black police" and intended to harm her, with the short blade in her hand and her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception... Ryōgi Shiki didn't believe she would be in any danger.
As soon as she entered, she smelled a strong scent of blood, and saw the charred corpse lying in front of the elevator.
"This is... self-immolation?"
"Although the forensic report hasn't come out yet, it seems to be the case."
A gentle, honeyed female voice sounded beside her. Makima walked towards Ryōgi Shiki, her hands clasped behind her back.
"Nice to meet you, I am Makima, the section chief of the Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 4." Makima walked up to Ryōgi Shiki with a smiling face, her voice gentle and sweet, unconsciously making people drop their guard.
Ryōgi Shiki was momentarily stunned: "Hello, I..."
Unexpectedly, Makima raised her index finger and placed it on Ryōgi Shiki's lips: "Think carefully before you speak."
"In what capacity will you face me?"
"Miss, as a staff member of Kara no Kyōkai."
"Or... Tsuki-kun's friend?"
"Ryōgi Shiki~"
Ryōgi Shiki's pupils contracted. The fear of having her identity exposed and a flood of information hit her brain at once.
The air seemed to fall silent, filled only by the vital sound of her own heartbeat.
Makima is the head of Public Safety Devil Extermination Special Division 4?
She knows me.
She knows Yagami.
What's her relationship with Yagami?
