Third POV:
It was evening time when the bell over the door gave a dull jingle as Cordeillius Thorne known to most as Cordell stepped into the familiar thrift and pawn shop on the corner of Leland and 7th. The smell was exactly the same as he remembered— old leather, polished wood, and a faint trace or cigar smoke that always seemed to cling to the place no matter how many air fresheners the owner tried. Calvin's Corner Thrift & Pawn a place that Cordell was a frequent visitor to at times in the past 9 months since he moved to New York last August.
Cordell walked straight up to the counter, his jaw tight, fingers wrapped around a small velvet box in his pocket. He'd imagined this moment playing out very different. In his mind, he had been dressed sharp, holding Angela's hand, maybe even finally getting a proper kiss for once after she opened it He spent 7 months saving for the necklace—$7,300, scraping together with overnight shifts and investing in stock before he sold it. For the past few months he was making smart investments to do better in life sometimes even going hungry just to get the necklace and better himself for her. Angela had been eyeing it for months. Now it was her birthday and he was selling it. Cordell saw no point keeping it.
Today he sold his stock he been investing in for the last few months in way of making a foundation for a better life planning to get a good outfit for today and even take her to a decently nice restaurant but he found her cheating when he was doing the last delivery last night so there was no point to keep the necklace or tell her about his success in the stop market.
Cordell set the necklace down it was 14 karat white gold, inlaid with sapphire and diamond. Calvin looks recognizing the item instantly the necklace Cordell been saving for for months. Looking to Cordell and says with straight face.
Calvin:*says* Man she a beautiful. I give you the full $7,300 for it.
Cordell:*says in shocked southern hispanic accent* You sure?
Calvin:*says* Yeah I sure, your a good kid. Besides I know at least three people who'll fight for this beauty."
With that Calvin count up some money doing a mix of crips bills from hundreds along with other smaller bills the smallest bills being a few fives. After getting the money he puts the money into his worn out wallet planning to visit the ATM and also go shopping getting a haircut. However, before Cordell choose to leave his eyes caught sight of an old friend his old black Willow Creek guitar and case was still there seeing the guitar that he had sold back a few months ago to when money was tight and when his stock was low. Back then he was desperate and semi-low on money needing some for rent so he made the choice to sell the guitar. It was still there still just as he remembered and he wanted her back.
Cordell:*nods to the guitar and southern hispanic accent with some hope* How much for my old friend back?
Calvin:*sees what he looking at smiles pulls the guitar down with the case sets it on the counter ringing it up says* $150 and it's yours again. Far as I am concerned it was always yours I was holding out on selling her for a while in case you're come back for her.
Cordell smiled happily paying for his guitar putting it in it's case then sling it over his shoulders like a backpack. After shouldering his guitar case he waves bye to Calvin then turns to the door about to leave but pauses when the door opens again and an elderly woman stepped inside. The woman looked like she stepped out of a forgotten black-and-white movie—refined, classy, and elegant. She wears a navy blue dress, peals, with a nice coat. She comes in carrying two large garment bags. She sets then on the counter and politely speaks to Calvin.
Woman:*says politely* I came here to donate these.
Calvin opens the top garment suit bag and Cordell caught a glimpse of the fabric it was a well design and felt oddly drawn to it besides it if fit he could use a good suit for interviews and the suits the woman brought in may be old and use but they looked brand knew.
Cordell:*polite southern hispanic accent* Excuse me ma'am but I must say that suit is amazing. *Holds out hand for Calvin to hand the coat over when he does Cordell holds it while he looks at the tag and says shock says* This is a Devore?
Woman:*smiles a small proud smile* Yes it was my late husbands William *Cordell removes his guitar case from his shoulder and his jacket putting it on it was a perfect fit actually* He won it off Sy with a backward draw and also with a full house. Sy may have known about clothes but poker was so not his game.
Cordell:*looks at her with shock moves the hair from my face and put it into a tight ponytail showing my face and southern hispanic accent* Your husband played poker with Sy Devore.
Woman:*smiles and nods nostalgic* Yes he played with Sy and all the Rat Pack. I even joined in a few games. *Cordell removes the suit jacket then puts on the blue one and the fedora when he does the woman notices how Cordell looks like a late old friend shockingly whispers* You know you actually looked like one of the lesser known members of the Rat Pack, Hernando Gomez.
Cordell:*looks at her shocked southern hispanic accent* Wait you knew my great-great-grandfather and he was actually a member of the Rat Pack.
Woman:*shocked whispers* Your Hernando grandson the family resemblance is uncanny *stops to think and after a few seconds* You know I was going to donate these but I know William would want them to go with someone that appreciate them and actually take care of them. Besides they looked practically built for you. Not to mention I know William would be happy to have Hernando's descendant have these. *Cordell was shocked he didn't know what to say and the woman continue* You know I have a closet full of pieces just like these if you like, I could show you I even have got many stories if you don't mind listening to the rambles of an old woman that is.
Cordell:*says with awe completely laced within his southern hispanic accent* To be allowed to own clothes of such legends and to hear stories about what they were really like behind clothes doors is a great honor very few could only dream of ma'am.
With that Cordell had removed the hat and suit putting it back into the garment bags. He then puts his old military jacket on and shoulder his guitar case shouldering it. He then grabs the two bags waving goodbye to Calvin before leaving the pawn shop with the elderly woman who he found out name was Rosemarie Evanston. Cordell followed Rosemarie to her place which was a couple blocks away and to his shock it was actually the house from White Collar show that Neal Caffrey used. Cordell went in and was lead to the guest room from the show which he was told his late great geat grandfather had stayed in back in old days.
He looked over the clothes he saw many amazing clothes that were even better then the ones trust fund kids wear. After seeing the clothes and Cordell had dinner with Rosemarie who told him stories of the past while Cordell tell abit about his own life as well. After a few hours it was 7pm and Cordell had to leave but Rosemarie had offered the guest room for him to stay. Cordell wanted to reject but she convinced him saying about how it be doing her a favour since it been lonely in her house and it be nice to have someone around especially someone who likes hearing her ramble about the old days. So they agreed for him to move in next weekend.
After that Cordell left the suits behind and told Rosemarie bye making sure to exchanged numbers. After that he left the house going to an ATM to put his money in so he was not walking with large amount of money. After depositing the money he got some money out again for shopping. After his stop at the ATM Cordell heads off to do some shopping with more manageable bills.
After getting his money handled Cordell started shopping for essentials and splurged on none essentials choosing to actually buy something for himself. Cordell bought new plain clothes, new shoes, new sturdy school backpack, socks that didn't have holes, nothing fancy just his size and actually new. After that he went military surplus store, he picked up a new weatherproof military jacket, a heavy duty top-heavy military duffle, and a military tactical heavy duty back pack all in black. After purchasing his military stuff he packed his new clothes, school backpack, and military backpack into his his new military duffle bag. After shopping he gets into a cab riding it back to campus.
Riding in the back of the cap his duffle and guitar case laying in the back seat next to him looking out the window watching the city skyline pass bye. He had went to Calvin's Thrift & Pawn shop to bury a heartbreak. He left it having found a thread connected to a legacy he didn't know much about growing up and the thread was only just starting to unravel. However, when Cordell gets back to his shared apartment he heads straight to his bedroom setting his stuff down then stripped down to boxers then climbed into his bed covering up going to sleep not knowing that tomorrow more changes will come to happen.
