Chapter 33 - Bare Roads, Tangled Hearts

The road home stretched out beneath the midnight sky like a silver ribbon lit by moonlight. The windows of Liam's sleek black car fogged faintly from the heat inside, though the night outside was brisk. Maya sat curled on his lap, her arms wrapped loosely around his neck, the hem of his shirt clinging to her like a second skin.

Neither of them had bothered to redress—caught somewhere between the rush of escape and the ecstasy of being entirely themselves. Her bare legs stretched across the leather seat, her body still humming from their earlier games. Liam's jacket was thrown carelessly behind them, and Maya's hair fell like a cascade of ink across her back, swaying every time he took a turn on the road.

"You know," Liam murmured with a half-smile, his eyes darting between the road and her flushed face, "if the police stop us like this, we're going to make the evening news."

Maya chuckled, her voice breathy from the lingering high. "Then you better keep your hands on the wheel, officer." She brushed her lips lightly against his ear, her breath warm and teasing. "Unless you want me to do something reckless... again."

Liam let out a low growl of amusement, the sound vibrating through her where their bodies met. "You already did. I'm not sure I've recovered."

She kissed his jaw, slow and soft, leaving a trail of warmth behind. "Then let me make it worse."

Their laughter was a melody dancing in the silence of the road, laced with mischief and something deeper—an intimacy that had slowly been growing roots. The tension between them hadn't faded; it simmered beneath every shared glance, every stolen touch.

The city lights began to bloom on the horizon like golden fireflies, signaling the edge of home.

"Liam?" Maya asked, her voice quieter now, thoughtful.

"Yeah?"

"Does it ever scare you? How fast this is happening… how real it feels?"

Liam glanced at her, his fingers brushing her cheek. "Every second," he said truthfully. "But I've never wanted anything more real than this."

She rested her head against his shoulder, eyes fluttering shut for a moment as the hum of the car lulled her. Safe. That's how he made her feel, even in their madness.

Soon, they pulled into the driveway of their new place—a sleek modern home tucked just far enough from the city's chaos. The porch light flickered on as the car came to a halt.

Liam reached behind her, grabbing a hoodie and slipping it over her shoulders with a gentle kiss to her collarbone. "Come on, wildcat. Let's finish what we started… under a real roof this time."

Maya smiled, heart pounding, her fingers curling around his. "Lead the way, Mr. Dangerously Charming."

They stepped into the warmth of their home—bare feet on cold tiles, hearts still blazing—and behind them, the door clicked shut with a finality that felt like the start of something new.
