Chapter 81 - Chapter 80: Return to Spain

Matters of funding and talent are mostly settled, and Carlo's diplomatic visit to Italy has also come to an end.

Escorted by his brother Crown Prince Umberto and the Italy Prime Minister Giovanni, Carlo boarded the cruise ship returning to Spain, and also took away a 10 million lira interest-free loan and hundreds of talents.

Only a few scientists among them were arranged on the same ship, while the other scientists would take different ships to Spain at staggered times.

On the ship, Carlo also met one of the talents he focused on, the future Nobel laureate, Camillo Golgi.

Regardless of how outstanding Camillo Golgi's achievements in the medical field would be later, he was currently just a 27-year-old doctor who had graduated from university only a few years prior.

Upon meeting Carlo, Camillo Golgi appeared very reserved, not even daring to make direct eye contact with Carlo.

"Don't be nervous, Mr. Golgi," Carlo said with a smile. "Did you graduate from the University of Pavia Medical School?"

"Yes, Your Majesty. After graduation, I worked at San Matteo Hospital and dedicated myself to the study of nervous system diseases," Camillo Golgi nodded and replied very respectfully.

"Excellent, Mr. Golgi," Carlo smiled. There aren't many medical professionals in Spain who specialize in nervous system research; this time, it feels like striking gold.

"Spain also has corresponding medical schools; if you don't mind, you can first serve as a visiting professor at these medical schools." Carlo thought for a moment and started arranging Golgi's work:

Once the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences is established, you can also apply to join the Royal Academy of Sciences to conduct medical research.

Any researcher who joins the Royal Academy of Sciences can apply for project research funding from the Academy to support their research.

I will have someone arrange your accommodation, preferably somewhere close to your workplace. Mr. Golgi, welcome to Spain."

"Thank you, Your Majesty. It is my honor to come to Spain, I will dedicate myself wholeheartedly to research, to thank Your Majesty for your trust." Camillo Golgi quickly nodded, expressing his gratitude to Carlo.

Although Camillo Golgi had shown extraordinary talent during his time at medical school, Italy did not place such high importance on medical talent.

For Camillo Golgi to become a professor at his alma mater, the University of Pavia, he would need to achieve certain breakthroughs in his research projects and gain a certain level of recognition.

However, Carlo immediately offered him a position as a professor at a Spanish medical school and even allowed him to apply to a prestigious research organization like the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences, which clearly demonstrated his trust in him.

"Of course, Mr. Golgi. If you have any close friends from the University of Pavia, you can also invite them to Spain.

I am quite welcoming of talents like yours who are engaged in medical research, and they can also enjoy similar treatment to yours.

Please rest assured, as long as you have sufficient ability, I will provide sufficient research funding for your medical research and will not interfere too much with your research.

The progress of medicine is beneficial to the entire world, and I hope we can jointly promote the advancement of human medicine, so that people all over the world can enjoy more advanced medical standards, to treat previously incurable diseases." The University of Pavia is quite famous in Italy, and friends known to Camillo Golgi would at least not be ordinary people with mediocre abilities.

Even if they are just competent medical professionals, bringing them to Spain is definitely not a loss. After all, there aren't that many good doctors in this era, and even the doctor training system is not well-established.

"I can give it a try, Your Majesty," Camillo Golgi nodded, but fearing that failing to attract people might incur Carlo's displeasure, he quickly added, "However, I am not sure if anyone would be willing to travel thousands of miles to Spain, I will try my best."

Carlo smiled. The relationships between these researchers are not that complicated; perhaps Camillo Golgi might actually be able to invite people over.

After all, the conditions offered by Carlo are quite top-notch in all entire Europe; the attractiveness might not be that great for top scientists, but it is still very appealing to ordinary scientists.

The fleet's docking location was in Valencia, and they could return to the capital, Madrid, by train.

As for why Catalonia's Barcelona wasn't chosen, it can only be said that the separatists here are not peaceful, and for his own safety, Carlo preferred to choose Valencia as the docking point.

After enduring the long train journey's bumps, Carlo finally returned to the capital, Madrid.

Although this era already had relatively developed railways and trains, the speed of trains was truly pathetic.

The mainstream train speed currently remains between 20 and 30 kilometers per hour, and only on exceptionally flat, straight railways could a speed of around 30 kilometers per hour be maintained.

Even though the carriage Carlo was traveling in had been specially modified, it not only had comfortable and luxurious large sofas, but also a kitchen and bedroom, including areas like a meeting room and an office.

But at such a speed, it still took over ten hours to travel from Valencia to Madrid, let alone longer distances.

Currently, Spain's railways basically connect several major cities and key areas, and if one were to travel around these cities, it would take at least several days.

This is also why Carlo was always reluctant to travel. Whether on land or at sea, a journey of several hundred kilometers took too long, which was truly inconvenient.

Carlo was also looking forward to the birth of automobiles and airplanes. Only after these two technologies achieve true commercial popularization would transportation methods be considered completely reformed, and traveling would be both comfortable and convenient.

This visit to Italy only took a little over half a month, and Madrid had not undergone many changes.

Along the way from Valencia to Madrid, one could see many factories in the suburbs of Madrid constantly expanding, and there were also large stretches of farmland between cities shimmering with golden light, indicating that this year was a year of double harvest for Industry and agriculture.

Carlo was still in a rather wonderful mood. Spain's development was quite smooth. Although it wouldn't immediately boost overall national strength significantly, this kind of steady progress was equally pleasing.

Along the way, one could also see the Spanish people displaying smiles; they were genuinely enjoying their current lives. After the reduction of various heavy taxes, a large number of Spanish farmers could finally catch their breath.

Although they were not yet living a good life, it was still somewhat better compared to before. At least most of the Spanish farmers' grain could remain in their own hands, whether it was sold for income or kept as food, it allowed people to feel at ease.
