Chapter 43 - The Blood Pact

The acrid smell of smoke clawed at Maya's lungs as she scrambled to her feet, Liam's steady grip anchoring her trembling body. Flames flickered wildly, casting monstrous shadows on the cracked wooden planks of the pier. The distant roar of sirens was swallowed by the chaos — a warning too late.

Kai's silhouette darted between the pillars, muscles coiled with desperate precision. His eyes burned with fierce resolve, every breath a silent vow to protect.

"Move!" he barked, voice slicing through the din.

Maya's heart hammered — the pregnancy scan still vivid in her mind, a secret she barely dared to acknowledge aloud. The knowledge pulsed like a second heartbeat beneath her ribs, fragile yet fierce.

Liam pulled her toward a narrow passage beneath the pier, the flames licking greedily at the edges of their escape route. The heat was unbearable, sweat stinging her eyes as they ducked beneath the collapsing beams.

Behind them, the masked attackers advanced, their footsteps thundering — relentless, merciless.

"Why is she the key?" Maya whispered breathlessly, eyes locked on Kai.

He didn't answer — instead, he threw a glance over his shoulder, jaw clenched.

The night air was thick with tension and the metallic scent of fear.

Suddenly, Kai halted, pressing a gloved finger to his lips. "Silent," he ordered.

They froze, shadows swallowed in darkness.

A soft, guttural hum vibrated from the depths of the pier — mechanical and ominous.

Liam squinted, peering into the gloom. "What is that?"

From the blackness emerged a towering machine, its sleek metal limbs creaking and whirring, red sensors scanning the area like hungry eyes. The attackers froze, weapons lowered — not out of fear, but respect.

Kai's voice dropped to a grim whisper. "They brought the sentinel."

Maya's breath caught. The sentinel was a legend — a weapon designed to hunt, unrelenting and unstoppable.

The machine's glowing core pulsed rhythmically, like a beating heart fueled by cold malice.

Without warning, it raised a colossal arm, releasing a burst of searing light.

Liam shoved Maya behind a rusted crate just in time as the blast seared past them, igniting the air with sizzling heat.

"Run!" Kai shouted, sprinting toward the shadowy exit.

Maya's legs burned as she pushed herself forward, the gravity of her secret anchoring her to the fight. This wasn't just about survival anymore — it was about the future she carried inside her.

As they burst into the cold night air, a sudden roar tore through the sky — a helicopter, its spotlight slicing through the fog like a silver blade.

The attackers scattered into the darkness.

Kai dragged Maya and Liam toward a waiting black SUV, doors flung open.

As Maya climbed in, her eyes locked on Kai's — fierce, determined, and haunted.

"This is just the beginning," he murmured. "They want what's inside you. More than life — they want power."

Liam's hand tightened around hers. "Then we fight. No matter the cost."

Maya swallowed her fear, nodding.

Outside, the city lights flickered, oblivious to the storm raging in the shadows.

But inside her, something stronger than fear blossomed — a fire forged from love, desperation, and the fierce will to protect.

Her countdown had started again.

But this time, she wasn't alone.
